btw, thank you for the review. How long did you leave it in the icy water for? Waterproof cameras claim to be waterproof for some simple test, but I wonder the durability it can lasts under icy water or can it lasts for at least an hour.
@everythingsablur We haven't had a chance to test any of the new waterproof cameras besides the WG-1. As this was a pre-production camera I wouldn't make a final verdict on IQ. The stills look excellent from what we shot, especially the dynamic range, as you can see in the last photo of the video. We will be doing a waterproof camera rundown once we get production models from Panny, Pentax, Sony and Fuji.
I am really impressed that you gave it the water test. I was thinking about getting one of these for holiday snorkeling trips. I've never tried to shoot under water and it sounds like this may actually work. Thanks!
How do you find the still image quality and optics? These tough cameras have never been in the same league as an LX5/S95/XZ-1, but I've got to dream a little. :) Would love a rugged compact with high IQ to compliment my bigger SLR/ILC cameras.
@everythingsablur The IQ from the Pentax is quite good, especially in terms of the optics. It still does not compare to the IQ of a high end compact, like the units you mentioned. I would certainly be interested in a camera like that, but the larger sensor would require a much larger, heavier body. A good compromise is a waterproof housing for the S95. Sure it'll be bulky, but it will take great picture.

My WG-1 stopped working after 5 minutes underwater during a snorkel. It was almost new and first time underwater. Very disappointing Pentax.
