  • Would it be possible to get a longer column for a drill press like this and make it taller and more usefull for drilling into longer pieces of wood

  • THANK you! I couldn't freaking figure out how to change the speed, and it wasn't clear in the manual. (I bet if I go check ONE MORE TIME, I'll find that section all of a sudden!)

  • You will find that a milling vise is not useful on a drill press. What happens is that neither the table nor the drilling head are adequately secured to the machine column and that the table jumps as you are milling, ruining your work. You will be able to mill wood, but you will ruin almost all of your steel parts.

  • I have a similar press from Harbor Freight. I had a few super rare earth magnets sitting around ( like the ones inside a computer hard drive) and stuck one to the belt cover as a quick chuck key holder.

Just pull the key off the magnet and you're ready to go. Put the key near the magnet and it will pull the key right out of your fingers.

  • @flashgordonzeus

    Nice, thanks!

  • I have the same press along side a larger floor standing model. Love them both. Not for the high production shop but great for the DIYer!

  • @wingmanalive Agreed, for people like us, its perfect

  • @steveo928 the harbor fright welders are horrible though. only worth the money you can scrap it for.

  • @steveo928 FYI: The chuck has a morse taper. This has been used forever. Every machine shop in the country has or had a machine that has morse taper. The on off switch; in the off position, remove the insert (key), this prevents someone from turning the machine on. Great review! BTW, I dont like the spring in the chuck key either.

  • There's a name for people who won't wear eye protection. They're called BLIND.

  • Why do you have the Drill Press inside your home and not in the garage/shed? On the Power Switch, removing that key simply prevents anyone from turning it on.

  • The spring in the chuck key is a saftey feature to prevent you from accidentally leaving the chuck key in and turning it on. If you find it difficult to hold in, I suggest you start working out.

You shouldn't use a mallet to press the chuck in. The drill PRESS is actually a press itself and all you need to do is put a block of wood under it and use the handles to press it in.

A pressed in chuck is strong and safe. The wheel bearings on your car are pressed in.

  • @jjenson2006 suggest working out? woah there buddy calm down. most safety devises are there so people dont have to think. stay alert and pay attention and you wont leave the chuck key in. i suggest you working on your people skills. mr tough youtube commenter

  • @steveman223 Safety devices (not devises) are there for an ADDED MEASURE in case someone accidentally forgets (such as forgetting to remove the chuck key).

Having enough strength in your hand to overcome a safety spring in a chuck key doesn't make you tough.

Obviously the guy who I was posting to didn't get offended, therefore he isn't as weak minded as you.

  • @jjenson2006 sorry I made a typo...oh my. that right tells me where you stand mr tough internet guy haha.

ok..so for ADDED MEASURE I want you to wrap yourself in bubble wrap so you can keep yourself safe in case you fall down? deal? ok ok

or maybe he just didnt wanna give you the time of day. weak minded? first he needs to strengthen his hands and now i need to strengthen my mind? you are either fairly young or and old angry man. but you are attacking not only him but also me on youtube.

  • @steveman223

"I want you to wrap yourself in bubble wrap"

look guy, I'm not interested in your sick sex fantasies; so please stick to the subject.

"you are either fairly young or and old angry man."

I'm middle aged; you're not even close.

"but you are attacking not only him but also me on youtube."

What words did I use to attack him or you? I can't wait to hear your response.

  • @jjenson2006 sex fantasies? how old are you again little kid? lets stay on topic. its you who is trailing off..not me. ...haha middle aged with the mind of a child. thats pretty bad. what words? go back and read what you said...dont tell me your one of those idiots who flap their mouth and then forget what they said ..lol

  • Respond to this video... does that make you strong minded? lol

  • @steveman223 Where did I say I was strong minded?

  • @steveman223 Where did I say I was strong minded? I'm just not an oversensitive liberal like you.

  • @jjenson2006 hahahahahahaha liberal? so wait..does that make you a strong right wing conservative extremist who talks out his rear end because he doesnt know how to talk any other way? obviously you are a little sensitive if you are attacking back :-)

  • @steveman223

Overly sensitive people are usually liberal. They cannot handle constructive criticism.

If you get offended when I suggest that someone needs to work out because a spring is too tight for them, most people would see that as being too sensitive (or liberal minded).

I'm not attacking at all. I enjoy arguing with liberals; I find it highly amusing! :) They say such silly things.

I am libertarian, not right wing.

  • @jjenson2006 oh and by the way jenson. the manual for the drill press suggests using a mallet. if you read it it says use a block of wood with a mallet.

  • @steveman223

"oh and by the way jenson. the manual for the drill press suggests using a mallet. if you read it it says use a block of wood with a mallet."

The manual (page 12) which you can download from their site states:

Pull the Feed Knob counterclockwise and force the Chuck against the Table until the Spindle Shaft is secure.

To UNINSTALL the chuck it states to use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the "Wedge Drift Key". You NEVER strike a precisionly machined chuck!

  • @jjenson2006

funny cuz I have a similar model and thats exactly what is saying there. To use a block of wood with a mallet. to lightly tap it into place taking care not to damage anything.

  • @jjenson2006 yet can you admit when your wrong? of course you can right! just not right now..cuz youre not wrong. hahahahahaha i love children on youtube :-) i'll play your games

  • @steveman223

If people heeded my warnings, read the manual, didn't show people how to disable safety devices (which were designed after many people lost eyes), didn't get offended by someone giving them practical advice and didn't make stuff up to "make a point", there would be less accidents, less out of round spindles and less uninformed people who rely on other peoples videos to learn how to set things up!

  • @jjenson2006 what do you do for work again? lost eyes? do you suggest not wearing eye protection cuz he has the safety key? haha ...i mean come on..where do you work? lol lets go by the rules at my work. he should be wearing double eye protection. no gloves. hearing protection...double hearing depending on the material he is working with. oh...i almost forgot. none of our chuck keys have safety DEVICES on them. And i dont know anywhere else that has stronger safety rules than my work.

  • @steveman223

Where did I suggest not wearing eye protection? If you have the protection, it's a good idea to use it. If not you'll just have to wing it.

If you have eye protection and you decide not to use it because you feel the glasses are too heavy for your little nose to support them I would offer my constructive criticism; even if a whiny liberal complains.

Having a chuck key without a safety mechanism is one thing, disabling the mechanism on one you own is another.

  • @jjenson2006 wing it? did you just say wing it?!@?! while using a drill press? you must me retarded. thats not something you want to wing kiddo.

there you go with the liberal thing again. bringing politics in why? what have you done for your country besides bitch and moan? talk to me when you have done something with yourself.

so if i buy a drill press with a safety chuck key and then buy a drill press with a normal chuck key whats the difference? the danger is still the same is it not?

  • @steveman223 "wing it? did you just say wing it?!@?!" Well, all you have to do is reread my post if you weren't sure. "while using a drill press? you must" Well, you should. but if you misplace it and need to drill, what choice do you have? "me retarded." If you say so. LOL "thats not something you want to wing kiddo." Like I said, it's your own choice. kiddo? LOL "there you go with the liberal thing again. bringing politics in why?" Liberalism is your personality.
  • @steveman223 "what have you done for your country besides bitch and moan?"

What am I bitching or moaning about?

"talk to me when you have done something with yourself."

    I do stuff every day.

"so if i buy a drill press with a safety chuck key and then buy a drill press with a normal chuck key whats the difference?"

    The difference between what?

"the danger is still the same is it not?"

Using the chuck key with the saftey spring, you will never accidentally leave the chuck key in.

  • @jjenson2006 ok you are trailing and dont even know what you are talking about. looks like the kid is running out of words. too bad. it was fun :-)

  • @jjenson2006 so its ok to take the risk in only certain areas? a chuck key is pretty minor...well ..really minor. not wearing safety glasses is fairly big. have you ever had an eye injury? would you be willing to wager an eye just to "wing it"? i mean come on..lol lets say the kid lost it and had to buy a new key and this one came without a spring. is he wrong?

  • @steveman223 "a chuck key is pretty minor not wearing safety glasses is fairly big. have you ever had an eye injury?"

I could show you serious hand injuries from leaving a chuck key in a chuck; especially, when using a lathe.

"would you be willing to wager an eye just to "wing it"?"

That can be said about anything. Would you wager a leg to go skiing?

"came without a spring. is he wrong?"

No, but if it did and he went out of his way to disable it, it would be kind of dumb.

  • @steveman223 One last question that I'm just itching to ask. If you got in your car to drive to work and you found your seatbelt was broken would you:

    a) Call your boss and tell him you can't make it in because your car is unsafe.

    b) Bother one of your friends or family to drive you.

    c) Wing it (drive in and fix it when convienient).

    d) Other, explain_______

  • @jjenson2006 I hope you explain to me the comparison before I call you an idiot. given where I live...lets see...its a $124 ticket getting caught not wearing a seatbelt. a seatbelt in a 2000LB moving metal object is different then a chuck key with a spring. Id definitely call my boss ..i have plenty of leave to burn :-) so in that case why would you wing using a drill press without eye protection? that eye protection is more important than that little spring. what do you do for work again?

  • @steveman223

When drilling something without eye protection, there's a small chance some material might fly up into your eyes. If it does fly up into your eye, there's a small chance that it might permanantly damage it. Contrast that to a seatbelt. There's a small chance that someone will go through a light when you cross an intersection. If you're not wearing your belt, there is a small chance of going through the windshield.

One you lose an eye, the other you die..I guess you're right.

  • @steveman223 "a seatbelt in a 2000LB moving metal object is different then a chuck key with a spring."

Who was comparing a seatbelt to a spring? I was comparing a seatbelt in a car to eye protection on a drill press. I explained this earlier when you made a big deal about winging it when eye protection wasn't available.

  • @steveman223 "Id definitely call my boss ..i have plenty of leave to burn :-)"

What if you didn't have leave? Would you tell him you refuse to come in because your car is unsafe to drive without a properly operating seat belt? Would you have the car towed to a repair shop if you couldn't fix it yourself?

  • @steveman223 "why would you wing using a drill press without eye protection?"

If I couldn't find my safety glasses and I really needed to drill a hole, I would take a chance. There are plenty of people including my father that have worked their entire life without using many of the protective devices there are on machinery and have never gotten hurt. I say use it if you have it and if you do have it, don't disable it. Protective devices are safety advancements, disabling them is backwards.

  • @steveman223 "its a $124 ticket getting caught not wearing a seatbelt."

...and why do you change the subject with the seatbelt law? It has no context here. Let's say there was no (liberal) seatbelt law and that you had no sick leave, or vacation, or anything for that matter. Would you actually have the balls to tell your boss that you won't come in because of the broken seatbelt? I think anyone doing that would be fired because the boss would think you're taking him for a fool. I know I would

  • Heya Steve I'm a Harbor Freight nut too! I just bought this same drill press today. It's on sale all weekend for $49.99, but be sure to use Harbor Freight's 20% off coupon and you can get it for around $40 plus tax.

  • Nice review video. I have their 16 speed floor drill press. Works great for the money. I would recommend a drill press vise. Remember to wear eye protection when drilling...those chips fly!

  • thanks and im lookin to by a vise for it and i would like it to be an X and Y axis vise for precision!

  • HF sells nice mill-type vises. Not sure how "precise" they are, but I'm sure plenty for anything you'll try to "mill" on a drill press. Make a video if you buy a vise.

  • @mjmerie

HF does not sell any cross slide vise small enough to fit on their 8" bench drill press.

  • Did you order the drill press or go to harbor freight store?

  • i picked it up from the store

  • the belt might have to break in

  • i think so too

  • If you wanna change the speed and the belt is tight just pull the belt upward while turning the pulley and it will come off. Just like how a bike derailleur works...
