My band used to have a song in A major. For some reason I played F# Pentatonic combined with F# Aeolian. Do this day it is the best solo I've ever recorded, but I never understood what the theory was behind it, or why it worked. I wonder if I could have slipped in the Dorian mode somewhere as well?
@erniewonderkind no, f#maj is not relative to the key of E. Because E is not it the F#maj Scale. F# G# Bb B C# Eb F is The F# Ionian Scale. No E in there.
I love your lessons man but I think it's kinda like death by explanation, play a lil more and use more examples to keep the lessons fresh, just some advice mate, I do love your channel :) rock on! \m/
I really like his teaching style. He makes a lot of sense. I can't figure out how to get that 3-day site trial though- do I just sign up on the website or do I need to make a special request or something?
he talked about emphasizing the correct notes..but in his demonstration, he's not..i mean, this guy knows his theory, but i don't think D Major/E Dorian was the correct choice for lead over that particular track..like he said, i would have jammed over it with Minor Pent.
you talk too much, this lesson is 15 minutes long, and you dont demonstrate anything really until a couple of minutes from the end, do you know what you are doing ???????????????
if you listen to this chord progression,,,,,,,it means that you can BLAST Dorian all over the big break in Freebird and that would be a cool option,,,:-))))
The solo doens't really highlight the Dorian sound sound that well - that's down to the progression as much as the actual solo... including some chords which highlight the major 6th tonality would have helped this methinks.... there's a lot of Emin pent going on and not much movement across the neck - everyone to their own, but I wouldn't say this is a great example of Dorian personally...
@carlitojonesius I don't think he's a great player at all. In fact, I get the impression that he's not even very musical but does this as a labour of love. What is important, though, is that he's a pretty good teacher (this lesson on the modes is great for its clarity and simplicity) and he's got a generous and giving spirit - after all, his lessons are free and that makes me a big fan.
@carlitojonesius being a good player doesnt mean he didnt show the dorian as best as someone trying to distringuish between emin pent and e dorian should have witnessed.
Actually I take it all back mate, I saw another video where I thought you sucked but actually you are fucking brilliant. Everything is very explained in this video, nice work.
ok im gettin it a lil better, but i still cant seem to make the tonality change
for example, im playing the chords you gave (E, G, D, A) but it still souds like im playing a D major scale, how exactly do i put the emphasis on the E to make it sound e dorian
use your minor chords cause Dorian is a minor tonality people get it mixed up for it being a major scale with a flat 3rd and flat7th but its a minor scale with a raised sixth from knowing this try using your minor chords and really express the notes in a minor chord then the Dorian is a perfect great sounding scale which is really great to use
@lilfisticuffs this video isnt exactly a great way to express the Dorian mode..my advice is to learn the mode shapes and play them over the key they are assigned to...THEN you can start mixing it up. If you don't know the modes as they are, it'll be confusing to try to do what this guy is doing
yeah this lesson is amazing . marty and next level are awsome . and they have mad alot of good guitat player good around the world right now just by there awsome lessons i wish i could meet these guys one day lol
awesome... lots of people post videos about what modes are and how they work... which is all good and well except they provide no explanation of how to APPLY them to your playing, which this video does... props
Great Info, He is a great teacher, but i noticed that when he was jamming he was combining the Pentatonic mode with Dorian but he was actually using more pentatonic than Dorian, thanks for the info though
Wow! That's really ground-breaking stuff for me, all that you said about "Dorin is just-- 'lower the major scale key by a whole step' and there you have it!"
i realy want to pkay in modes to realy spice up my playing and give it a more complex sound. i like playing bluesy hard rock and i want to get out of using the minor pentatonic with the b5. could you please give more examples of using it like that. I personaly dont like the sound of the solos you played but i know that musicaly they are great they just dont have the sound i like and i still dont know how to exactly apply dorian to get the sound i want
Personally, since he's playing in E Dorian, i'd think of E minor with a #6. In saying that I am in nooooo way taking away from how this guy puts it across. Very concise and easy to understand. Just makes more sense to ME to think of it as a minor scale rather than thinking in D Major.
David, i'm sure you've had the experience where something that's been bothering you for a long time all of a sudden goes "click," and thereafter makes perfect sense. this video did that for me. thanks for being so generous.
I watched both parts of this video and thought that all of the information was correct, well thought out and easily understandable. I was really looking forward to seeing/hearing the example solo. Unfortunately I found the video lacking here. The solo was weak and sporadic. Good information, bad solo.
Like rockerjeremy said, i can hear Slash using this. Jimi Hendrix, too. Anyone else hear Jimi in this? Also, You said there's times you really don't want to use Dorian. I imagine it could sound flat or sloppy if you used it at the wrong time. When would be a bad time to use it?
hey guys dose playing a guitar really improve your sexual ability cause i heard that scientist really found that after a series of experiments so ... WHAT ABOUT THAT DUDES !!
Nice man! I really want to get all the theory down, I dont know shit about intervals or major 7th chords or anything. Guess I should check out your website and perhaps buy a book ;)
If Ionian (major) consists of all whole steps, ie. ABCDE where do the flats, etc. come from in the modes. I thought the modes had different whole/half step intervals?
yah like you see this and you try and you might get frustrated because you cant get this sound.... part of it is because to get speed you need to practice the scale over and over again with a metronome getting slightly faster each time... but also you have to understand the basic chord progession and notes of the guitar... for example A w B w C 1/2 D w E 1/2 D w F w G (w = whole step 1/2 = half step)
@rockongoodpeople the progrtession that u use is E G D A. Could u tell me that on which scale that progression is formed?? Please and thanks for the lesson!

So basically, playing any major scale pattern that has the second note as the root note would be "dorian mode?". Say, playing B over C? etc.?

I could be wrong, but that might be the Phrygian mode. It supposedly has a Latin flavour to it.

@Skadoosh417 thats because alot of funk and Latin music both use alot of Dorian scales.

Simply put, 1-2-34-5-6-78 = Ionian
2-34-5-6-78-1 = Dorian
and so on, remember that 1 4 5 are major
2 3 5 and 6 are minor and 7 is diminished
when applying to chords...

If Ionian (major) consists of all whole steps, ie. ABCDE where do the flats, etc. come from in the modes. I thought the modes had different whole/half step intervals?
rams25 4 years ago
The major scale isn't all whole steps. B->C and E->F are half steps. The sharps and flats come in because of these
In C the scale starts with (whole, whole, half..)
C -> D -> E -> F
but in D would be
D -> E -> F# -> G
Hope that makes sense
brianbroom 4 years ago
yah like you see this and you try and you might get frustrated because you cant get this sound.... part of it is because to get speed you need to practice the scale over and over again with a metronome getting slightly faster each time... but also you have to understand the basic chord progession and notes of the guitar... for example A w B w C 1/2 D w E 1/2 D w F w G (w = whole step 1/2 = half step)
