I've never quite figured out....is Lefty supposed to be 1 of those 1920's/Al Capone kind of people? Him and his boss (the blue guy with the derby hat on -like in the golden 'AN' skit.) remind me of the kind of people in those type of movies.
Lefty has eyebrows it looks like!!!! I can't find the skit with Left and Ernie..where Ernie says" Even Steven, Buddy" I went through all the skits...I don't remember what Lefty was selling...
They had Lefty back then? It's funny how pussified and stupid many American parents have gotten, as they got this character taken off the air. Cause hey, why not let a TV show tell you fantasy from reality.
It always cracked me up how Lefty "shushes" Ernie and he gets startled and then whispers it. But on this one Ernie got him back! hahahahah Love it!! thanks for posting this!
@Cloudwacher22 Where did you find the information on the numbered episode and air date? I would love to watch additional clips from Season 1 on DVD or youtube. Thanks! :)
@finnishminnow What I mean is, when Ernie explains that he's given Lefty an invisible nickel, I think what should have happened next is Lefty said "an invisible nickel?!" too loudly, and Ernie should have shushed him then.
I must say Lefty is definitely one of my favourite classic Sesame characters (along with Sherlock Hemlock and Don Music). I remember I even drew a picture of Lefty selling the nickel symbol for our giant Periodic Table in chemistry class last year, and the teacher liked it so much that to this day it's still on display in his classroom...
I agree, and I was also wondering why Lefty didn't ask Ernie to buy the R. I also wonder if Lefty wasn't going to sell the R to Ernie, I wonder why he shushed Ernie. He only shushes Ernie only if he's selling something to Ernie. Maybe the reason why Lefty didn't sell the R to Ernie because R is probably Lefty's favorite letter, or maybe he only said R to Ernie because that was probably his way of saying that R is the best letter out of the 26 letters, while Ernie says that P is better.
I like the part where they say P and R.

Does anyone have the Ernie and Lefty sketch where Lefty tries to sell Ernie a snowman?

There's a clip fairly similar to this one: the one with Ernie turning the letter P into the letter R. Has anyone got that in English?
Garrettk41 2 years ago
This sketch appears on:
"Sesame Street" episode 0129 (May 7, 1970)
Lefty: This isn't over, Ernie! I swear to god, one day, I'll fix you and your letter P, as well, too!
Ernie: God, what a jealous salesman trying to brag about my letter P with his letter R. I just don't think that's right!

00:08 sound like Frank Oz performing Lefty here instead of Carroll Spinney.
Cloudwacher22 2 years ago
Frank usually did Lefty. Carroll only did Lefty's voice a few times.

You know what I've found insteresting about those Season 1 skits is that pratically EVERY Muppet insert has a tan background.

Aww, that's okay, Lefty. At least I think R is a great letter.
His face at 1:00 is priceless!

It was pretty funny when Ernie said "Ssssshhh" like Lefty after Lefty said that letter loudly.

Ernie and Lefty were funny when they started bickering about P and R.
Rltpage 3 years ago 2
Odd for a Sesame Street sketch, because the conflict never really gets settled; Ernie and Lefty just name letters until one of them runs away.
ISNorden 3 years ago 2
It's also odd that Lefty just names the R instead of asking Ernie if he wants to buy it. He usually comes right out and says he's selling something.
loveutoto 3 years ago 2
Yeah, they should've just used Bert instead of Lefty here: no selling or "shady dealing" is involved in this sketch!
