Can my guess be the temperature of the air changing due to the wet chips cause the pitch of the sound to momentarily change? ....very much a guess.

When we quench really hot steel in water, there is a moment when the steam forms in very small bubbles which can make the part being cooled actually vibrate. Could this be a RAPID release of steam?
