  • how can i get the products u use.. I live in Va and never heard of those products

  • I'm not exactly certain. I think you can google Jamacian Mango and Lime products and try to order them through a website.

  • @natasjja99 i live in Va and they carry the product in sallys beauty supply store..i buy it and it works well!!!!!

  • How often do you wash your hair ?

(especially after you twist it) Great info!

I love your locs they are beautiful!

  • I'm soooo late with the comment, sorry, lol. But like in the summer time, there are times when I wash my hair daily.. I usually latch in the summer. In the winter probably once per week when it's really cold, but I'm not particular about my locs being really manicured anymore. When they truly loc you will see that you can stand to be fuzzy every now and then.

  • I am happy that I came across your video because you have the same type of hair I have. Nappy in the back and curly, wavy, and slightly straight in the front. I am in my 5th month of loc maintenace and I cut all my hair off too because I use to wear a relaxer. (I didn't know any better). Your video has enlightened me so very much and now I am working on patience with the locking process. and thank you Pinky.

  • you have beautiful loc's

how do you prevent lint. I was in the hospital for 3 months and when i got home i noticed little lint balls enbeded in my locs. when i tried to pick it out ,it seemed as though i was damaging my loc's, hair was coming out with the lint. do you have any advice?

  • Try doing an apple cider vinegar rinse to loosen it up then wash it rigorously. But if you pick it out, it's not damaging the hair that much. Usually what you are seeing is shedding hair that embedded in the loc. This is hair sheds anyhow normally so you aren't losing anything.

  • Why don't you twist on camera so ppl can see how to do it?

  • Hi Pinky, I just won't to say that u r beautiful and I really appreciate the many motivational videos u post here, I'm currently in the midst of opening a new salon and i'm very excited but could u kindly pass on those ingredients for that island oil, please thanks again and be blessed

  • Oh wow. I don't currently have a bottle in my home. Perhaps you can google Jamacian Mango and lime online to see if they have the ingredients list on their website? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful to you.

  • Enjoyed the info., just 9mons into my sister locks, yous said you clip after you twist over night. Please give me more info on this proceedure.

    Thanks, dio

  • On occasion when I do maintenance and my hair isn't dry before bedtime or I don't want to sit under a dryer. I simply leave the clips in overnight and tie my hair up. Then take them out in the morning so the maintenance won't be ruined by sleeping on it. That's all, no rocket science involved, lol.

  • This video is just great: your hair is supremely beautiful, your explanation wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing!

  • I understand. I'm using a olive oil, jojoba, and coconut oil mixture with rosemary as the eo to keep my little babies moisturized for now. So far, so good. Frizzy, but otherwise I'm enjoying the journey. Thx for replying :)

  • gorgeous locks!

Your locks look fabulous. I plan to start my lock journey next Saturday, however, I have three bottles of vegetable glycerin left (I purchased them when I did the BIG CHOP, thinking that I would be a regular natural head for life). Can I use my veggie/ essential oil combo mix on my locks during the early stages, or will it hinder the lock process? Thx so much for any advice.

  • I'm not certain, but it seems like the glycerin portion of it may keep the locs from begining to join to gether. It's a more "slippery" substance and may in fact hinder you. But the essential oils are good. That and a lil oilve oil and you're on and poppin ;)

  • jamaican mango and lime also makes a tingle shampoo that works well. i use it as a final step wash out at the end of my cleansing routine and for weekly washing.

now i feel inspired to create my own maintenance video.

    thanks

  • Go for it! Everyone's locking experiences and tips are helpful. We dont' all have the same hair types, so it helps when more of us share what we know so that someone else can find something new that works for them! Yeah that tingle shampoo is the bomb too, lol. I used it during my beginning stages and it felt sooooo good. :)

  • you look like one of my cousins.

nice vid. i wish i had seen this when i first started locking.

clarifying shampoo and apple cider vinegar, jamaican mango & lime products: great advice! great for deep cleansing.

  • i like you better with the fuzzies. freeform!

  • Beautiful hair! I'm so jelly! :)

Plz, can you tell what ingredients are in the JML orange loc gel?

I agree with you about being gentle with thinning aeas. I had near baldness from relaxer overlapping. I didn't notice for many months. But, I did BC last year having about 2-3 in of hair. Now I have btwn SlL& APL hair, tho that section is still not as thick as rest of head. Being gentle, not using much product, keeping it moisturized, and no chemis and good diet are what helped it grow.

  • Ingredients in the Orange JML gel are Deionized Water, Carbomer 940, Essence of Mango and Lime, Wheat Germ, Silk Protein, PVP, TEA, Natural Preservative, Shea Butter, Beeswax, Aloe, Passion Fruit Extract, Sea Grape Extract, Fragrance.

But you can tell by the consistency that the beeswax and shea buttter content is low, it's more a gel than a thick product.

  • Thankies. May try the JML twist & loc gel with my next twists. Still debating whether I should loc. But, if I have any loc questions in the future can I run them by you?

  • When you put the apple cider vinegar on your hair do you mix it with water? Also, I've just died my hair because I get a lot of grey in the front. Will the vinegar make my locs green? Thanks. I love my locs. I wanted to start them when I was in my teens but my family said they were "nasty" so it took me 20 years to get their nonsense out of my brain and now my hair is fierce.

  • I just put the apple cider vinegar on there straight with no water, let it sit for about 5 minutes or so depending on how long it's been and then shampoo my hair to make sure everything is out. I'm not certain abou the color change. I suggest you do a test with it with the tip of one lock in the back of your head. Wait a day and see the results before proceeding. I had a few grey hairs prior to coloring it, the color didn't seem to change, but everyone's hair is different.

  • Ive been growin my dreads for about 4 and a halfs months and ive only washed them once.I didnt start my hair short lyke you did it was probably twice the legnth. I didnt want to wash them because the ones on top are kind of soft and i didnt want them to come out. Could i wash my hair somehow without the process starting over. and also i have a couple toward ma necc that are fatter then the others. Is there a way to make them thinner like the rest?

  • Some people put a stocking cap over their heads and then wash their locks. It helps to hold them so they don't unravel during washing. The only way I know to make a lock thinner is to take it down, divide it then make 2 smaller locs. It's best to do it now before they mature or you will have a harder time with them later on.

  • hi pinky soo correcT me if im wrong but did you say if you twist your hair a lot itll thin...=( thats scary .. i usually twist ma hair like twize a week and back comb em like 1 a week ... am i doin too much... i had em for a month and 3 weeks.. the reason i maintain them alot is cuz i use absolutely no products wat so ever not even shampoo i only wash my hair with bar soap and blow dry it after..... i latch my roots when there like ann inch or two from my scalp...am i doin the right stuff

  • When your locs are new it won't effect them as much, but if you keep doing it like this for over a year you will see some thinning. I wouldn't worry about it right now, but once they begin to loc on their own you will see that you will require maintenance less anyway. Good luck and hang in there! Just follow where your hair takes you, it will let you know if it likes what you're doing or not, trust me :)

  • I love JML products. My new favorite is the Cactus Oil. It is a little thicker than the Island Oil but it smells devine.

    Shalom & Blessings!

  • Respeck. Gotta try sum of dat Island oil.

What did you use to help the thinning Pinky?

  • I didn't really do anything. I just left it alone after I stopped using the chemicals and it came back in fully. If you don't twist too tight or too often then your hair should just grow.

  • when did you actually start seeing growth

  • Kind of hard to say. They got puffy around my 6th month or so and then began to straighten out as they got heavier. It depends on what you consider growth. If you check out my loc journey video my hair never really "stopped" growing at all, each week there was a little bit more to see.

  • Hi Pinky,

My locs will be officially 3 years old come June 2 of this year and my locs are neck length.when its wet its past my shoulders... Im frustrated because it seems like it won't become that length without it be wet.Have you ever felt like your hair is at a complete stand still at this stage? Also I've noticed that my hair texture has changed and that it way more softer now than ever now that I have locs.. Did your hair texture change when you started locing as well?

  • They will start to hang soon. The weight of the loc itself will help to pull them down in a bit. Yes it seemed that they stood still for a few months but then all of the sudden they began to lengthen rapidly. Yes I found that I didn't see my real texture until at least 6 months after I totally was out of a perm with the ends cut totally off. It takes awhile to come back to it's original texture after using chemicals. Hair coloring included.

  • I luv u pinky!

  • Hi Pinky,

Love the video. I just got my hair twisted to start my locs about a month ago. I have been natural since May of o8. Did it cold turkey by wacking off all the relaxer, then going to the barber shop with my son to get it cut down almost to the scalp. I am so glad I did it. Could you tell me what the ingredients are in the oil you showed in this video. Thanks so much.

    Kim

  • Castor Oil, carrot oil, ginko nut oil, tea tree oil, wheat germ oil, olive oil, mango extract, lime extract, jojoba oil, hibiscus oil, sea grape oil, passion fruit oil and fragrance. It's a lovely mix :)

  • love your video girl,so happy I foung you

  • it's amazing how well our hair can do when we stop putting those fire creams in it. my hair grows like weeds...it always was growing, i just couldnt see it b/c of all the breakage from relaxers.

  • So did you sleep with the clips in your hair and let your hair completely air dry?

  • Yes I believe I did sleep with them in on this day. I don't always. If you find it uncomfortable you can always take the clips out around the outer edges once the hair dries somewhat and put a scarf on your head to hold the hair down while you sleep.

  • Quick question if you don't mind. I have kinda thick dreads (but not like Lil Wayne thick) and I just got em about 6 months ago. They are kinda stiff and some curl up like the ends did when i used to have braids. The only time they look good is when I get thru washin em and they actually hang and swing like they should. Is this normal and something that will get better with time? If not, what can you reccomend to get these thangs right?

  • I have a question for you. What did u put in your head before you had locs? I have "Doo Gro Growth Lotion" is that good? I just wanna have healthly hair before i loc it, ya know. Any advice?

  • I had no specific set of products prior to locking. I did the basic shampoo and conditioner type thing. Nothing special. The only thing that got it to be in it's most healthy state is leaving the chemicals alone.

  • I like your hair. I love when females go natural. Beautiful

  • Hey Pinky, do you clip your ends? I'm still getting my locs going (they're doing pretty good now), but I'm not sure if I should clip the little hairs that stick out of the bottom of the ball(end). I do it anyway, but I"m not sure if I should just leave'em alone.

  • No I don't clip them, I just let them do their thing now. I did a lot of clipping in the beginning thinking I still had perm on my hair like a dummy. I didn't, lmao! Anyhow, I waited till those ends wanted to come off on their own then helped it only when it was about to come totally off.

  • Is it ok to use any kind of shampoo on dreads?

  • Honestly I'm not certain. But, while investigating shampoos I read more often that you must be careful of "heavy" products that may cause extra buildup. Many loc wearers that I came across usually dilute their shampoo and conditioners prior to use. So I would just say be careful and pay attention to heavier products and the effect it has on your locs.

  • Your hair looks great! Very inspiring and you gave some good information. Thanks.

  • I agree, I love that stuff. I have tried Olive Tree Tea Oil and its heavier. I am going to look for your videos to Latch . Its so hard to find some one to do locks, and another thing to fit a hair appt into my schedule. Do some hairdo videos.

    Peace & Mango oil :)

  • I've made the latching video but I must process it and upload, look for it sometime this week. I must think of a good hairstyle to try. I keep it simple, down or pony tail, lol I gotta branch out a bit. Thanks for watching.

  • How do you apply the Island Oil? Do you just pour a little in your palm and rub it in or do you apply directly to the scalp and let it spread around on its own?

  • I do it both ways. I rub it on my palm then I use the tip to put it directly on the scalp in several places then massage it in with my fingertips. Nothing like a good head massage :) During the week I may freshen it up with just putting it on the locs and not the scalp to prevent buildup and flaking on the scalp.

  • so do u palm roll it but dont retwist yo roots? how do u retwist without twistin your rootes...i want mine thicker i get it retwisted once a month anmy roots well sum are thin

  • I do palmroll but don't twist my roots too tightly. I only do this every other month. I do the latch hook method every 3 months or so to alternate it. But the more you twist the more stress on your hair. When it gets longer and heavier you need a stronger and thicker rootbed to hold it. Once your locs are mature dealing with occasional root fuzzies is well worth it if you want your locs to remain strong enough to hold the weight.

  • Unfortunately the Jamaican Mango and Lime products are changing formulas. The island oil now has mineral oil in it. It is sad.

  • Dang! Now that's messed up! I hate it when they mess with a good thing trying to make it cheaper for them to manufacture. Now I gotta shop for alternatives, cause too much mineral oil is a no no! I just looked on my bottle, it's not there on the Island oil but I got it a year and a half ago when I stocked up on it. I wonder when they changed it???

  • i'm 8 months into my loccs and my hair is very curl lisa bonet like but i started to maintains it my self and i'm wondering how often should i retwist? also my edges in the front are very thin will they always be that way or will they thicking up

  • I usually retwist every 3 to 4 months so the locs won't become too thin and break. If you had a perm before, sometimes those chemicals thin the hairline. If that's the case, the longer you go without it, it should begin to fill in. Some have had permanent damage however. I wouldnt' twist this area too tight, let it breathe more and hopefully it will come back to where it was.

  • does the suave shampoo make your hair itchy I know when I wore my Fro and use the shampoo it made my hair very dry and how do you use the cider technique cause have a lil problem with lint buildup

  • No I haven't had an issue with itching but all scalps react differently to different chemicals. With the ACV rinse you just pour it over your head, sometimes putting a plastic cap on it for about 15 min, then rinse and shampoo. It helps to break up the buildup to be washed out properly.

  • your locs look nice! I am goin to get some isalnd oil.. Walmart carries that product line now..

    Thanks for the video!

  • The cool thing about it is that you can smell it in the store and see if you really like it or not. Some don't but I think it's yummy! lol

  • Your locks are beautiful. I love heavenly scents...I think I am going to have to get me some of that Island oil.

  • thanks for sharing the information, your dreads are really good looking, keep its ggod to see that strong hair

  • Thank you :)

  • How you doin Queen We pretty much use the same products I use the suave shampoo because it really get my hair clean Then I follow up with organic root stimulator Olive oil and aloe shampoo And I also use jamaican Mango and lime products that Island oil is good I use it on my daughter hair too...How long did it take for you to twist your hair And do you tie it down at night?*smile*...Peace

  • It takes me about an hour and a half now to twist my roots if I'm sticking with it. Sometimes I take breaks inbetween due to medical issues which prevent me from having my arms over my head for extended periods of time. I'm not as dedicated to tying it down at night as I used to be. I keep a satin pillow for these nights. Sometimes I just forget and pass out, lmao. I have several extra large satin triangle scarves to tie it down when I'm tring to keep it extra neat looking.

  • i was crackin' up when u were talking about the episode w/the island oil...lol

  • LOL, I didn't know if I should hit that guy and run or what! I live in Detroit, you never know around here.
