  • Was this song written as an attack on the Monkees?

  • I have a dream of being a famous musician, somehow i know it will happen, but i also feel as if it will be impossible. Every time i listen to this song, i get a confidence boost, and i feel like my dream will come true, eventually. I'm only 13 now, but if 10 years from now, i am a famous musician, remember this comment!

  • This song is sooooo short!

  • @theyellowsubmarine98 listen to the tom petty's one

  • @srrfpp I think it satisfies my length needs. thanks!

  • 440ci-2bbl Mopar.........whipped them all, without having to run wide open!!!

  • great little ironic ditty : seems like a nice driving cuban beat, with a rock drive to it,and it is. but check out the lyrics, they really address how much the bullshit of fame, can fuck anyones head up, if they are not grounded. always liked this,i just understand it on another level now.

  • @brainsareus The lyrics and the sound of screaming fans also goes right to the mania that'll "tear you apart"--on 8 December, 1980, one "fan" who shall forever remain nameless got himself a gun to assassinate the one whose fame he wished to take for his own. The fool with gun is not even a footnote, and he knows it. But what price fame...

  • my english book brought me here...not kidding

  • This proves how splendid the Byrds were. I just got memory of this after seeing Tom Petty do this. I have known this since I was a kid. It was on the soundtrack for a modern Disney movie. Now I have Younger Than Yesterday and going to enjoy the versions the song I have (Both Byrds and Petty). Nothing quite beats traditional rock. Too bad America has failed to deliver much of it anymore.

  • great audio

  • @OldSpiceRatherNice It was shot and killed in 1980 by Mark David Chapman...

  • Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman wrote this song, not Tom Petty. Petty was about 15 years old when this song came out.

  • The original composer is Tom Petty.

  • Does anyone know what that weird noise in the background is?

  • @slpplexi1969 That's a percussion instrument called a guiro. It's traditionally a hollow gourd with ridges carved in it though they're now made of many materials. It's played by dragging a stick across the ridges similar to a washboard. A google or wikipedia search on Guiro will show pictures and further explanation.

  • There's plenty of good original stuff around today. You just have to look a bit harder to find it.

  • One of the greatest rock songs of all time. Glad I grew up in the 50' 60's & 70's. The music today makes me wanna ralph.

  • @nikofazz my 12 year old call new music "diarrhea". He is raised on classic music and organic music :)

  • @laurasurfer . Smart kid. I just ordered a CD of Little Anthony and the Imperials yesterday so that's how varied my musical taste is. Check them out. The song I love on the cd is Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop. I remember watching my folks dancing to it it in 1959 when I was a mere 7 years old. I love anything from 50's, 60's & 70's. Wish I could go back.

  • Oh does Chis Hillman do it up with that Bass after a tremendous opening riff!

  • Who let the Justin Bieber fan vote "dislike" on this song?!?

  • WONDERFUL I MISS MY YOUTH . OLD AGE SUCKS

  • Just get an electric guitar

    Then take some time

    and learn how to play

And with your hair swung right

    And your pants too tight

    It's gonna be all right

  • I hope they have a substitute bassman cause this one's gonna be tired as hell plucking those think strings after the 1st set.

  • May sound corny...but this moved me to tears. What a sound.

  • awesome audio, thank you

  • Non programmed artists, yeah. there is a loud message, cannot be bought.Music is always free.

  • I was 8 years old when the Byrds released this song. When I heard the screaming of the girls in the background, it gave me a wide-eyed feeling of, "They all want me". Hey, I was just a kid. That's what imaginations are for.

  • @SirReal1958 If your screen name says "1958" then I assume that's the year you were born. 1958 + 8 = 1966. Is that the exact year the Byrds did this one? Or could it of been '67. Are the Byrds the very original artist of this? We know it's not Patti Smyth or Perl Jam. Do you remember a band from the 60's called "The Robbs"? I never heard of them till now. They also did this one in 1967.

  • I know some people don't care much for the horn but I think it's great.

  • Saw Roger McGuinn and his 12 string rick in Cleveland in the early '90s. Still sounded as good.

  • patti smith's version is better. sorry love the byrds too

  • this song kicks total ass!!

  • EXCELLENT SOUND FROM THE REMASTERS,THIS SONG ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MrMegaFredzeppelin

And I'd rather be a rock 'n roll star than a rap star any day of the week.

  • @onthemoveagain In my opinion you already are.

  • a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate,

a time for war and a time for peace.

  • Then it's time to go downtown

Where the agent man won't let you down

Sell your soul to the company

Who are waiting there to sell plastic ware

  • The screaming fans heard in this song was taken from a Beatles concert.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS GREAT SONG

  • great song

  • It now looks like it is no longer necessary to sell your soul to a label, in order to make it. With Youtube, internet and patience, it is possible to be self-employed fully, as a rock star.

  • What does it mean to re-master? Do you go back and re-mix the instruments? change the effects on the song? thanks.

  • @nicodagger Remastering is where they suck every last bit of life and energy out of the original, by upping all the levels to what the abused modern eardrum listener is used to... while it makes it louder, the intricacies of the music are buried and the 'punch' is gone.

  • i think i stopped listening to this song after hearing the first verse sung...

  • Best song ever to play on an open Interstate, with 300+ horses under you, leaving all in the rearview mirror........my Sr, Year in HS, when the parents were on vacation, I took my Dad's 440ci TNT Chrysler out on the road and left many in the dust and shaking their heads......what a high!!

  • @toddwindyhill: Early Spring, 1967......by June, it was "ship time".

  • Then of course there's the great Hugh Masakela on that Trumpet!

  • Great guitar riff. Then the rest is Chris Hillman on that far out Bass!

  • Oh, man! I love this song!!!!! What memories!!!!! Thank god they played this in 'Nam!

  • @bernwei1 Brilliant... thank God they played this in 'Nam!!! Brilliant...

  • Didn't we all, and don't we still

  • Once upon a time... talent sold records

  • happy birthday david crosby

  • the average faggot only lives to be 42. Sin kills. God bless you, and your short life DaveS

  • @radicright Take that nigger dick out your mouth.

  • one of the greastest

  • To me, Chris Hillmans bass line makes the tune. It's a perfect counterpoint to the guitar line. Classic rock n' roll here.

  • @stretch54

not sure there was a better bass player ever

  • @fluffythecat2 oh, I'm pretty sure Jack Bruce trumps it. If not thrn Mccartney? the Bass lines to Lucy in the sky and daytripper didn't write themselves.

  • No, in 1967 I wanted to be a jet pilot, race driver, or ship captain..........flew on numerous jet flights, sailed on and steered a 70,000 bbl tanker........later worked with and for some NASCAR teams...........never actually did what I dreamed of, but close.

  • As a matter of fact, I do want to be a rock and roll star. Anyone else?

  • @SeattleLA The average "rock and roll star" lives to be 40 years old. In Britain its only 35. Are you still in?

  • Comment removed

  • @radicright fuck yeah!

  • @SeattleLA me want to be a rr star

  • This song is when as a young girl (who shared a bedroom with a sister several years older and hense breathed in whatever 60s music she had playing) I fell in love with trumpet playing. The trumpeter just made this song flutter up and around and on and on until the end, smooth as could be.

Many years later I found out that my favorite trumpeter of all time Hugh Masekela, was the trumpet player in this recording.

  • The Bass player definitely does his job. I think Chris Hillman; could be wrong. Definitely a rock guitar opening; one of the best!

  • Love the song. One of of my favorites! Thew Byrds will live forever.

  • This is Excellent sound, originally on the Younger Than Yesterday album. Those were the Hashbury Daze, in a Purple Haze, haha. Regards, The '62 Mathew St. Band (1 Man-Full Group Retro)
