Duuuude, I'm a horn player who switched from trumpet and I've gotten complements by a professional on my ability to switch from dark to light tone. Who says a trumpet can't play horn well?
Hah, i did the exact opposite. i'm our schools first horn, and i picked up jazz horn/trumpet so i could be in jazz band. and yeah, i've knowticed that if you swap from trumpet to horn either your going to be really good, or really bad. there is generaly no in-between lol.
From the looks of it, it looks like he is using some sort of custom mouthpiece with a much deeper cup. This is probably what helps him get that ridiculously dark tone that he has.
I play the french horn and im in seventh grade band...and realy people its not that hard(just the high notes). But im gonna get really good because my french horn is a money instrument(meaning you can get a good scholarship if youre goo).
Keep dreaming kid, you have to really dedicate yourself to get this good and get a scholarship, and for full rides you need to be perfect in all ways, also stay academically strong because with an academic education even in music you can't go far, realistically speaking of course.
Dude! thats why i said im gonna get really good.geez.I already know everything u just said really, and who says keep dreamin...what a wonderful person u are.
Perhaps you should've read his comment. He said, "You have to really dedicate yourself to get this good and get a scholarship."
You can't just say "I'm going to get good."
If you play the horn to get a scholarship then chances are it won't work out. You should play the horn because you love the instrument, you love the sound, the music. Any other reason and it's likely you won't get far with it.
And you shouldn't judge the instruments difficulty if you're only in seventh grade, unless the school systems have changed drastically since I was younger and you guys play at a professional level... and I know it hasn't. The things that make the horn more difficult then other instruments don't become as apperent until you get into more difficult music.
well, actually, I crossed over from trumpet to horn and my tone is pretty nice. It's probably because my tone was a little to dark when I played trumpet.
i totally agree with you mukwic. i'm a horn player and i can't stand when trumpet players try to play horn. it's so bright and nearly almost always SHARP. it drives me crazy.
Giovanni plays the horn so great that his artistry is one of my greatest finds via any media. I played horns and reeds and dreamed of playing a French horn. Playing these YouTube video's of Giovanni's is an important part of day, I watch all his motions while playing and I watch for the cool ways he takes leave of his horn at the song end. I would love to have transcriptions of all his recorded solos. Too much. One of my biggest finds on the internet is Giovanni Hoffer.
Wonderful groove going here! Understated, but any horn player around can appreciate the virtuosity going on here. I'm a horn player with a full college degree and I must say that getting off the ground at all playing jazz on horn is an amazing feat. This guy is way cool!
Jazz on the horn is so difficult, even the great late Denis Brain had very little success in this genre. Excellent example of what can be done. Thanks for sharing this with us.
i play horn, and started to play trumpet just so i could play jazz, the horn is just not a really jazzy instrument most of the time, but when it is played well the horn is good for anything lol
it's just that you don't see horns in jazz bands, i mean it's usually only trumpet, trompone, all the saxes, a rhythm section, keyboard, and some guitars and basses. I play the horn and i have nothing against it to play in a jazz band, although i prefer the french horn sound in an orchestra or concert band (i usually play trompone parts that suck, cause when i transpose the notes end up being in the lower register, which some hornists aren't good at)
@jjmm47 i know the feeling. just started playing horn/trumpet in jazz band this year. i prefer to play the fourth trumpet part on horn if the first trombone is low....or i'll just pop the bone part up. sounds good with a lot of chord structures.
this guy seriously inspired me to play on with my french horn not saying i'am quiting but his like inspiring me more even when i'am already inspired lol

Sigue adelante que hace mucha falta que la trompa entre mas de lleno en el mundo del jazz. Animo¡¡¡¡¡¡

Increible, me encanta!!! Sigue adelante que está genial!!! Por cierto me podrías decir que boquilla utilizas? La trompa es una Yamaha, no?
Yo utilizo una Holton, pero me resulta algo dura para tocar, que me recomiendas?

i'm really experienced with it, so i guess thats why i may not seem quite as impressed as you.
I played at the Majestic theatre when i was 16, with my private instructor and 14 other horns.

No freakin way a trumpet player could pull off such a dark rich tone. Trumpet kills horn chops, and horn kills trumpet chops.
