  • I don't think it's fair to compare this duel to any in the prequel trilogy. First of all, it's two completely different choreographers (Bob Anderson and Nick Gillard) and secondly, this duel was intended to be more like a 'classical' duel between two Medival Knights/Samuri, whereas the prequel trilogy fights (along with most other fights in Movies nowadays) was ment to be more flashy and action-packed.

  • Well Ben wasn't suppose to duel Vader again since Revenge of the Sith, but create a diversion so Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie and the Droids could escape the Death Star. He was a decoy plus Vader and Obi-Wan aged progressively over 30 years after the events of Episode III. That's why logically the lightsaber duels are slower in the Classics. Also plus because evil takes over the galaxy from the Sith... technology has worn down.

  • @KyleKatarn789 Have you ever played Jedi knight dark forces 2? I love that game!

  • Vader's lightsaber had no flare edges and looks more like a glow stick then a lightsaber.

  • This kinda pathatic if you compare it to the fight in episode 3. It's not about the visual effects but the choreography. On the other hand... the fights are probably the only good thing about the new episodes, so they had to be good xD

  • @ihr0ppa

The fights in the new episodes are visually impressive, but completely boring.

Lots of shiny lights flashing across the screen, but the choreography seems artificial and the duels drag on for minutes and don't convey any emotions.

  • @Molo9000

Well, I guess it's a matter of opinion. I like the action packed, emotionless 10 minute flights and think that the old fights were boring... you think the opposite.

  • lol 1:40 obi's all like yeah suck it vader

  • Awesome

  • Where did Obi Wan go!!! Ahhh he disappeared!!!

  • @iAlwaysKnowIt he became one one with the force!

  • wowchers..so dramatic...

  • At 1:26, Obi: You Will Di- Oh Crap Man, Hang On, My Batteries Died.

  • He disapeared

  • Oh no..... Obi come back! We love your beard!

  • How come obi wans lightsaber is blue at 1:29... Lo

  • i was watching this yesterday!!!

  • I'm so happy Christina favorited this video. I'm in love.

  • Between 1:26 and 1:28 Obi won has no light on his sabre

  • Thumbs up If Christina Grimmie brought you here~

  • What movie is this? Looks pretty sweet

  • @killzone10 It's in the title of the video...

  • I acutally dont know why so many people can like this these. It is so emotionless, it is so slow and the moves are so bad....no, not good. Overhyped, truely

  • @wg15music Do you know when this was made? Do you kno- you know what? Never mind, I can never get through to people like you with normal logic.

  • To some extent this is the most realistic of all the lightsaber battles as it reflects something much closer to what real sword fighting looks like today. In that way, a film buff would find it very enjoyable. However, to insult the work and choreography of the later fights with all its flipping and grandiose is really an insult to the world which Lucas made. In lore, this was a battle between a very old man who specialized in defensive swordplay and a machine. Lucas still was prowd of this film

  • And Team Grimmie Arrives!

  • an old man vs a hybrid man/robot, this fight was an epic fail, at 00:36 obi wan does a pathetic turn around "trick" if u could call it that?!

  • 1:27 Epic fail..

  • sho old.

  • team grimmie

  • Christina grimmie brought me here SNSD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MrLevicrz No one cares.

  • @RayWlllaimJohnson Poser And 62 people care bitch *blocked*

  • pathetic, completely pathetic

  • they should redo this fight scene; it's the worst in the series. Obi Wan's spin at 0:34 is pathetic...

  • I still think,no matter how old or slow they are, the impact at 1:00 still carries some weight behind it like it did when it was first released. just a cool thing, idk

  • 0:36 i laughed so hard when obi-wan made that turn lol

  • 1:28 - 1:29 light saber turns into grey stick

  • George should've revamped the rematch between Ben Vs Vader

  • after watching the prequels it looks kinda strange when obi-wan calls him "darth" and not "anakin".

  • The light Saber fight there is pretty good. It looks pretty much like fencing except they use two hands with the light saber. When considering the spot that they were in I would not expect what we seen in new trilogy. Plus for the news ones they had the actors trained differently than the ones in the original trilogy for the light saber fights.

  • The reason I find the original trilogy so much better then the new ones is that they didn't NEED special effects because of the brilliant characters the much deeper story line.

  • 1:47

vader; thats for cutting my limbs off beeeyotch

  • Who the hell cares that they are slow? They're missing the point...Star Wars is much more than the action. Just listen to the incredible exchange of words these two wise men partake in. When you focus only on the action, you miss an entire mine filled with philosophical gold

  • Guys, their moving slow because they're old! Vader's in his 40's and he's a cyborg, and obi wan must be somewhere in his 60's.

  • 'If you strike me down I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.' My favourite Star Wars line, and it applies to anything. Better to attempt and fail, then you'll learn how to succeed. The worst thing you can do with anything, girls, work, sport, any endeavour, is not give it a go, then you'll never know or learn.

  • i thought it was interesting to watch some kid do backflips everywhere :S

  • Lol go read a book on film making kid

  • No episode 3 was not good no character development or story just CGI shit

  • @thealienking0007mgs

    YOU ARE FUCKING IDIOTIC!

  • Ben is an asshole.

  • My powers are weak Darth? Orly? Why the hell you breathin so fast @ 1:30 and up lol!

  • I always love the frame drop just before obi wan turns on his lightsaber and then he just turns his hand out to make it look like the already extended stick is coming out of the handel

  • @stormzyz1998 well vader is only in his 40s but he's robotic. and the reason obi wan is moving so slow is because he's fighting in the original jedi way (defensively) so he's not trying to kill him he's just trying to defended himself until luke gets there so he can create unconditional hate for vader in luke so that he won't be swayed by the dark side. That's what you get from growing up with these movies and taking them a little to seriously as a 10 year old (6 years ago) lol

  • It's kind of obvious they're slow because they're OLD. Did you guys not see that? It's not like they are young anymore.

  • I'll always love this fight. It looks like two men testing each others limits, finding openings, both wary of the fact that they're holding friggin laser swords, as opposed to the ridiculous kinetic battles of the sequels where every participant was more likely to chop off their own limbs than those of their enemies.

  • If you strike me down I shall become more powerful that you can possibly imagine

  • fail lightsaber 1:27

  • you didn't leave him he chopped your legs off and left you

  • @satmtca Well, technically he did renounce the Jedi Order and become a Sith Lord before that, so...

  • The fight is actually about something emotional and storywise

Was there any point to any of the fights in the prequels? Other then Lucas showcasing his latest computers

  • @Tacom4ster

In Episode 3 - the fight between Obi Wan and Anakin was pretty emotional. And several others.

  • @Tacom4ster Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Maul - Yes

    Anakin vs Dooku - Yes

    Yoda vs Palpatine - Yes

    Anakin vs Obi-Wan - Yes

  • Far more fun to watch than the 10 minute long inconsistent light show in Episode III. So many great lines and emotions delivered here and none in the other one at all.

This is the first lightsaber fight in the history of our galaxy. Never try to disrespect it.

Btw, Luke's reaction and the "No!" right after the video ends is easily the most genuine out of all of them. Very heartfelt.

  • When you watch this film after episode III, there is a much different feeling with this so called, "simple fight"

  • NO!

  • Man even though this obi wan is old he still got mad skills

  • Lol i dont think its up for debate that this fight is slow. and not very action packed. Thats obvious. At the time it was, but it isent anymore. But you have to respect it because it was basiclly the first of its kind. Its like comparing super mario brothers to skyrim. As for as game content is concerned, skyrim wins.. but you have to realize that Mario brothers was a ground breaking game..

  • To quote the video about the originals vs the prequels:

"Did you SEE the lightsaber battles in the originals? Fwoom, fwoom.... fwoom. BOOORING!"

But really though, this was some old school shit. Epic.

  • @kman618 Yeah, that poor geeky little turd can't get his jollies unless everything is super fast with loud music and there are lots of flashing lights regardless of whether or not the story is even any good. Even the lightsaber fights in V and VI are much longer and even more fast paced than this one and are far more interesting to watch than any in the prequels.

  • 1:45

Darth Vader: Hey Obi-Wan remember that time on Coruscant that you thought I was gonna be the death of you.

Obi-Wan: Yes I decided to believe you that you weren't gonna be the death of me.

    Darth Vader: Well guess what?

    Obi-Wan: What?

    Darth Vader: Its True!=3

    *Vader kills Obi-Wan*

  • He die?

  • I don't know if you kids can get your minds around this, but when I was young this scene was literally the coolest thing I ever saw, ever. We played lightsabers for WEEKS after watching this. This scene captured the imagination of millions, and set the stage for decades of science fiction action.

So kiddos...this scene is where it all started. Show some respect.

  • Half of the fight sequences in the new ones look like some fucking video game. But the real problem isn't that, it is that the characters (in the prequels) are shit. If that wasn't the case, then sure, we could all probably acknowledge the more adapt, more expensive choreography or whatever. although it would still have to be tasteful, which it is not

  • @rickheideinger To make matters worse, George explains this fight away by claiming that "it's an old man against a man who's half machine so it's not much of a sword fight at all" which is actually very disrespectful toward Alec Guinness' and David Prowse's performance. Lucas would have LOVED for the two of them to be flipping around swinging like crazy in this fight but he couldn't do it in 1977. Lucky us.

  • @RevengeOfTheKaizer The slow pace can be attributed to two swordmasters who are at the top of their game and respecting each other's prowess.

  • @Wargoat6 Unfortunately that's not what George says, and what he says automatically becomes "canon".

  • @RevengeOfTheKaizer No, just no, no it does't Never give Lucas creative control or everything he touches turns to shit. Lucas wanted Solo to have a be an alien and C3 to be a cockney robot

  • @Allnamestakenzomg Yeah, and if they had ended up that way in the movie we'd have no choice but to accept them. Granted it probably would have ruined the film, but he ultimately decided on what we ended up with.

  • @RevengeOfTheKaizer i think it kinda make sense though. i wouldnt expect them to be as athletic as their younger self. besides, darth vader with his robotic suit and cape jumping around like yoda would look ridiculous

  • @philanderadriaan Yoda jumping and flipping around with a lightsaber already looks ridiculous. That's the whole point, lightsaber battles in general don't need to be much more complex or longer than this one or the two between Luke and Vader. Less is more, in this case.

  • @RevengeOfTheKaizer but yoda won't be able to cut ppl in half if he wasn't as athletic as he was

  • @philanderadriaan Yoda really shouldn't need a lightsaber. Before the prequels it always felt like he was too powerful to even need one. Same with Palpatine, for that matter.

  • @RevengeOfTheKaizer but sometimes it is obvious that a contest cannot be decided by the knowledge of the force but by the skills with a lightsaber

  • @philanderadriaan Lol, only one who is inferior at using the Force would say that. :P

  • @RevengeOfTheKaizer thats exactly what dooku said to yoda

  • @philanderadriaan That's who I was referring to. :P

  • @RevengeOfTheKaizer why lucky for us?

  • And in the newer movies, half the time you can't even see what's going on.

  • The duels in the original trilogy are better simply because they get straight to the point and you can feel that every move counts.

  • lamest fight in the universe...

  • @ershel lamest comment in the universe

  • @ershel and I assume you think Hayden Christiensen is a good actor...

  • Looks like 2 old geezers fighting with their canes.

  • @jshrubz what do you expect kids fighting? lol

  • Compare their lightsaber battles. Episodes 1,2,3 were more action. I love show star wars started from 4,5,6. then to 1,2,3 :D

  • The fight in ROTS was more emotional than this one and has 1:35 been sped up? I swear it wasn't this fast when I watched ANH..

  • Shut the fuck up with the "emotion" and the "they were good for their time" and especially the plain old "I like the sequel trilogy lightsaber battles better" sure everyone if entitled to their opinion but so am I, the old battles compared to the new are shit, and to be honest as much as I love SW the movies could have been made soooo much better, every single one of them, kudos to George for coming up with the idea but Christ the man should know he should not be the one making the damn movies/

  • @DixonJZT Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, which means I can give you a thumbs down for thinking your opinion is bullshit. That's my opinion right there, you action-addicted, disrespectful prick.

  • 1:28 fail

  • ah the wonders of the lightsaber back when it could make peoples bodies vanish completely just from a touch :P

  • Funniest thing is that Darth Vader sounds nothing like Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker/Darth vader).

  • people can hate as much as they like on the sequels, but their lightsaber battles were so much better that is all.

  • @mrdannyc1 i actually complete disagree i liked the sequels/prequels i grew up with those more then the originals but the emotion i feel watching this compared to obi wan and anakin in esp 3 is not even comparable

  • @Omalley1018 fair enough:) emotion, i suppose, but i personally would rather see an action packed mental lightsaber battle, rather than a slow emotional one.. if george ever made remakes of the old ones however, please someone shoot him

  • @mrdannyc1 Better, as in needlessly/unrealistically longer and flashier? For sure. Just like most of the fight scenes. Lucas used action scenes as a crutch to distract people from his inexplicably awful cinematography, dialogue, and characterization.

  • Epic Battle!! Look at them go!! Woohh!! Fast as the wind baby

  • @magnum1165 that was originally the case in the old republic, but that was done away with between episode 1 and 2.

  • can any star war fan tell me the difference between the blue & green light saber? I was told that if you have a blue one your a Jedi knight but if you have a green one your a Jedi master is this true?

  • @magnum1165 i didn't know that you can judge from the colour of the lightsaber, but if that is the case, what is Mace Windu then ? :)))

  • @infested9846 Mace is in a class of his own, BAMF :)

  • @magnum1165 No, it has nothing to do with rank, green represents; Life, enthusiasm, and learning. Blue represents strength, security, and stability.

  • @magnum1165 depends on where you look. in the original trilogy it was just going to be blue and red, but they changed lukes lightsaber to green in return of the jedi cus blue blended in against the sky in the tatooine fight scene. in some video games/books it represents rank of jedi and in some comics the colour changes depending on who activates the blade (this ones been long forgotten tho). it just depends on where you look

  • A New Hope is much better than Batman Begins is

  • Nooooo

  • Probably the most epic, and at same time lamest, light saber fight of them all!

  • Is this the original audio? It sounds like it.

  • all the star wars fights are great and i love star wars but for some reason i never quite liked this fight, its way to lame

  • Lamest lightsaber fight ever!

  • WHY DID OBI ONE LET HIM SELF BE KILLED ? THATS ONE THING IM STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT ?

  • @619badazz13 It's one of the biggest mindfucks in film history. Vader is left standing there like "...the robe is...empty."

  • @TKDLION im thinking he did that so luke can be the one to take over , since hes younger

  • @619badazz13 He didn't have to die for Luke to take over but I guess he couldn't kill Darth Vader because Luke had to confront him still. Actually, I have a new theory about why he stood there and let Vader kill him. He was concentrating/meditating so he could be one with the force and could return in spirit right away.

  • @TKDLION idk tell me if this sounds rgt , he did it because luke is the only one that can bring back vader to the light side , idk

  • You can tell they filmed this movie before they developed a more thorough idea of lightsaber battling. I would say that this was just as fast as they dueled back then, but even Luke's battles with Vader in episodes 5 and 6 were more intense than this.

  • "So Obi-Wan, We meet again. What part of 'Stay 50 Yards Away at All Times' Don't You Understand?" -Stewie/Vader.

  • What I love about this film unlike almost any other Star Wars film in the saga is that the lightsaber duel has nothing to do with the climax, which means that this film has more to offer than a duel between to very interesting characters

  • looks like they haven't stretched for a while

  • @philanderadriaan Yeah, kinda does. I have to say that Count Dooku puts Obi Wan to shame.

  • the old star wars movies suck ass compared to the new ones. anyone that says other wise is stuck in the 70's it may have been good during those times but watching it now it really looks crappy it looks like there fencing lmaoooo on guard

  • @basedking na eps 1 and 2 were kind of gay , except the yoda vs dooko

  • @basedking That doesn't look anything like fencing. You are stupid if you think that it does and even more stupid if you think that the prequels are superior.

  • haha i like the comments that they look like two old men swinging canes AHHAHA they pretty much were at this point in there lives haha u cant expect Anakin to move like he did when he was young ahah same for Obi-wan ahah n thats why this scene is amazing to watch knowing everything theyve gone through lol could of been more exciting tho...maybe a nurse to help em out =P

  • @Mike4UFC

Erm anakin cant fight when he was young? you do know he is only 42 here....

besides that he is the chosen one..

and dooku was more then twice his age in ep 2-3 and kicked some ass, hell even qui gonn jinn was 60 in ep1 and kicked mauls ass for some time

  • YES!!! After so much work I finally catched the plastic sword in 1:25. Not the famous spot where you can clearly see it, but a bit before. The sword is suddenly black(plastic) and the surrounding color is white. It lasts for about half a second. Very hard to catch.

  • @DarthRushy Makes Obi-Wan's sword look like a darksaber in 1:25

  • Comment removed

  • Star Wars is much better than The Dark Knight is

  • so I came here because I read that two times during this scene Obi Wan and Vader can be seen holding their lightsabers with the colors switched, but I'm not seeing it. there are a couple times during close-ups where the angles the lightsabers are crossing is a bit confusing but I can't see them explicitly showing one holding the opposite color lightsaber. can anyone see it and point it out for me?

  • @gir2525 You were misinformed. Such is the risk of the Internet.

  • its kind of jarring to watch this and then watch their duel in revenge of the sith. in that one theyre both awesome, and in this one, theyre either weak or just playing around

  • this is from the limided edition. This is the 19977 version

  • I look at the comments and I see essays being written. Can we just sit here and watch one of the most memorable scenes is Star Wars.

  • @multiblade77 bcos Lucas cudn't think of anything useful 4 him 2 do in the thrid act

  • this fight was awsome b4 ep III, now tho its even bttr. I love how the Stormtroopers r just watching like "shud we like do anything"

"nah with our aim we'd probly hit our guy"

  • Here's the thing most of the people don't get, to simplify what Redlettermedia's review said: "Lightsaber duels are more complex then two guys swinging lightsabers at each other. It's not about the duel itself, or how flashy the moves are. It's an internal conflict." Here this is displayed perfectly. These two have not seen each other in years. This was more than just a lightsaber fight, this was an internal conflict in two people.

  • @shade881993 Really? I remember when this came out in 77 up until the prequals it was never mentioned about any 'internal conflict', it was just two old enemies fighting - all fans cared about was how the effects were done. Fuck that hack RedLetterMedia. He played you fanboy's like the blind fool's you are - and your still swallowing it! hahaha!!

  • @luis6079

    also, a few things:

Ive felt this way about the prequels long before harry plinkitt, he just pretty much confirms what i was thinking.

    regarding special effects:

    1. CGI special effects aren't impressive. A fat nerd in his mom's basement can make those. Lucas had to do some amazing thigns in the OT to pull off the spex scences. Now he pl ays with his computer. /yawn

    2. In the words of george lucas, "a special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing."

  • @luis6079 Well first off, I will say that I am not a "fanboy", more like a fan... Second of all, I will use a quote that Obi Wan says in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, (The worse of the original films...) "From a certain point of view." So we all have different opinion of Star Wars, but whether you like the movie, or not, I think we can all agree that Star Wars is pretty awesome.

  • Darth Vader 50 Obi Wan 75 years old and still fighting!

  • Actaully idiot Vader was only 43 here and Obi wan was 57 so they weren’t that old count dooku was about 82 when he fought both anakin and obi wan in episode lll and was way faster.

  • @charlieiscool1000 yeah but he had the darkside on his, er, side, unlike Obi Wan and Vader was crippled so it balances out

  • obi wan let his self die he was not trying

  • @jeffhardyrofftops

He saw the stormtroopers closing in - he was going to get shot anyway.

He decided to do his disappearing act.

  • @jazzx251 yeah but he is a jedi master and plus luke and every one was their

  • My god looking at the fanboy comments are ridiculous. Seeing stuff like

"The original Star Wars films were the best and the real deal..the prequels are the worst movies ever"

Fuck off. All Star Wars movies are awesome. These Prequels were probably planned during 4,5 & 6 were coming out. Man people can be stupid...

  • @xanderdude123 well the animated clone wars film wasn't that gr8. mind u if u just watch it as the pilot ep of the Tv series its ok

  • @xanderdude123 They were planned by Lucas during the development of the originals, yes. That doesn't mean they're good, though. I suggest watch RedLetterMedia's reviews of the prequels, then you'll understand why those films killed the franchise.

  • @AlmightyHiggey Fuck RedLetterMedia - he played you fanboys like a harp from hell! He got his 15minutes of fame by doing the obvious and overtly nitpicking based on all the butthurt fanboys bitching. Then he lost his cred when he tried that same crap on movies like Star Trek's First Contact among others and fail miserably. The Prequals didn't "kill" the franchise - bitch, whine, complain all you want - they will be around and adored long after you and I are gone.

  • @luis6079 Hitler was adored was by millions, was he good? Admiration does not mean greatness.

  • @xanderdude123

You clearly don't understand good film.

Compare camera work in the two trilogies. George Lucas should never direct again, when someone else had their say, the movies were brilliant. When Lucas controlled everything, the camera work was amature shot/reverse shot and the blocking was boring und unrealist.c

  • @TheDeistAngle Hmm. I have been a fan of Star Wars since I was 10 in 1977. Until the prequals came out - never, not once! Was the OT Star Wars known for either it's camera work (which is quite static during the non-spex scenes) or it's 'story arc and acting' (if anything, the story was always compared to other movies in which it was lifted) - all press and word of mouth was effects, effects, effects. Now, it is all reveresed and two-faced. This prequal hating nonsense is really getting old.

  • @luis6079

It broke new ground in special effects scenes, but there was still something of substance there.

I'll agree that the special effects were what made it stick in the minds of people, but that was because the other necissary elements of a movie were there.

if you block everything shot-reverse shot, make the dialouge boring and dry, and have absoluktley no substance or conflict in your characters other than the type a 5 year old would envision, well the special effects really don't matter

  • @xanderdude123 Yes they were planned, but they weren't planned to be filled with shitty acting, terrible dialogue, plot holes, aimed at kids and too much CGI because no one would question Lucas when he was creating the prequels. I mean really would you?

  • @xanderdude123 no, the prequels fucking sucked, especially attack of the clones.

  • @NottinghamForest22 The acting and writing weren't very good, and betray the spirit of the original trilogy, but the prequels are still enjoyable if you think of them as Michael Bay mindless action flick type movies. Attack of the Clones definitely had the worst acting, but at least there was a purpose to the overall plot (starting the Clone Wars to give Palpatine an army), unlike Phantom Menace which only existed to introduce a bunch of characters that didn't get used in the following films.

  • @xanderdude123 no the prequels were not planned during episodes 4-6, George Lucas wanted more money so he mindlessly made the prequels which make a lick of sense and don't match up with the original trilogy, only the die hard clueless Star Wars fanboys would say episodes 1-3 where good. They were utter trash and an insult to the classic trilogy.

  • @xanderdude123 Thanks for not joining the masses. You're too cool for prequel hate school.

  • @xanderdude123 The original Star Wars movies were titles 'Episode V' et al to invoke memories of movie serials. It wasn't at the time a serious attempt to create a 6 part saga. Lucas just followed that structure to allude to the possibility of a larger universe which ultimately did not need to be elaborated upon. 'The Phantom Menace' wasn't premeditated, at least not when the first two films were created

And the prequel films are quite bad.

  • @xanderdude123 ...

Planned? That's UTTERLY false from the get-go. The original movie, "Star Wars," was meant to be a standalone movie. Hence the very tightly fit ending to the movie, but then Fox wanted him to make it a trilogy, so he hired people more talented and dedicated than him to direct the movies.

    Like "Empire Strikes Back."

Then he directs all the prequels and...eh.

    They're not good.

Really, judging them as MOVIES, they aren't good.
