The greatest Herman of the last 50 years - the voice beautiful, powerful and the acting totally convincing in everything he did...a great great artist on a par with Vickers and anyone active in the West during that time or since. I heard him once in Vienna in Un ballo and I will never forget the impression he made.

@bodiloto : hai ragione carissimo amico, ma ATLANTOV aveva una fortissima personalità ( cosa molto rara oggi ) e poi conosceva benissimo il mestiere. Voci come quella di ATLANTOV non esistono più ! Nell'Otello è riuscito a dar vita in modo straordinario a un personaggio complesso e, a parte qualche leggera forzatura nei passaggi più complessi, anche le note c'erano tutte. Qui canta un altro interprete a me molto caro : il compianto M.Manuguerra, voce poco potente ma per me molto bella. CIAO !!!

@bodiloto : amico mio, sappiamo tutti e due che M. Manuguerra non aveva la potenza vocale di Guelfi, Popov, Bastianini ... Ma Manuguerra aveva classe e aveva una bellissima voce da baritono lirico, con acuti sempre molto sicuri e squillanti. S. Milnes, a 60 anni, era inascoltabile, Manuguerra a 60 anni cantava ancora molto, molto bene, e poi aveva gusto, sapeva dare il giusto peso a ogni sfumatura ; ascoltarlo per me è sempre un piacere. Baritoni come lui purtroppo non esistono più. CIAO !

He was really a great artist. So sad, that he could not make a real int. career because of this stupid iron curtain. And remember, that the most of these recordings were made in his late. Also it was a HUGE sound and always a headache for soundengineers.

Well I don't know every dramatic tenor there is in Russia but is had to imagine that someone can get near to this level of singer.

It is sad that has scheduled Met performances during his prime years were canceled because of international politics

I saw him a Otello at a matine st the Met ,he was trememdous.And he was at the end of his carear .

I saw him sing this at the ROH in about 1990. I thought he was fantasic. The sort sort of Canio that could really do a murder on stage! A great talent and a stentorian voice. Any clips of him singing Otello please?
