Okay I'll say this: People hate on Ruffin cuz he had an ego the size of Texas, but ya know he could back it up for one and no one hates on his voice or talent or showmanship. He has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. That's just me though. I often wonder what direction the music of the Temps would've taken had he stayed with the group and never messed up. I still prefer the C5 classics to the psychadelic/funk era stuff that gave them grammys and whatnot. I'm a Ruffin fan man. Nuff said :)
SOoooooooooo hard to choose between him and Otis Redding. I'm more of a David Ruffin fan, miles and away, but the only guy who could do the things to a song that David does is Ottis Redding, Michael Jackson, and Mike Patton. David is my all time fav though.
From the album" Temptations With A Lot Of Soul, "Two Sides To Love"was my favorite...Man,was Jamerson cool or what ??? Wish that I could have been a fly on the wall lol. ;-). Peace !! StonieDogStl.
Having visited Hitsville a few months ago-- this clip just resonates with the talent that was there-- and the best voice of Motown- Mr Ruffin.... such a shame between his demons and likely some jealousy after he left the Tempts- his career was cut shorter than it should have been as a star
Is that really how they recorded? I mean singing live with the musicians like that? Or was it just set up for the camera. Ruffin is totally incredible here.
@jasonpfinch There was definitely a lot of "live" and one-room recording then. It still gives you a better feel, in my opinion, vs. recording the drum track first with scratch guitar, bass, vox, etc. This type of recording is part of the reason a lot of the rhythm section can sound a bit "smashed" and blurry .... you've got single mics on large parts of the group vs. individual mics on each instrument or each drum.
man this was great. first time i've ever seen them in the studio actually recorded. this film look so fresh like it was recorded this year. this was when music was great and the artist was really singing. thanks for posting this.
Smokey did not produce this song and therefore not in the video...Norman Whitfield actually took over the producing duties from Smokey during the late 60's. The gentleman is definitely not Berry Gordy. He's Brian Holland of the songwriting and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Wasn't feeling this song at first but it grew on me. I like it better with every listen. I think it's because of David. His voice is so wonderful, and it's a real treat to see him at work.
I've played guitar since '67 FYI. I do practice a ton and I pick up lots of things from all this great stuff on Youtube. Sorry to say that I have gotten no insights from your comments, And populating your posts with "F-bombs" is about as boring as it gets, Captain Vocabulary.
Who is the guy telling the musicians to take it to Letter C...Now it appears he knows music...anybody know his name..also the fella with the dark glasses on swinging his arms ..I would just like to match names with the writers and song producers and vocal coaches..
Back in that time dressin' to impress was just as important as when you hit the stage. 'Not only were the Tempts known for thier percision on stage, but the way they dressed off stage was just as sharp !
No doubt, I agree with you! Times were different though. Even now that I'm a lil older I feel like I dress to impress! The tempts were always on point with the wardrobe, they were very fashion-coordinated and a chemistry that was unmatched by any other group. That's why we all love them. Long live the Temptations!
this supposedly isn't a real session but is a set up to show how a real session goes...yeah but truth is a lot of producers would say stupis shit like put a little more feeling in it...cuz them shits weren't musicians and weren't trained so they didn't know how to say play a dominat 7th chord instead of a major 7th..they would say stupid shit that didn't mean anything to a musican and the musician would still have to figure out what to play according to his own musical understanding
4real...me too...'specially since he didn't have shit to say of any substance..."the guitar I wish y'all could give a little better feel on that guitar part there"...what the fuck does THAT mean?...typical non-musician speak..."and the piano give a little more emphesis on that bass part there".Huh?...you already got a bass player there who can play a LITTLE BIT...guy named Jamerson...remember him? let HIM put the emphesis on the bass part...while you stay your ass in the CONTROL ROOM...jeez
If you check the article link on the right, it says this wasnt a real session. They just did this for the a news crew camera. And you really need to shut the fuc# up trying to talk sh!t about Eddie Holland though lol
@sonwamac ANYBODY who know ANYTHING about Motown certainly knows the absolute musical genius of Holland/Dozier/Holland. Period. If his comments strike you as "typical non-musician" you might consider this was a "staged" recording session for the cameras and PERHAPS not accurate!!
Check the cute chick playin' congas...probably an apiring singer who tok an opportunity to do ANYTHING just to get in on a session...or maybe she's actually a percussionist as her main axe....that's Motown for ya...everything unorthodox but mainstream at the same time
they had no idea how they (motown) were changing the entire landscape of music back then. wow what an impact they had! berry, smokey, HDH, funk brothers, cholly atkins, stevie, marvin and the rest of the family, they all played a great part in what would become the greatest music empire of all time! thanks for posting. God bless!
You can tell that this is when the Temps truly stuck together. Yes, younger and healthy. But that is what life dose and will do to you and the rest of as. In the1987 concert David and Eddie where still very good looking men. The drugs and cig's that effected their live was a personal thing. Which we all have. Love them both and wish they where still here.
