i have taught this method to children for the last 31 years and they just love it. Unfortunately my fellow teachers seem afaid to get involved even after attending workshops that I do witrh them which they evaluate at a 5 (1-5) and five being high.
My kids just started a class that teaches this method and after just half of the first class I saw a difference! Even my 1st grader with special needs picked it up so quickly, he came home and did his homework alone for the first time! They both asked "why don't they teach this in school, it's so much easier".
Incredible. As a child I often devised my own systems for dealing with mathematics not unlike this and the vedic maths systems in general, but my teacher would criticise me despite getting it right. It's so sad that anything other than standardised western maths practices should be condemned - especially when it clearly works!
I used this method as a child and am teaching it to my daughter. netgnosis(dot)org(dot)uk(fwdslash)netgnosis. I am putting together a free programme for teaching chisenbop to your kids. Its graded like a martial art so kids earn their white belt and progress up to black belt.Great vid by the way.
you can figure it out if you watch close enough...on the right hand(ones place) the thumb is five. On the left hand(tens place) the thumb is 5 tens or fifty. I picked it up and taught it to my youth and they grasped it fairly quickly. You can also carry during addition and borrow or cancel during subtraction using this method as well.. It is very cool!!!!
You're videos were by far my favorite while researching for my new iPad app "Finger Math" - these are the CUTEST kids! So smart! thank you!!!

This is totally meaningless if you don't explain what the child is doing. He might have memorised the answers for all we know.

There's a book on how to do it. You can also ask your teacher.
