This was an older piece when Carlin was more optimistic and hopeful, and religious, about religion. Later on of course he turned so bitter and vitriolic as he gave up on life, especially after his wife died. "It's a good notion, it's probably a right notion... God is a cool guy!" Imagine that coming through in his later years!

I was born in the US, brought up Catholic (Catholic is the dominate religion in the US)

What if I was born in a Jewish country...don't you think I would have been brought up Jewish, not Christian?

@mahones64 Just a little fact check for ya here. While "Christians" comprise 75% of U.S. population, Catholics comprise only 25%. Protestants comprise 50% of U.S. pop,, half of which are evangelical. Catholics comprise 50% of world Christians, so it's still just 17% of the world population.

Baptists are 2nd place with about 16% Next appears to be nondenominational/no-denominat­ion-supplied at 10%. Then 25 or so denominations have a share of the rest -- None more than 3%. So indeed Catholics are the dominant religion. Sorry for the error!

I think that comes down to Michaelangelo's famous painting on the roof of the Sistine Chapel.

He needed to depict God as something, he could not just leave it as a blank space, as everyone would be distracted by the blank space and not look at the overall work. For example, why is God a man in the painting? Why is he white? The beard, is there to symbolise wisdom, artistically, I know, but why not just depict God as a cloud? Again, the cloud would be as distracting as a blank spot.

Oh yeah, totally. I am theist, and I dislike religion. I just feel it blinds people. I have no problem with atheists, agnostics etc, but I do have a problem with militant religious figures, militant atheists and militant agnostics. People who claim to know the entire truth, or, like Dawkins or Phelps, claimto have the only answer, and one set of rules, and if you don't follow these rules, you are wrong.

I like to ask questions all the time, in and outside of religion, to remain open minded.

i agree with you man, im an agnostic atheist but i try to respect the religion's of others&i try to keep an open mind.i dont know the answers a&when it comes down to it i dont think anyone that is alive does at this point in time either.

i do think that science (i.e. scientific method)&logic are foundational to discovery, since they are the most consistent and trustworthy sources for exploration and learning that we have

Notice you selected Dawkins, and not Phelps, who I claimed to dislike also? No the reason I dislike Dawkins is that he is not a good writer, He is biased, and pushes an agenda. But when he is challenged, or meets oppossition, he backs down. He did an interview, promoting his book, and he very quickly backed down, after appearing so staunch.

I also watched his documentary, with the same title as his book, and he distinctly sought out religious nut cases, rather than present a dual argument for both sides. His evidence is selective, also. He could easily find people who respect his beliefs and his moral beliefs, but he does not.
