Piano is a percussive instrument and played against two trombones, the percussion element is very assertive and pointed, counterbalancing the baritone brassy tones of the trombones. The piano is constantly setting the rhythm; but there is also dialogue, a chatting one might say between the trombone duet and the piano, i.e. the interesting contrapuntal dialogue in the 2nd Mvt with the piano leading. (2) It sounds classically to romantically but there are modulations and harmonic turns, also rhythmical specialities, whiche were never used in classical or romantic music. Dear Daniel, I really enjoyed this masterpiece. I love the second movement most. I can pretend to hear it with a "Posaunenchor" or brass ensemble in the Christmastide on a German market place. All themes an motives of the sonata are "volkstümlich" (like traditional folk musik), mostly typical American especially in the first move. I also mean to hear a German influence. The instrumentation is unusually and very interesting.
