  • Grande Giovanni...

  • I've never thought if the French Horn as a jazz instrument. You've opened my eyes. Thank you.

  • you are realy good!!! :)

  • I like your music and your sound very much.

    Greetings from Japan!

  • @ melomaniacmdj

Duuuude, I'm a horn player who switched from trumpet and I've gotten complements by a professional on my ability to switch from dark to light tone. Who says a trumpet can't play horn well?

I'm only a sophomore in high school too.

French horn is my passion. I love it. <3

  • @ChelseaTheBandGeek

Hah, i did the exact opposite. i'm our schools first horn, and i picked up jazz horn/trumpet so i could be in jazz band. and yeah, i've knowticed that if you swap from trumpet to horn either your going to be really good, or really bad. there is generaly no in-between lol.

  • Sigue adelante que hace mucha falta que la trompa entre mas de lleno en el mundo del jazz. Animo¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • Increible, me encanta!!! Sigue adelante que está genial!!! Por cierto me podrías decir que boquilla utilizas? La trompa es una Yamaha, no?

Yo utilizo una Holton, pero me resulta algo dura para tocar, que me recomiendas?

  • It's really beautiful, but that's not a sound of french horn...:) I think so. And that's no good, to loose sound :)

  • OMG! is that a coloured mouth piece! i always wanted those! but my parents wont let me and nice french horn jazz!

  • sounds a lot like a trombone in jazz

  • Psssh, who says French horns can't play jazz? This is great!

  • They can't, the people playing them can.... sometimes.

  • What size mouthpiece is that?? it looks almost like a trumpet one...

  • From the looks of it, it looks like he is using some sort of custom mouthpiece with a much deeper cup. This is probably what helps him get that ridiculously dark tone that he has.

  • By the way... AWESOME, MOLTO BENE!!!! I loved it!!

  • bloody amazing especially to play jazz on a horn and so controlled as well.

  • well,It's very nice~!

  • Keep dreaming kid, you have to really dedicate yourself to get this good and get a scholarship, and for full rides you need to be perfect in all ways, also stay academically strong because with an academic education even in music you can't go far, realistically speaking of course.

  • Dude! thats why i said im gonna get really good.geez.I already know everything u just said really, and who says keep dreamin...what a wonderful person u are.

  • Perhaps you should've read his comment. He said, "You have to really dedicate yourself to get this good and get a scholarship."

You can't just say "I'm going to get good."

If you play the horn to get a scholarship then chances are it won't work out. You should play the horn because you love the instrument, you love the sound, the music. Any other reason and it's likely you won't get far with it.

  • And you shouldn't judge the instruments difficulty if you're only in seventh grade, unless the school systems have changed drastically since I was younger and you guys play at a professional level... and I know it hasn't. The things that make the horn more difficult then other instruments don't become as apperent until you get into more difficult music.

  • "money instrument"... ugh... what an awful comment...

I remember from the Danilo Perez Foundation guidelines, one of them is:

"If your main motivation is money, then get another career... music should be your real motivation"

  • sto studiando su questo pezzo poi mi darai gli spartiti ahahahahahah

    giovanni awesome.............................

  • How 'bout trombone. I'm a trombone player and I play a bit of Horn too.... I hope I don't sound all that horrible. lol

  • Trombone to horn crossovers usually aren't as awful to listen to as trumpt to horn. haha, but they tend to be a little "blatty"

  • well, actually, I crossed over from trumpet to horn and my tone is pretty nice. It's probably because my tone was a little to dark when I played trumpet.

  • lol serious skillz french horn is REALLY hard

  • i'm really experienced with it, so i guess thats why i may not seem quite as impressed as you.

I played at the Majestic theatre when i was 16, with my private instructor and 14 other horns.

It was an amazing experience, we ALL had a solo, to show off :)

  • haha..i had a solo . i was playing the star spangled banner in our airport

  • What mouthpiece is he using its very long and wide?

  • F6? thats what i play with...try it out

  • Where are the 2 clarinets?

    Need some double leads...

  • Is this originally for the French Horn? Never see the horn in jazz, pretty cool. I've always wanted to play jazz.

  • i bet hes a trumpet player

  • No freakin way a trumpet player could pull off such a dark rich tone. Trumpet kills horn chops, and horn kills trumpet chops.

  • i totally agree with you mukwic. i'm a horn player and i can't stand when trumpet players try to play horn. it's so bright and nearly almost always SHARP. it drives me crazy.

p.s. i want to be like him ;)

  • can someone tell me where i can download this guys music

  • the only frenchhorn jazz person i know who plays damn well i admire him

  • Wow. Is this guy improving after the initial theme? Like, at 2:30? holy crap. Where can I find this man?

  • cool.......... i like it........i really want a french horn but that the oboe and bassoon is al i seem to not have............. and drums

  • Giovanni plays the horn so great that his artistry is one of my greatest finds via any media. I played horns and reeds and dreamed of playing a French horn. Playing these YouTube video's of Giovanni's is an important part of day, I watch all his motions while playing and I watch for the cool ways he takes leave of his horn at the song end. I would love to have transcriptions of all his recorded solos. Too much. One of my biggest finds on the internet is Giovanni Hoffer.

    Eric

  • would it be illegal or something if i played this in front of an audience? (i would say who it was composed by of course)

  • It would be OK as long as it was a free showing.

  • Wonderful groove going here! Understated, but any horn player around can appreciate the virtuosity going on here. I'm a horn player with a full college degree and I must say that getting off the ground at all playing jazz on horn is an amazing feat. This guy is way cool!

  • he makes it look so easy to go so high with out strugling

  • very well done. Not many ppl could have pulled something like that off (including me)

  • Es un chingón el artista del corno francés, felicidades, excelente afinación la que nos muestra al tocar su instrumento, en hora buena.

  • awesome dude!!! u rock keep it up.

  • lol...i´m playing the french horn myself and it doesn´t sound like a saxophone anyway!!!

oh man... this is a great song...man... just awesome ;)

  • muting it so it sounds almost like a sax. weird

  • i need this song... I NEED IT!!!!

  • what song is it? i want it!

  • =O

    awesome..

  • this is sweet. i like that little altered thing u did about 3 1/2 minutes in

  • hahahahahaha. my life is complete.

  • I didnt even think jazz could be played on fench horn. I'm never gonna look at my french horn the same again. lol.

  • i know !!!! i love the sound of the horn in this video..its like jazzy sounding

  • Jazz on the horn is so difficult, even the great late Denis Brain had very little success in this genre. Excellent example of what can be done. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  • wow that was rly good (super clear!) dont think he cracked a note, and mature tone =P

  • sweet... now i'm motivated to practice!

  • That was Sick man!

  • Horn is so hard to play, it's really amazing he can do that, that's a buttload of breath control.

  • that waz great!! i dont think i'll ever get that good... but i will try!! ^-^

  • i'm sure you can. put your mind to it, no doubt, you can do it

  • thank you for the encouragement!! ^___________^

  • mhm. good luck!

  • Hofferquattro is genius! this is sooo cool! thanks for sharing with us.

  • i didn't know horns could play jazz

  • Of course horn can play jazz, why would horn be excluded?

  • in our school band they are

  • They're probably not excluded in you band... It's just difficult to find jazz music with horn parts. Rare, that's all.

  • i wish we got to play i love jazz but idk we r not allowed in tryouts even

  • i play horn, and started to play trumpet just so i could play jazz, the horn is just not a really jazzy instrument most of the time, but when it is played well the horn is good for anything lol

  • yup French horn is the best... well almost

  • Definitely!

  • it's just that you don't see horns in jazz bands, i mean it's usually only trumpet, trompone, all the saxes, a rhythm section, keyboard, and some guitars and basses. I play the horn and i have nothing against it to play in a jazz band, although i prefer the french horn sound in an orchestra or concert band (i usually play trompone parts that suck, cause when i transpose the notes end up being in the lower register, which some hornists aren't good at)

  • @jjmm47 i know the feeling. just started playing horn/trumpet in jazz band this year. i prefer to play the fourth trumpet part on horn if the first trombone is low....or i'll just pop the bone part up. sounds good with a lot of chord structures.

  • Instruments don't play jazz... People do.

  • hihihi - you're so right ...... although we tend to forget it sometimes.

  • hahah so true hahaha

  • wow... this guy is a real TALENT!!! Congratulation... VERY NICE SOUND!!!

  • Sweet

  • excelente!!

  • wow that is really good

  • wow

  • this guy seriously inspired me to play on with my french horn not saying i'am quiting but his like inspiring me more even when i'am already inspired lol
