Deek, this is horse shit and you know it. "they get what they need by being alive". Come on, have you even gone camping in the mountains for a few days? In "nature" you get what you need by struggling against all the odds and only the toughest luckiest most quick witted will get what they need by merely "being alive". The rest perish, often in horrific agony.
You're satire is cool, but this is horse shit and it pisses me off. (actually I'm cranky because I have to work now. Oh the irony)
@Pulchism I'd call 'having to buy back your stolen right to be here at market rates', a larger constraint on your freedom than your imagination. Most people spend most of their lives tying to pay back for their right to be here.
@magrathean0 I was referring to those of us in the West. They (us westerners) pay for their right to participate in established society. They can have the freedom of the raccoon if they want, along with the dirt, disease, and starvation. Is that kind of 'freedom' something you think good?
Yes I'll spend my life paying for my shelter, food and clean water amongst a myriad of other 'constraints'. And yeah there are rich bollixs out there with more than their fair share, but...(cont)
@Pulchism its not the rich or 'theiving' f*cks that are limiting my freedom. Its my lack of original thought, my susceptibility to influence of advertising/etc, my lack of courage to actually genuinely follow a conviction that would separate me from consensus reality or the status quo.
While I enjoy the sentiment and the kick ass comedic value of Deeks videos its basically mental wanking for the middle class. (did you hear that Deek? Yes I'm a tosser, but go on and refute my toss!!)
@Pulchism The point of the video is they don't have the freedom of the raccoon. So either you are saying that's incorrect and we do have those freedoms or you are saying it is right they should pay to have those freedoms. It's a bit contradictory to say both that we have those freedoms, but it would be right if we had to pay for them.
@magrathean0 We perhaps interpret the video differently.
I see it as saying "we don't have the freedom of lowly mammals such as the raccoon", in terms of the fact that we are obliged to conform to social norms, contract our selves to rich employers to earn the right of sufficient food, shelter, medical treatment, etc.
My point is that, yes, this is what we do, but that this constitutes much greater effective freedom than the apparent freedom of the raccoon- specifically concerning...
@Pulchism the ease at which us Westerners can obtain sufficient food, shelter, etc.
I'm not saying things can't be better.
I just think its sensationalist, or worse, to make a direct comparison between the "suffering" we Weseterners endure for grub and a roof over our heads, and that of animals whose lives are dominated by hunting for food and avoiding becoming food... and perhaps a sum total of five minutes of pleasureless sex in their brutish and short life times.
@Pulchism I think you would agree a central heated house beats a coat of fur, that a solid front door and the police are better than claws, and that systemised agriculture and animal husbandry beats foraging for nuts and the occasional stringy rodent hands down.
Regarding "paying" for these priveleges - just look at what people spend their hard earned cash on - holidays abroad, cars, home improvements.... does this realistically look like the behavior of slaves? Or people lacking imagination?
@magrathean0 No, I disagree with the point of the video, as I see it as making a misleading comparison for effect rather than an illuminating comparison with some kind of meaning.
If I thought it was essentially correct, my opinion would be that our lives are effectively more restricted than those of raccoons in some kind of practical or intellectual way. I can't honestly imagine what form such a restriction would take, which should be evidence enough of my integrity, unless you can propose one?
@Pulchism You appear to agree with some of the points made but not agree with the implied conclusion (that we live in a state of camouflaged slavery). A practical example of a restriction: they (people in the west) are dishallowed from building their own shelter without ‘proper permission’.
@magrathean0 I should be clearer then: I don't agree that the raccoon has more freedom than us, in any practical respect.
I don't see any other kind of point being made in the video..
Regarding your example, being "dissallowed" from building just anywhere.. this is the price paid to have running water, sewage, electricity and a protective shelter that will last a lifetime, not to mention having a gigantic population to house. You are still free to move to an uninhabited region to build a shack.
@Pulchism You are only free to do this in an 'uninhabited area' if this uninhabited area isn't already claimed by a permission giver. So, you are free only if a rule hasn't yet been made up to stop you? Secondly, If you are the permission giver, the 'price paid' for water, sewerage etc isn't paid by you at all, it is a price received by you in payment from others. It's this theft of liberty transmuting into the effective theft of actual things (water, food, work), the video alludes to.
@magrathean0 "You are only free... ...permission giver" yes, thats true. Its still freedom though, and orders of magnitude greater than that of the raccoon.
"..it is a price received by you... payment from others" I don't get what you mean, unless you are saying that if you are richer than someone you are not actually paying for things when your material gain in a given transaction exceeds the material gain of the other (less well off) party.
To me the video says the ordinary joe has less...
@Pulchism freedom effectively than a raccoon because a raccoon can live where it wants and doesn't have to pay for food and shelter. I say this is sensationalist crap.
Perhaps I shouldn't take it seriously but I think people really do delude themselves that a "return to nature" is like walking into a land of milk and honey with smiling raccoons who aren't tearing the flesh off their fellow creatures or having the favour returned just to survive while most of their offspring die in infancy.
@Pulchism "unless you are saying that if you are richer than someone you are not actually paying for things"
I'm not really talking about 'things', I am talking about permissions. If I hold permission privileges then others must pay me for my permission? Ok, you said that this system was price we [all] had to pay for order. But if some pay for permission and others are paid for it, then it is not a price paid by all - it is rather a price paid by some to others.
