  • Beautiful shelf cloud!

  • Yeah definitely a shelf cloud. Shelf clouds are on the leading edge of the thunderstorm whereas the wall cloud is at the rear end of the thunderstorm. Shelf clouds don't rotate like wall cloud and any lowering in the shape of a tornado is simply a gustnado. Wall clouds potentially form tornadoes and are generally larger and lower to the ground that shelf clouds.

  • true, shelfcloud :)

  • Shelf cloud, not wall cloud, but nice video as it is

  • who wants to watch twister?!

  • @xsevrinx nice i would love too. lol.

  • @xsevrinx that show got me hooked on storms/tornadoes when i was 5-6 i use to get home from school and watch that show 2 times a day i watched it so much my video tape worn out and had to buy a new one

  • yep, it's a shelf cloud. it is on the leading edge of the storm. the wall cloud is on the tail end of the storm. check out "wall cloud" on wikipedia

  • I'm sorry to inform you...that's a shelf cloud. It looks similar, but its associated with what is known as the "downdraft" in the storm. A wall cloud is associated with the updraft, and is located at the back of the storm. A shelf cloud is still potentially ominous though, as it can potentially indicate a strong downdraft/impending squall line...which could contain extremely damaging straight line winds.

  • @CumulonimbusCalvus and i think wall clouds r smaller

  • IT GANNA RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thats a shelf cloud, not a wall cloud. (im a skywarn spotter)

  • ive seen this today it was very brief tho it died in 5 minutes

  • if this is on the front of the storm, then its a shelf cloud.

  • Its called an undular bore, its a pressure difference, when the cloud begins to pass overhead you can see immediate reactions among the trees.

When a supercell is imminent and an undular bore gets involved, it usually gets real ugly real fast. As to say, if there were a funnel cloud in front of this bore, it would have basically multiplied it by a few. Quite a strange occurance to witness and be able to document.

Imagine a big traffic pileup, beingg slammed into by an 18wheeler

  • i thought i had a message's on an invincible instant messenger

  • The title of this video should say "Shelf cloud...wow..."

  • Comment removed

  • hey SonOfLarz39 is that the galactus coming to visit u at your home.. lol..

  • it would be funny if there was a building up by the wall cloud

  • what the fuck were those people thinkin when they thumbed down this great quallity vid.

  • Mothership1 prepare to land.

  • its a super cell -_-

  • Shelf clouds are really cool and not that common to see one so prominent like that! very cool. always followed by strong winds too. the strong straight line winds are what cause the shelf. Never tornadic either, thats just a side point

  • @frankiewxman So shelf clouds absolutely not spawn a tornado? I've seen a few of those. I just don't really know about them.

  • That's definitely a shelf cloud. Every now and then they produce a phenomena called a derecho which can be pretty destructive and are mistaken for a tornado by the general public.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm new to this).. The cell is rotating and the "fringe" at the base is outflow?

  • @LadyWeasel Not to say it's a wall cloud, though. ;)

  • @LadyWeasel No mam, the storm doesn't have to be rotating to produce a shelf cloud. Yes, it is outflow. I have seen way more non-rotating storms with shelf clouds, than rotating storms with shelf clouds. It is simply rain cooled air rushing down and going under warm, moist air, then the cloud forms. No rotation necessary.

  • @Landotter1 Ah! Thanks for the info :)

  • @LadyWeasel Yer welcome... best I could come up with at 3 AM. :-D

  • shelf could

  • damn, its like independece day movie Ö

  • thoes clouds had a very blue tint to them. A very good sign of a hail producing storm.

  • Sorry to tell you that this is not a wall cloud, this is a shelf cloud.

  • @BMPmama698 I was about to say the exact same thing. Thats for sure NOT a wall cloud although it probably got windy shortly after it past over. That storm appears to be a supercell thunderstorm and FYI, Wall Clouds are in rear of a storm, shelf clouds are in the front.

  • Shelfcloud.

  • The title of the song is not fitting with what`s going on in the video.

  • Bottom middle at :38 to :49 isn't a funnel... its scud. This is a classic shelf cloud.

  • bottom middle at :38 to :49 isn't a funnel.... its scud. This is a classic shelf cloud.

  • beutiful stuff like this shows us theres a god

  • i have video and pictures of this same cloud and same day but i was in Mundeline, Illinois. sweet i should collaborate a video too.

  • bottem middle of screen is funnel cloud

    at 0:38 - 0:49

  • bottem middle of screen is funnel cloud

  • Wow, this isn't even close to a wall cloud.

    Try shelf cloud.

  • in this video there is no Wall Cloud (from which we can generate tornadoes), this is just a shelf cloud arc that forms on the advancing edge of the storm, before the gust front or front of the gusts.

  • chuck norris' girlfriend must be scared.

  • That is scary... : /

  • Nuclear shockwave lol

  • This isn't Wall cloud. This is Shelf cloud :-)

  • why do i hear yahoo messenger noise?

  • That's a shelf cloud.

  • Holy shit! you should have started running at 0:41 it was moving toward you,AND IT'S NOT A SHELF CLOUD! IT'S A MESO CYCLONE!

  • @LEGOACDC123 gosh calm down!

  • Amazing <3

  • Im Sorry For The Girls That Were Running at 0:07

  • vry kool

  • The shelf cloud was shaped by the down-draft winds that were blowing the tree branches around when it passes overhead.

  • Actually its my mothers gas cloud....it was chili night at bingo. : /

  • @XxninailsxX

    hahahaha

  • @ILUVHORSES1981

    XXXDDD

  • @XxninailsxX XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • That is called a Derecho Cloud. But yeah, they are huge, scary, and a potential for natural disaster!

  • @spamdude060 no its a shelf cloud

  • Awesome shelf cloud and awesome video.

  • Those are some FAST children in the beginning :)

  • weird . .

  • It's a shelf could associated with a gust front. Pretty standard thunderstorm phenomenon.

  • I had oner of those come over my house yesterday, it didnt produce any tornadoes nor did it become severe

  • the song really fits with the video

  • @airsoftshooter11 XD ye it sure is a beatiful day out there

  • It's probably HARP being tuned and tested.

  • can you imagine if this was some kind of huge wave ready to crash on the small metropolitan city full of awe struck fear!!! cool cloud.

  • just always wished I could see that type of supercell storm.

  • I would have ran inside screaming if i saw a cloud like that :O

  • awesome

  • ya U2!!!! U2 owns the universe...of course after this giant cloud lol. Great video!!!

  • this is mothership: calling all units to report to mothership or i will come get u

  • Captavating Shelf Cloud! Good job with this vid, U2 song litterally makes it kinda humorous as well :)

  • That is an awesome gust front!!! Wish I were there to see it!! Was this a supercell?

  • That cloud is known as a shelf cloud, it occurs when cooled air is pushed out from the outflow of a storm undercutting the warm air, which rises and forms this cloud.

No worries though, my first shelf, I thought I saw a wall cloud until I was corrected. The main difference between a shelf cloud and a wall cloud is that shelf clouds are usually in the front while wall clouds are in the back. Also, wall clouds usually mean a tornado will form. Shelf clouds just indicate a nasty gust front.

  • @SARwannabe222 Cloud wall is in the back? What does that mean?

  • Maybe a microburst storm...

  • @TheSayaka1 this has nothing to so with a microburst.

  • its a fucking wall cloud asswipe

  • @pugsrock9 false, this would be a shelf cloud

  • independence day will smith.. that how the mother ship enter L.A.

  • lmao, i saw 1 yesterday!

  • He probebly knows it's a shelf cloud by now. I used to think they were wall clouds to. great video!

  • Pretty cool, nice structure,it is a shelf cloud.I do think these should be called wall clouds though.

  • omg its a shelf cloud holy shit aliens finally came NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SonOfLarz39: when your third arm grew, was it because you were being provoked by sheep or dogs?

  • As a climatologists for 18 years, and 22 years as a Spotter for the NWS, i can tell you that is NOT a wall cloud, if fact what you were witnessing was the passing of a shelf cloud either on a powerful squall line or an HP supercell. . . Thank you.

  • Nice shelf cloud :) greets from germany :D

  • thats so wierd how you can see it moving in true time!

  • Definitely not a wall cloud, but a very pronounced and awesome looking Shelf Cloud. That must have been one powerful supercell!

  • Shelf Cloud. Wikipedia it.

  • Its a shelf cloud.

  • dude the song ruined it

  • Independence day

  • shelf cloud......

  • Not a wall cloud, is a shelf Side, begining of the storm u nub.

  • UMMMMM.......thats called a tornado...yeeeeaaaaahhhh...

  • @datechydude

    That's not a tornado, it's a shelf cloud.

  • Nature can create some beautiful storms

  • Cool shelf cloud. They can be pretty creepy. The worst one I've seen was green and moving horribly fast. Was walking out of the gym, looked up and saw it on the horizon and was like "HOLY $(*#($*" went back inside and the storm hit us in under a minute. Crazy strong winds and the following updraft had quite a few tornadoes.

  • If it had been a wall cloud, i would have wondered at the fact that you are outside filming an approaching mesocyclone. Since it is a shelf cloud, i'm not going to wonder at that. Also i would wonder at the fact there are 2 children running around (bottom of camera)

  • @NoobHunterzInc (Update:) But since its not a mesocyclone, GO AHEAD AND FILM :D, nice pics.

  • Nice cloud structure!

  • That is some crazy stuff for sure. Not sure what i'd do if I seen something like that?!

  • That is a shelf cloud not a wall cloud. Self clouds are outflow features and many times larger than a wall cloud. They can be a sign of strong straightline winds. Wall clouds will form under the inflow basin of a storm and are many times smaller. This is still a great capture, what a well sculpted shelf cloud that you filmed.

  • Great shelf cloud, but it's not a wall cloud at all. Still great images. It looks like a mature storm, so maybe if you had moved to the right spot, you could have seen a real wall cloud

  • That is one beautiful wall cloud.

  • did you get any damage during the storm? Just wondering.

  • COOL!!! 5/5

  • Wow man, thats cool!!! :D

  • Wall Clouds look cool

  • How is leting there kids out when it is a wall cloud outside?? Nice vid man, can't wait for the Us trip across Tornado alley.

  • @ludvikm94 take pics of tornadoes please.

  • @Imzefast3yone I hope not to run into one, and my dad's driving. But I hope so badly to see one. We Will be driving through TN, AR, MO, KS.

  • yea thats a shelf cloud which indicates a outflow dominate storm there is a ton of rotation on that thing. a squal line is a line over several storms. its different

  • shelf clouds u cant tell rotation

  • look at the structurethe shelf clou its self doesnt have rotation but since its attached to the base along the gust front it is rotating with the storm and the storm in this video is rotating

  • or gust front, i dunno if a squall line and gust front are the same thing or not.

  • thats actually a shelf cloud. wall clouds dont extend around the front of the storm. thet form on the southwest rear of the storm. a shelf cloud like that indicates that strong winds are pushing the clouds to form that way and present no tornadic activity.

  • please turn off that music!

  • @20jimmy200 you can do that yourself..

  • Im sorry but that was not a wall cloud, that was a nuclear explosion. please contact your doctor.

  • lol don't bother commenting me and telling me i'm a wuss or anything cause I could give 2 spits what ya think LOL dude that was all in jest. Just to get some wadd off like you to start. Kind of a social studie experiment. my point was proved to a friend of mine. thanks. As for the weight it's due to severe arthritus at an early age and a poor diet. Your words are wasted trying to annoy. I don't storm chase. I watch the videos made people stupid enough to do it for me LOL

  • you would be storm chasers are a hilarious lot to me. most of you would piss yourself if a tornado came close enough to you to cause you to move against your will. I'm a 6'3" 300+'lb. giant of a man with a history of not backing down from anything. I see a twister I back down:) lol don't bother commenting me and telling me i'm a wuss or anything cause I could give 2 spits what ya think.

  • and I suppose you have the market cornered on storm chasing? People have different reasons for doin it, just like you may have your own reasons for being 300 pounds.

  • @RisenDevilz

I'd piss myself if a tornado came close. I live in California..

    I'll pass on dat shit

  • licky you, i just have, cirrus, and rain/snow/ and sometime not much thank 2 mm of hail

  • eeeeh... video would be better without the song..

  • This is a Shelf Cloud

  • Cloud Walls r rlly frightening... They wud scare the hell out of me if they were real. This is the 1st time I"ve ever seen or even heard of this...

  • its cool how it has them lines in the clouds

  • This is excellent, thanks for sharing!

  • Very cool. I think i would be kinda worried since I would have no idea what it was. But..yeah. thats cool.

  • Very interesting. I would have been drooling if that passed over my house because im so interested in such things.

  • Shelf Cloud, Duh! Moving Fast. This cloud was part of the lead edge of a derecho.

  • This cloud certainly is a supercell

  • yeah, definately a shelf cloud.

  • This is a shelf. A wall cloud kinde looks like it comes outof a bigger clould and is shaped like an anvil sort of.

  • Very good video, congratuations ! I think this was a veri- very strong thunderstorm. Looks like a giant wave !!! " Extreme Spinner" in Bucharest.

  • It's the MOTHER SHIP!!!!!!!!! A shelf cloud, and it is a beauty! Saw one like this on June 3, 2007 in Burleson, Texas. Scared hell out of me, guaranteed! 5/5 stars!

  • Looks like a derecho

  • um thats NOT a wall cloud its a SHELF cloud.

  • WOW!!! THATA ALL I CAN SAY JUST...WOW

  • tahts a shelf cloud not a wall cloud

  • this "wall cloud" is called a squall line.

  • Wow, I remeber seeing this cloud. That is awesome that you got a video of it because I couldn't find my camera to take pictures of it.

What are the odds that I would find something like this again. Funny.

  • Beauty of a Shelfcloud. No wallcloud here. But look at the trees in the beginning, you can exactly see when the outflow reaches them.

  • So that what I've seen today was a shelf cloud? I've seen this cloud and when it was here a really evil thunderstorm began o.O

  • Wall clouds are at the back of the storm, this is a shelf cloud cos it's in front of all the poooooooooo! poo poo ppoo pooo do you like POOOO?

  • its a shelf cloud

  • it s not a wall cloud is a shelf

  • Be cautious WMG morons might take the audio away.

  • Its really too bad that you had to add that music though. Videos like this are so much better when you're hearing the natural sounds, not music.

  • ya, this vid would be better if u had left the music out.

  • great stuff!

  • I REMEMBER THIS

  • No it's a Derecho

  • That shelf cloud is moving fast. It looked cool when it was under the squall of that arcus cloud. The squall underneath looked like a roll cloud. But it was just a squall. You can notice that arcus clouds and cumulonimbus clouds get an accessory cloud called a scud. Scud is a type of fractus cloud that usually associates a thunderstorm or preticipation cloud. Cumulonimbus and the arcus clouds usually get scud.

  • k, Mr. Scientist. I love how nobody asked about any of that but you thought you should show off :D

  • Sorry but this is NOT a wall cloud. This is a really well formed shelf cloud and looks great but its not a wall cloud.

  • OMG I am amazed that a tornado can be formed this fast. i didnt saw the actuall transformation when i saw this video for the first time this is sick

  • Yes that is a big shelf cloud!

  • One heck of a shelf cloud. Wow!

  • those look likes the clouds from the scene in the movie Independance day when the clouds with the ships behind them move in

  • that would be a squall line

  • I'll be honest, I would've freaked out. We never see any of that around here.

  • Its pushing a heavy front through

  • this would be around the time I shat my pants

  • there is a tornado being formed out of thet

  • shelf cloud

  • Nice Shelf Cloud

  • Where there any nuclear tests in your neighborhood? ;D

  • Now that you mention it that was about the time my third arm grew.....

  • @SonOfLarz39 haha

  • that was so cool, i never saw that before.
