Well... I understand what this film is all abt only after reading those comments n not from the film but somehow good work done.. Hav to improve alot more tho.. But if u cant accept what ppl r commenting abt they dun understand tat means ur ego n egoistic means u "thought" u have done great.. Try again...
i love this film. I like the time lapse and slow motion shot. and the high socks too. those were the days. hahah. i suprise this was did 10years ago. wow
And i dislike people who dont understand this film. They are so typical. and i know how the director's feeling. i love experimental arthouse.
When I stand on higher ground, I feel great looking DOWN upon the World. But when I look up, there's always the vast blue sky looking down upon me. No matter how hard we try to stand out from the rest, there will always be someone above us. Being the best, at the top, is only an ideal, its like catching the wind...When yur in the crowd, everything goes so fast, n yur just like one of them. Then, u try to rise above th rest, everything slows from a high point of view, but never for long.
The film highlights the student culture in Singapore's education system, where doing well isn't good enough, but to be nothing but the best. The scene which shows the comparison of grades is crucial in showing that even though the diff is only 1 mark, it makes a great deal to that guy who commited suicide. A classmate of mine in Secondary school was distressed when he did not come in top in class for sec 4 prelim, and similarly, he was only 1 mark less from the top student during sec 4 prelims.
The pieces is there and can be understood, but what are they doing to the whole story, which is 'blue sky'?
What i try to interpret is, she has a superiority complex, that's why the scarring and stool incident. What about the grade? Is it just to illustrate the competitiveness that she has? I don't get why he commit suicide though.
Ok, now after i watched it, i didn't really get it.
I get the part where the girl is looking down and looking up to the sky.
But why the incident of the 89 - 90 grade? and afterwards, the guy commit suicide?
After then, she scarred the face of her rival. Again, why?
Then the sped up/slowmo/sped up part when she stands and suddenly she took a stool to stand higher. At least what i can get from this is that she has a superiority complex. She loves looking down.
love the colours, treatment and the concept. It's a very good short film. Art direction and the acting is good, it does not make me felt any way of awkwardness at all. For those who does not really get the story, read the logline and ur would get a btr picture of it. (:
but i try hard to get understand the meaning behind this story..after read thru the comments..i roughly understand it. But The visual ok...expecially sky scene..cz i liek sky!! haha...keep goin man!!
Guys it was a student film. A second year student film project... and I think it was more art house, and metaphorical than in your face commercial. The moments were there, the colours and composition were great.
This film truly shows the mentality of Singapore students: that the goal is not to score high, but score better. The pressures that Singaporean students, or most, put on themselves, manipulates there minds into thinking that good is never enough.
It is a sad realization, for these students, that there is always someone, something better than them. And they never seem to value and admire their true inner beautiful.
realised, even though she thinks she's the best, there's still someone out there who always better.
the scene where half the sky is bright and the other darkness.. -i think thats a great scene of showing that someone up there is having the power.. and not us.
the box, she's has an advantage over the rest and whats more she can even touch the ceiling. so it kinda indicates she has control on everything.
final scen of touching the sky-- presumably she stood at the highest point but she still can't reached the sky no matter how hard she tried. at that point she
alright. i'm sure the director did get his message across somewhat. the mirror scene: the girl looked at her reflection and i think she touched her face...--that kinda indicates the fact tt she thinks she looks better than the other girl, and she thinks she shd be the one to deserve attention from boys.
standing on the box scene: mmm, its a lil vague. but she's in an enclosed compound, so when she stood on
nice effects being applied in film however, i agree with justice pao that the message wasn't very well delivered in this case.. i'm just seeing effects after effects..if tht's what u wanna achieve then yeah i'm sure you had but in terms of message.. i dont really get it.
I seriously don't get the meaning and moral of the plot. Nice picture and terrain shooting though, although I think you could do better when shooting the girl look at the sky and below the building.

i liked how this short sat on the fence between abstract and conventional narrative and was confused, although some parts didn't work for me
I just have one pressing question, why did you use Japanese title for your short? it does not link to any part of your short film.

i think it's the girl who pushed the guy down since she is getting the superiority feeling in her.

The technical part of this film is fine.. just that the story line is too weird to understand.. What is the story trying to show??

good shots
has a dark feel to it which means the lighting control is good
also the scene in the underpass, interesting! fast motion, slow motion as if its trying to say something about time

great cinematography.
the slashing of the face looks a lot like the play "the face is the place" did you get it off there?
Overall, nice job there. (:

It is a beautiful film and you will see the meaning behind it once you see it from the perspective of a Singaporean student.
