Somewhere in Africa, people are dying to get that stuff. And we have so much of it, we can throw it into a shredder for our entertainment... Economies of scale, bitches.
@sneezabonk it'll be out of date. a lot of the syringes are still in there 5 sheets. hospitals can't use things that have gone past the date as they may be too badly contaminated with germs by then.
I suppose it'd be okay to shred that kind of gear, as it's still cleaner than anything you'll find around the home. but for actual waste, 'incinerate only' stickers and tape exist for that reason.
I run a mobile medical waste shredder in Texas and its a piece of &#@$......... Hospitals will put hips joints and crap that dont belong in the shredder and you have to get in there with all the medical waste and dig the metal out from between the blades!!!
We used to use shredders and sometimes the shredding of containers with chemicals would cause a fire either by the chemical reaction of the chemicals combining or because of the chemicals being flammable and coming into contact with spark or heat caused by the shredding process
@opera22opera burning medical waste leashes harsh chemicals into the atmosphere while shredding/compacting it ur just making the material much smaller.
When Osma Bin Laden get's caught i would LOVE to see him thrown into this Death Chamber but i would slow down the cranks a wee bit just for him , i think it would be more exciting than flying planes into buildings, what do you say people thumbs up ?
@67George id imagine this is just to show that their machine would be good for destroying everything, if a hospital did buy one for that purpose im sure they would make a shredder that can be sealed airtight and have some form of filter system to get rid of airborn crap, and also maybe a direct feed from the shredder to a compacter, now that would be cool
@scoutII345 I don't think it matters whether it's sealed or not if you throw it in a shredder. Medical waste needs to be incinerated at a high temperature to destroy the pathogens therein. Improper disposal is just a recipe for an outbreak of deadly viruses and infections.
Yes Sir, it is, but SSI shredders are proposing that this is a good use for thier product. 'SSI Shredders, shows why a Quad shredder would be an appropriate shredder of choice to destroy medical waste'. They make a good product but I believe this would be a poor use of it.

exactly! thats why no one would ever do that. the containers for medical waste are designed so that they don't open or rupture even if you press them. so there is absolutely no point in shredding them. those things are filled with hazardous, infectious medical waste. the are taken from hospitals and labs and are incinerated right away - NO SHREDDING
@67George No. Used medical equipement such as needles are incinerated. This is clean stuff that has probably been rejected as a batch and needs cost effictive destruction.
So, when they shred real medical waste, can the recovered metal be used again even though it's contaminated with blood? The idea of marketing "recycled needles" doesn't put a lot of trust with the customers. "Ma'mm, we'll be drawing your blood today. Would you like to help out your community & use a 'recycled needle' instead?"
Of course it can be used again. The heat involved in re-forging steel is much, much greater than that needed to incinerate any virus and even prions (CJB aka Mad Cow). The only thing left of that blood will be a tiny handful of carbon atoms dispersed throughout the iron.
Federal regulations make hospitals throw away and destroy old like past the must use date and the stuff not used in operation kits even if they are not opened or used i agree it could be used in 3rd world countries and crap and alot of ppl that work at the hospital think so too but thats one other thing the government has screwed up with
That shredder needs to be standard equipment for a landfill facility as a 'last chance to recycle' stage. The metal needle particles would get picked out with magnets, and the rest looks like plastic and fiber that can be tossed into an anaerobic biofuel reactor.
Somewhere in Africa, people are dying to get that stuff. And we have so much of it, we can throw it into a shredder for our entertainment... Economies of scale, bitches.
