  • My band used to have a song in A major. For some reason I played F# Pentatonic combined with F# Aeolian. Do this day it is the best solo I've ever recorded, but I never understood what the theory was behind it, or why it worked. I wonder if I could have slipped in the Dorian mode somewhere as well?

  • Very cool teaching!

  • Pearl Jam FTW!

  • nice guy, but talks too much.

  • nice lesson but a sucky solo

  • @erniewonderkind no, f#maj is not relative to the key of E. Because E is not it the F#maj Scale. F# G# Bb B C# Eb F is The F# Ionian Scale. No E in there.

  • So basically, playing any major scale pattern that has the second note as the root note would be "dorian mode?". Say, playing B over C? etc.?

  • that solo was just terrible...

  • Great lesson for the average guitar player! Very straight forward-- thanks!

  • you should totally use a looper pedal during ur lessons this would help u give examples quickly :-) awsum vid man!!

  • Maynard's Dick!

  • If David Brent made guitar tuitional videos this would be it! Comedy genius!

  • Best Stratocaster pickup: neck pickup!!!

  • in the chord progression you made for this video, what key is it in?? and is there an easy way to figure out which key someone is playing in??

  • i think both videos are great ! except the jam thing ... you could use a simple chordprogression like 2 bars em and 2 bars A7. sorry for bad english.

  • Pearl Jam, Alive chorus ;-)

  • I love your lessons man but I think it's kinda like death by explanation, play a lil more and use more examples to keep the lessons fresh, just some advice mate, I do love your channel :) rock on! \m/

  • Rockin' is nerver been this easy! followin' your vidz guys! even in Philippines you really ROCK! Keep up guys!

  • all your doing is playing the blues scale

  • @mikesmusic1988

Yes, but he ads the major sixt. What makes it, dorian pentatonic blues i guess.

  • I really like his teaching style. He makes a lot of sense. I can't figure out how to get that 3-day site trial though- do I just sign up on the website or do I need to make a special request or something?

  • i only started to learn when you said"i cant pleae D major of a E minor progerssion!" "sure you can" got it! thanks

  • he talked about emphasizing the correct notes..but in his demonstration, he's not..i mean, this guy knows his theory, but i don't think D Major/E Dorian was the correct choice for lead over that particular track..like he said, i would have jammed over it with Minor Pent.

  • Fantastic lesson!!!

    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

  • Really easy to understand that way. Thanks!

  • you talk too much, this lesson is 15 minutes long, and you dont demonstrate anything really until a couple of minutes from the end, do you know what you are doing ???????????????

  • if you listen to this chord progression,,,,,,,it means that you can BLAST Dorian all over the big break in Freebird and that would be a cool option,,,:-))))

  • i thought dorian mode gave the licks more of a santana sound! = /

  • @Skadoosh417

I could be wrong, but that might be the Phrygian mode. It supposedly has a Latin flavour to it.

    :-)

  • @Skadoosh417 thats because alot of funk and Latin music both use alot of Dorian scales.

  • Got to agree Guthrie, you know I'm trying to learn this shit properly but this unfortunately isn't a great sounding Dorian example.

  • I just played this in front of my pet monkey and he was so impressed he bent over and pissed in his own mouth...!

  • haha. I like the lesson

  • The solo doens't really highlight the Dorian sound sound that well - that's down to the progression as much as the actual solo... including some chords which highlight the major 6th tonality would have helped this methinks.... there's a lot of Emin pent going on and not much movement across the neck - everyone to their own, but I wouldn't say this is a great example of Dorian personally...

  • You're an awesome teacher!

  • "oooooh ooohh oooh, I'm still alive!" -PJ

  • good teacher, but in my opinion not that great of a player.

  • I would strongly disagree. I think hes a great player

  • sure man, It's you opinion

  • @carlitojonesius I don't think he's a great player at all. In fact, I get the impression that he's not even very musical but does this as a labour of love. What is important, though, is that he's a pretty good teacher (this lesson on the modes is great for its clarity and simplicity) and he's got a generous and giving spirit - after all, his lessons are free and that makes me a big fan.

  • @carlitojonesius being a good player doesnt mean he didnt show the dorian as best as someone trying to distringuish between emin pent and e dorian should have witnessed.

  • He is a good player I think

  • i respect your opinion man.

  • Actually I take it all back mate, I saw another video where I thought you sucked but actually you are fucking brilliant. Everything is very explained in this video, nice work.

  • ok im gettin it a lil better, but i still cant seem to make the tonality change

for example, im playing the chords you gave (E, G, D, A) but it still souds like im playing a D major scale, how exactly do i put the emphasis on the E to make it sound e dorian

  • use your minor chords cause Dorian is a minor tonality people get it mixed up for it being a major scale with a flat 3rd and flat7th but its a minor scale with a raised sixth from knowing this try using your minor chords and really express the notes in a minor chord then the Dorian is a perfect great sounding scale which is really great to use

  • @lilfisticuffs this video isnt exactly a great way to express the Dorian mode..my advice is to learn the mode shapes and play them over the key they are assigned to...THEN you can start mixing it up. If you don't know the modes as they are, it'll be confusing to try to do what this guy is doing

  • Maybe you are't not the great guitarist but you are the great teacher.

  • @majjurach rude

  • modes could still be explained way better.

it sucks how everyone just can't make it sound as easy as it really is, but good lesson man.

  • yeah this lesson is amazing . marty and next level are awsome . and they have mad alot of good guitat player good around the world right now just by there awsome lessons i wish i could meet these guys one day lol

  • The man! Thank you very much!

  • i don't even remember wat my commet was and it's not there. wtf did i say that everyone has such a prob with?

  • Cool, that was really useful, really adds more options to your rock soloing!

  • i don't understand whats 1,2,3,b3 blabla.. can somebody help me?

  • They are the intervals in the major scale. 1 = route... and each step you take in the scale is the next number...

Wether it is flat or sharp determines the type of scale or mode

  • awesome... lots of people post videos about what modes are and how they work... which is all good and well except they provide no explanation of how to APPLY them to your playing, which this video does... props

  • nice...pearl jam

  • That's the Boulevard of broken dreams-Wonderwall- kind of progression...

These lessons are really helpful thank you!

I have been playing classical and rock guitar for 5 years, and I never really got into improvising!

  • Great Info, He is a great teacher, but i noticed that when he was jamming he was combining the Pentatonic mode with Dorian but he was actually using more pentatonic than Dorian, thanks for the info though

    greets from Tijuana B.C. Mexico

  • Wow! That's really ground-breaking stuff for me, all that you said about "Dorin is just-- 'lower the major scale key by a whole step' and there you have it!"

    Thank you for that!

  • ..great solo men that's good!! rock on!!

yeah!!!now i undertand the role of modes tnx dude

  • i realy want to pkay in modes to realy spice up my playing and give it a more complex sound. i like playing bluesy hard rock and i want to get out of using the minor pentatonic with the b5. could you please give more examples of using it like that. I personaly dont like the sound of the solos you played but i know that musicaly they are great they just dont have the sound i like and i still dont know how to exactly apply dorian to get the sound i want

  • Personally, since he's playing in E Dorian, i'd think of E minor with a #6. In saying that I am in nooooo way taking away from how this guy puts it across. Very concise and easy to understand. Just makes more sense to ME to think of it as a minor scale rather than thinking in D Major.

  • I forgot the lesson that end solo was so good

  • well good tar

  • why dont you put up a video on how to play lead like you are at the end i think that would help averybody out alot

    -dav

  • Now that's a rockin' solo!

  • David, i'm sure you've had the experience where something that's been bothering you for a long time all of a sudden goes "click," and thereafter makes perfect sense. this video did that for me. thanks for being so generous.

  • bloody hell ! that Gibson tone...nice one !!

  • you know that is a fender strat right?

  • Sure do.check out FULL solo

  • nice, it just helps get your head round the whole thing, mixing scales together, etc. good stuff

  • This video would be really helpful for a beginner. I wish i woulda seen this! Would have made my pain a lot simpler hahaha

  • I watched both parts of this video and thought that all of the information was correct, well thought out and easily understandable. I was really looking forward to seeing/hearing the example solo. Unfortunately I found the video lacking here. The solo was weak and sporadic. Good information, bad solo.

  • agreed

  • ure lessons help me so much !

  • Simply put, 1-2-34-5-6-78 = Ionian

    2-34-5-6-78-1 = Dorian

and so on, remember that 1 4 5 are major

    2 3 5 and 6 are minor and 7 is diminished

    when applying to chords...

  • oops 2 3 and 6 are minor, 5 is always major

  • idiot asking for tabs of that

  • Seriously man. One of his MAIN POINTS was learn the notes and get away from shapes. If you want to use tabs this lesson is completely lost on you.

  • do a billy talent lesson

  • can u be in my band

  • It doesn't matter he's just making a point.

  • THIS KICKS ASS!!

Can you do videos for the other modes please? Exactly the same please?? :):)

  • Great lesson, and awesome playing at the end.

  • Like rockerjeremy said, i can hear Slash using this. Jimi Hendrix, too. Anyone else hear Jimi in this? Also, You said there's times you really don't want to use Dorian. I imagine it could sound flat or sloppy if you used it at the wrong time. When would be a bad time to use it?

  • dave or tim , whats the best route to go for a beginner to start recording . track recorders or computer software ?

  • Good job Dave, also NLG is a kickass website man.

  • could you make a sweep picking lesson? Im trying to learn and need some tips.

  • Dave, awesome!

Thanks so much for the lesson, buddy!

  • Nice man! I really want to get all the theory down, I dont know shit about intervals or major 7th chords or anything. Guess I should check out your website and perhaps buy a book ;)

  • that scale sounds almost similar to something Slash would use

  • nice man ur a kickass guitarist.

  • again dav, can you turn up the jam track....

  • lol he looks up at 5:49 - 5:52

he gave up a grin lol

  • david u fuckin rule so hard!! i love the dorian mode lesson it helped me a lot thnx!!!

  • hey david , ive been playing for like 6 months and ive watched alot of your videos, but im really stuck i duno what to learn next

is there any more complex chords to learn which are used quite alot , i duno what to do :(

love ur videos you have taught me all i know :D

  • If Ionian (major) consists of all whole steps, ie. ABCDE where do the flats, etc. come from in the modes. I thought the modes had different whole/half step intervals?

  • The major scale isn't all whole steps. B->C and E->F are half steps. The sharps and flats come in because of these

In C the scale starts with (whole, whole, half..)

    C -> D -> E -> F

    but in D would be

    D -> E -> F# -> G

    Hope that makes sense

  • yah like you see this and you try and you might get frustrated because you cant get this sound.... part of it is because to get speed you need to practice the scale over and over again with a metronome getting slightly faster each time... but also you have to understand the basic chord progession and notes of the guitar... for example A w B w C 1/2 D w E 1/2 D w F w G (w = whole step 1/2 = half step)

  • Your jam at the end sounds like "Alive" by Pearl Jam. AMAZING!

  • Nice man. Just picked a Jam man loop pedal and having a blast.

  • Thats a beautiful Les Paul, what finnish does it have? Great Jam, Rock on Dave

  • Is rhythm something that can be taught?? I have no natural rhythm...

  • yes it can.. get a metronome.

  • wow.. that was awesome..

I've been following ur lessons for more than 9months now but i've never seen anything like this before..

  • Was that a Gibson or an Epiphone Les Paul???Im sure it was a Gibson but just wondering.

  • In this lesson I play a Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Fender Mexican Stratocastar through a small practice amp LINE 6 Spider I

    rock on!

    David Taub

  • Awesome thanks...ROCK ON

  • @rockongoodpeople the progrtession that u use is E G D A. Could u tell me that on which scale that progression is formed?? Please and thanks for the lesson!

  • @rockongoodpeople the progrtession that u use is E G D A. Could u tell me that on which scale that progression is formed?? Please and thanks for the lesson!

  • wholy crap!!! I almost cried when you improvised it sounded so awesome!!!!!!
