I'm sick of everyone arguing over who's arrangement of this song is the best. If you like this composition, I think one should give a nod to all arrangements. One of the beauties of music is the interpretation of a melody. What Love did was translate this song into what was popular in LA at the time, which meant simplifying. To argue that one arrangement is inferior is like saying Ode to Joy is inferior to the 9th's overture because it uses less notes.
The godawful kermit the frog soundalike that is the bastard Ronan Keating has covered this on album entitled When Ronan Met Burt. Burt are you really that hard up? :(
Great Burt Bacharach song, and Tony's is far superior to the versions by Love and Manfred Mann (sorry guys). What label was this released on in the U.S.?
Sorry but I disagree. Arthur Lee gives this song an urgency and tragic desperation that no one can touch..you can literally hear the tears in Lee's voice as he wails it. And Love's arrangement is sheer perfection too, very tribal, earthy sound that really grabs you, unforgettable!
Great dance beat, lyrics will pass when you think of it. The guy still has that gal on his mind, she was the best, but she said goodbye and now that he has taken out every girl in town, the one the left him is still the best. Okey, okey situation, if the one you first loved and be replaced, which I believe is usally the case with the pre-married guys. The situation that this guy sings about , reminds me of the song "First Loves Never Dies", and I tend to believe now that i'm older. THX
This is the best out of any other pop versions on this song, however, you have to consider that Love were the only artists to do a folk-rock cover, hence the difference in key between the chord changes.
this is good, but Love's version is so badass. most covers of this song that carried into the 70's 80's and 90's was inspired by Love's version. even the white stripes covered it
This sounds like a Burt Bacharach song. Done by Love, it doesn't. That doesn't make Love's version bad (in my opinion), just different. I like Love's version a lot. In fact, it was here on YouTube that I learned "My Little Red Book" was a Bacharach song, and I was very suprised.
This would explain why the right notes were in the song - it was Burt's orchestra backing! Middleton wasn't gonna play fast and loose with the melody! It has more soul than Mann AND more accuracy than Love. I still like the down and dirty character of Lee's vocals, even so.
I Love this site, but this is a truly awful record! Esp. when compared to other T.M.records.

Gotta give him props for knowing a good song to do. All versions of this song are good. Burt B. gets the props for writing it though.

also countless garage bands did their take from the love version. its sweet to hear horns in this version, been on a horn kick lately..no clue why.
