i try to do the same stress test on my test machine running windows 7(64bit) ,i7, 4gb ram. running 64 compile job , run HD and 4 tab firefox. it just go boom... BSOD
I got this running on ubuntu 10.10 (Installed the 11.04 kernel (3 deb file) and rebooted. Video driver got automaticly relinked to the kernel. Improvement is AMAZING ! Especially flash, I can watch 1080p video in full screen being very smooth on youtube now... It used to be bairly possible in flash at 720p. Thanks for this patch
combine this with bfs and increase timer frequency to 1500 hz and boom there, you got something faster than light speed. not rely, but you understand what i mean.
Thanks for the reply. I was worrying indeed because kernel updates made Ubuntu 10.10 incompatible with those, until their 16/11 update. But this one's just processor-related, so that's great.
not really. it only makes a difference if you have multi core processor or have a cpu supporting hyperthreading. basically, the more the hyperthreading support and cores, the faster this patch will be.
There is an article on webupd8.org with a few changes you can make to your system which parallel what the new patch will do. The page is called "alternative to 200 line patch" - patches are available i think, but you may prefer to wait until 2.6.38 or a kernel with the patch built specifically for your distro is released, or if you'd prefer to compile a patched kernel yourself :)
@bcoco85 2.6.38. .37 is just closed, so allowing a month or two for putting .37 to test, then the merge window for .38, give it 4 months for safe expectations.

That amount of CPU cores you've got is just silly.

@aelia92 what does he even need a scheduler for with 12 cores?

Can you anyone direct me to a page on how to actually apply this patch? I've never patched a kernel before.

Is it compatible with nVidia legacy drivers? (My laptop has a Geforce4 440 Go and a P4 1.8)
jbmaru 1 year ago
@jbmaru it has nothing to do with graphic drivers, so don't worry about.

When and how to get this update? My old crappy laptop have some problems with 1080p :P

There is no parallel. I thought I was cool with -j7 and still being able to do things, but god, this is amazing!

@bcoco85 Kernel 2.6.38 likely because the previous one is feature-frozen.

anyway, great scheduler improver...
