If a tsunami hits, how does anyone nessesarily die? Unless your at the beach where it hits, (and decide not to run), how is anyone really going to die?
If the tsunami goes past the beach line (which it usually does after the first wave), it picks up debris, it also starts pulling back with an undertow plenty strong enough to knock you off your feet. Debris and speed of water make it difficult to stand back up (as you're being hit by heavy objects in the water and crushed between them), and you tend to drown really easily.

We were staying there as well, and heard you guys were on the bus when the earthquake hit. I guess the tsunami took you by surprise. We felt the earthquake, but there was no tsunami at Tanu.

It was the remains of the tsunami that hit the south-eastern coast of Upolu Island. This was Savaii Island .. on the other side of Samoa.
