Eric Cressey is an outstanding deadlifter. Some people seem to think that he is leaning forward but the idea is to let the shoulders come forward to reduce the distance of the pull however the back stays tight the entire time. If his back started to round over then it would be dangerous but it doesn't . He's tight and just pulled a huge deadlift for his weight class.
EC is strong. I respect him very much because he's a great strength and conditioning coach. However, WHAT'S the point of lifting this heavy, even if you are able to do it? Is it just for ego? Is Eric Cressey a professional athlete who makes money from deadlifting this heavy weight? Yes, he's strong - but so what? What can he do with his strength? I bet EC is 3x as strong as guys like BJ Penn and Shinya Aoki. The difference is Penn and Aoki can DO SOMETHING with their strength.
@bsumiko It's a sport, he enjoys lifting heavy barbells. He used to be a competitive powerlifter. If the goal of any hobby is to make money, then it's not a hobby. Also his powerlifting career helped launch his coaching career as people tend to listen to guys who lift 3.5x their bodyweight.
@bsumiko Showing how strong you are shows how efficient your movement is and how solid your form is. You can't deadlift 660 with bad form or else you will blow your knees and back out so he is demonstrating how strong and efficient his movement pattern is. A regular person watching this guy who doesn't even look that big doing so much weight would make them want to train with him and would make him more money so that is the point of lifting heavy.
How are people commenting on his form...it is a straight on shot, you can't really see anything regarding his leg positioning or low back.
If you're talking about his upper back being bowed...it is supposed to be--gives you a mechanical advantage. Talk to Andy Bolton about it, he just DLed 1003.
@FactoryClosure in fact, Andy Bolton has lift 953 pounds raw, plus he got world record for deadlift. Also, Konstantins squat about 727 pounds or so. Andy squat about 1213 pounds...
Even if he lifted 200 lbs less than that it would still be impressive for someone around 180lbs. If there's only one truth in this world, it is that if you put a weight lifting video on youtube there's someone watching you who A) Can lift more or B) Can find a flaw in your form.
Dude, you don't have to find a flaw in his form, he has no form. Its just move as much weight upwards as possible for this scrawny soon to be handicapped fool.
"Dude, you don't have to find a flaw in his form, he has no form. Its just move as much weight upwards as possible for this scrawny soon to be handicapped fool."
...
Okay, three things...
1.) He has nearly PERFECT form for a max lift. Anyone who knows anything about deadlifting could see that.
2.) "move as much weight upwards as possible" is the point of powerlifting!
@wsman18 lol @ you, this scrawny soon to be handicapped fool is one of the most successful strength coaches in America and is literally at the forefront of effective injury prevention and rehabilitation. Do yourself a favour and google "eric cressey" before you post on here and make an idiot of yourself again. You sound like one of those piss weak bodybuilder types who have roided 18 inch arms but cant chinup your bodyweight more than 6 times
First off, I don't give a fuck who this guy is. His form is terrible and dangerous. When the spine is put in a state of flexxion the discs are compressed by the body of the vertebrae and the weight isn't supported by the facets. Under any amount of weight in such a position causes disc damage. I don't care how successful this strength coach is, physiologicaly his form is causing spinal damage. Argue it with a chiropractor or physiologist dumbass.
@wsman18 1) I am certified exercise physiologist. 2) Have you ever attended a powerlifting meet? The form is horrendous... yet nobody gets hurt. Why? because they've trained with perfect form year round and incorporated a lot of remedial type lifting, so that when attempting a PR (usually at a meet), they're able to sacrifice some form for extra poundages. You can't even see the angle of his back in this vid anyway. Just respect it, the dudes pulling 650 @ a bodyweight of 175...
@hendrixian1 Bull shit your an exercise physiologist. You wouldn't even begin to know where the first ionic change occurs in flexxing your finger. You can tell the angle of his back is the same as in his other crap videos.
@wsman18 Unless you can pull a 1RM with pristine form, I suggest you keep to yourself. You armchair experts never cease to amaze and disgust me. I'll bet you don't even train.
@wsman18 I am a chiropractor and a certified ART guy. And Eric knows what he's doing and you don't know what you're talking about. Yes, I do know Eric and I remember when he first wrote at T-Nation. And I remember when he was deadlifting app. 400 or so pounds. He'll be jsut fine and you'll still be weak.
