ever since i first heard this been really interested in what kind of instrument that is in the background when FERRY'S, not singing..guitar..sax..synthesizer..beats me..this song is off a bootleg from this concert called "WHY DO YOU THINK YOU'RE A FUNKY CHIC" something like that, not certain...my brother bought it..the concert was in support of the album "SIREN".
@801liveable That vinyl bootleg is called 'Why Do You Think I'm a Funky Chick?' It was a double LP sourced from an FM broadcast of this January 27, 1976 show in Stockholm. :)
@xavierbaudet Isn't the intro the same? Same rhythm, similar tune? For the record, I prefer "Editions of You", even though "Street Life" is the more famous song, the single.
Similar band, different tune, different rythm! The chords are differrent and so is the groove. But both are mad over the top `art rock' songs. So I guess the concept is the same. But Streetlife is more sophisticated, less basic than Editions Of You. I prefer Streetlife for that reason.
@xavierbaudet I have spent some time listening to both songs back-to-back. I think the intros to both songs are similar (like, they both go Der-dun, Der-dun-dun, Der-dun-dun-dun da), but then they go in somewhat different directions after that. Anyway, I guess it doesn't really matter, because they're both great. Am I right in thinking there's a nexy Roxy record coming out soon, or was that just a rumour?
I think it's just a rumour, Bryan Ferry has a succesful new album out, that he made with (among others) Eno. I guess that's the roxy album that was rumoured. I really wonder what Roxy would sound like, though. I'd love them to return to the organic sound of the early 70s. I don't like the later Roxy much, but Ferry appears to prefer the smooth More Than This/Dance Away/Avalon sound.
@xavierbaudet Huh. I love the early Roxy & the later Roxy, too. I think Ferry's made some great solo records. I keep meaning to check out Dylanesque, because I'm a big Dylan fan. I prefer Eno's solo career, but then, he was never really a true member of Roxy Music; I always see him as more of a guest star.
@Queenesy: First: i did not write that, but the NME or others, second: i did not write here that it was an insult, i wrote "he got lovingly mocked" which was about with jet set allures (irony!) at that time which i didn´t mind nor others. Bryan could and can stay as he is !
@Queenesy: The NME was not the mainstream press at that time nor even today but one of the most influential music papers of all time, did a lot for the rise of the upcoming new wave scene......
@Queenesy: LOL,maybe the NME thought he played a bit the decadent Lord Byron(though i would like to know what Bryan has got to do with Byron imagewise)-speeding around in Ferraris. He was together with Jerry Hall a longer time(before Mick Jagger snapped her away)+during that period the NME featured a caricature(around 1979)with inserted words for Jerry with him together on a snapshot:"Bryan--the NME say you are passé"+he just screws up his face as if she is getting on his nerves....very funny.
@Bluespeyer Thank you. I have been saying this for years. He is one of the greats. BUT there was a documentary about great rock guitarists on tv and Manzanera was on it! He sort of narrated it too. I wish I could find it somewhere.
I saw this tour in Chicago. I too like the military look here. I would love to see a full front on shot of the RM shoulder patch, I would copy it in a heartbeat!
barryuk50.. yes dissapoinitng voting, but you should know mate, votes on you tube mean nothing! Roxy fans, (and I'm one) now how great they are...but for all the other crap comments, who cares what you lot think!
Yeah, Bryan had this Clark Gable 'stache' thing goin for a year or 2. I can't believe ANYONE remembers Sparks, as great as that outfit was. I really liked them too, they were damn good, but RM was totally just ____ . The 'mix' on this clip is kinda weak, but it's still worth it to get a glimpse of one of the greatest bands ever
@barryuk50 we are doing the cha cha till dawn and entering exclusive doors. some of us still have a handful of ludes and a head full of snow too. we're just ships in the night carrying very strange cargo. you never know where we may go.
Thanks for posting. I got to See Them in Jan of 1975. This Really takes Me back. Roxy Music Totally Rock. :)

Is it just me, or does "Street Life" have the same tune as "Editions of You"?

No it doesn't, but I can see what you mean.Something in the cadence, the rythm of the words that the two definetly have in common.

In the British music press (NME etc) Bryan got (lovingly!) mocked as "Byron Ferrari" at that time 76/77.....LOL
MrSKINFLICK 1 year ago
@MrSKINFLICK why is that an insult?
I know he wasn't popular amongst mainstream press. but Roxy's music hade a large impact on the british glam scene at that time....

@NoumaiosDeLaCampa That's fitting since both Roxy Music and Sparks were ahead of their time with that New Wave sound in the early-mid 70s.
