I recently just got a dwarf hamster (looks quite identical to yours). I got him from my cousin who did a poor job taking care of him...she only cleaned out his cage twice of the time she has had him, the poor guy. So I agreed to take him and he's living a better life now ^^ Clean cage and he even gets treats every now and then. The only problem is that, since she never really worked with him, is that he likes to bite.

@Mayah333 all hamsters love food. Put food in your hand and place it in front of her. She'll eventually take food from your hand. Don't pet her yet though, not until she's used to you. Eventually she'll let you pet her no problems. :)

@ILikeHamsters1111 the best thing to do is to try not petting him for a while. Put food on your hand, and have him climb on to get food. Don't feed him any other way. Don't startle him while he's eating from your hand. Do this for a few weeks every day, and the trust will build.

@ILikeHamsters1111 unfortunately, no there isn't a way to train them. Russian Dwarf hammies bite a lot... Usually, hamsters bite when they are scared. If you get him to trust you, then he won't bite anymore.

@vihena Actually it depends on the temperment of the hamster and how well it's been socialized with humans while it was a baby. My previous Winter Pearl was a real biter - we could never pick him up until the day he died, but my latest Dwarf is the absolute sweetie. He's quite gentle and mellow, and loves being stroked/handled. If you get your hammie from an abusive owner/pet shop (which I did for my 1st hamster), the chances of them being unmanageable is much higher.

@ILikeHamsters1111 those type of hamsters almost ALWAYS bite. they don't like to be handled so the best thing to do is to just leave it alone. My sister used to have one of those and it wud bite like crazy. I got a blueberry dwarf and it only bit me once in its lifetime (R.I.P. poor lola)but i don't think they sell that kind anymore. If you want a hamster that will not bite you and does not mind gettn handled, get a chinese dwarf. thats wat i have now and they NEVER bite.

They generally cost between $15 to $25 each. The cages and supplies you buy for them can add up significantly though!

It doesn't actually matter if it's a boy or a girl. They act about the same. If you don't want your hamster to have hammie babies though, make sure that if you're buying a pair, that they're the same gender!

Hamsters are different from gerbils for sure, so some good advice is to research about the exact type of hamster you're getting. hamsterhideout is a good site for help and resources to get you started. Enjoy your new hammy!

they can be somewhat temperamental, but are usually very gentle. They make great pets. They don't bite, typically, but it does happen. Sometimes they test-bite lightly and that's really cute.

They don't keep you up all night either, unless you get them a squeaky wheel to run on. lol. Silent Spinners are the best kind of wheels.
