My belief is that we should treat others with kindness. ...even those whose beliefs are easily seen to be inane. My belief is that we should maintain that kindness until at some point that we see that those people are trying to take hostages to their obviously wrong system of belief (and typically domination).
I don't understand how (if - in fact - it does do so) showing any person that any belief he or she has is wrong does in any way amount either to not respecting , respecting, or even to disrespecting that belief (ITSELF).
I also don't understand in what way any belief (ITSELF) might either be respected or disrespected (as distinguished from in what way any PERSON or more who has that belief might either be respected or disrespected).
What exactly - if anything - does it mean either to respect or to disrespect any belief?
So what youre saying is that we should all shut the fuck up and keep are beliefs to ourselves... i will say that believeing in something and respecting are definatly different...
I agree that no belief should categorically be immune from criticism, but surely there are times when it is inappropriate to criticize a belief (talking to religious people at a religious funeral, etc.)
Thanks a lot for the video and the blog, Bitbutter. I've incorporated it into a writing prompt for a philosophy class of mine.
You should respect both others and their opinions unless they are irrational, dangerous and evil.
Tolerance is something that we should all learn. This however does not mean that you should not argue your case and present your views and firmly but politely explain the difference and reasoning behind it which you tend to use well. However beware of the jumps in logic and don't concoct the answer based on the question that is asked, analyze the subject and ask all the analytical questions.
I have always stated that "I respect your opinion..." when quite realistically - I never did - it was just an easy way out of a debate for someone not intelligent to open their mind to debate and analysis. You've put on paper what is so obvious - and never again will I tell someone that I respect their beliefs... for doing so - when their beliefs compared to my own are a contradiction - is nothing but a lie - and the belief system and world we know have been diseased by just that.

I still reckon you couldn't of put it more succinctly BB...
Regardless of their beliefs, why is it that so many don't subscribe?
Fear, pride, laziness?

Well said. Respect the person, but subject the belief to the harshest forms of criticism.

It's only relatively recently that i really became aware of this myself too. So obvious once you stop to consider it for a moment.
