  • ...thumbs up if you think you could rock any of the clothes he's wearing in 012

  • thumbs up if you still watching this in 2012 :P

  • What a performer ! One of my fave vids on youtube !

  • I long to be that laid back and comfortable with myself and to be who I am and not worry about what anyone else thinks about it... Great performance!

  • @kodiak450r I think that's what made michael hedges so fucking awesome. Just one dude up there churning out great songs all by himself. Like when Neil young went solo.

  • The 9 dislikes have to be for his clothes.....

  • " a British Band" yeah the grand canyon is a ditch .......

  • WOW!

  • as amazing he was being solo, imagine what kind of music he could have turned out with a backing band.

  • "British band"

  • what a voice! phew! hedges could wail!

  • Anybody know a good video or link to read a bio on him?

  • What a great talent, and what a great loss. When/where was this filmed?

  • @Realitytourist i believe his live tour in Wolftrap? I could be wrong.

  • heallz to the yeah! RIP Michael Hedges

  • Showing my age, 56, I had never heard of this guy before wandering around YouTube listening to my favorites from long ago. This guy really rates genius. He brings a wholly unique interpretation to what he does. I watched this after watching him do All Along the Watch Tower. I have to agree with with Kachina 25 - this Hedges kid is in a league of his own - only from what I gather of other posts, I imagine he has died. A real shame.

  • @Chiczaro Michael died in 1997 at the age of 43 in a car accident. Much too soon to be taken but his music will live forever. Brilliant artist.

  • gives me the shivers all the time

  • i love you hedges!!!

  • is this a from a commercially available source.. dvd perhaps?

  • AWESOMENESS!!!

    Namaste

    Kensho

  • thumps up if you still watching this in 2011

  • @iggit100 bitch please, its already 2012!!

  • if i was there id throw my undies on stage XD

  • extrica je ovaj,.,steta sto poginu

  • Why can't this audience REACT ??? STAND! CLAP! SCREAM! Sheeesh, wake up to your lameness, folks.

  • @19babyjack55 they wanna listen

  • @19babyjack55 dude, screaming and claping is lame. they are being respectful while watching the genius

  • If you like Michael Hedges (which I do!), you should check out Michael Kelsey. Kelsey is definitley heavily influenced by Hedges - not a bad thing

  • Audience doesn't seem to appreciate that performance enough at the time, but that was pretty damn good!!!

  • That has got to be the best cover of this song I have ever seen. Mastery playing and singing it.

  • this blows me away

    We miss you Mike

  • Wow probably one of the coolest covers EVER!

  • Clap LOUDER!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=zxshuiT5GVo

check out my version and see what u think guys : )

Its nothing special but i hope yous like it ! : )

  • He looks awesome with that hat and those curls, he was a man of many dimensions both regarding music and fashion styles.

  • Dead crowd ew.

  • its by a british band ,the best kind lol

  • Come on Keith and Mick .........cover this Cover !

  • Absolutely great from a guitar hero who touched so many of us so deeply.

  • Michael Hegdes guitar playing is cool but he could sing great as well.

  • Icant even find the words to describe this... a genius interpreting one of the most fantastic songs in the world

  • Michael...what are you wearing? Are those fight trunks?

  • it the 80's wat do you expect?

  • I love this man. I was lucky enough to see him live on 4/13/90, 10/6/90, 5/29/91, 9/26/92, & 9/30/95. Thanks for posting this. Missing him.

  • I have been getting a Hedges education lately. The man's playing was beyond words.

  • It's so sad when guys like this get taken away so early...awesome human being.

  • One of those very rare human beings that can see music differently than most of us. A true musical wonder! Miss yah Micheal...RIP

  • People, please stop comparing Michaels arrangements to the originals. It really bugs me that you guys can't see the appeal in both and admire it as it's own take on the song.

It's like comparing an apple to an orange, sure they are both fruit, but the qualities are completely different and have their own flavour.

  • this version is way better in my opinion

  • gahh makes me want to learn it... and i think i will!

  • A *lot* better than even the Stones ever did it!

  • @TheShawnbean

Frag me mate! Ok, he's a genius, but... let's not be blasphemious here!

  • @SZiuAlu Blasphemy? What, did someone have some snark to say about Clapton? ;-P~~

More to the point: every time I've seen the Stones play "Gimme Shelter," it has been good, enjoyable, and firmly aimed at their target demographic--there are good reasons for those gentlemen's bank balances.

Hedges, though, seems to delight in the song for the song's own sake, which renews the piece, and elevates it to a point beyond where the mass appeal approach of the Stones leaves it.

    Both are high Art.

  • Brilliance

  • genial

  • The first time I saw Michael in 1985 in Redondo Beach CA this was his opening song. He came out from the parking lot with remote so the music was playing but you didn't know where it was coming from. He danced through the door and danced into my life and forever wrecked my guitar abilities. RIP Michael.

  • only the good die young

  • Man, I so sorry he's not around anymore. What a great musician

  • lol, he's wearing everlast shorts.

  • amazing man.....got such soul!

  • "written by a British band"......... indeed

  • Is that his J-65M?

I love this version of Gimme Shelter.

  • this guy is just amazing with his guitar .. long time I didn't see another that "crazy" performance .. man just look at his outfit :D I guess the drugs don't work .. but they kinda have contributed to his genious

  • Im sure that Hedges somewhere up in heaven. playing his guitar...

  • this is one of the best sounding acoustic guitar set ups ever if not the best, love that sound rip mike

  • Totally Awesome

  • Anyone can explain me what´s means the numbers that appears in this turning C#2E2B2E3E3B3? I use many open turnings, mostly from the blues, but i never saw this way to write it...

  • @ElizaldeBlues i think its something to do with the octave... but i'm not sure

  • That is correct.

  • The numbers represent the octaves in which each is located, in this case, the second and third octaves.

  • i think its to do with the octaves of the strings.

  • @cjdavis18 they arent in octaves....tuned the same...why it rings out so much

  • No one in the firmament of heaven plays like Michael Hedges ... I mourn his loss but revel in the elegance he left with us

  • its a great song to begin with''& he takes it to a whole another realm & level''he was an amazing talent''some people that comment don't get it''when some one is playing there own version''if everyone stared at a book & just played note for note''you would never have something like this''this is what is about''make it your own''

  • incredible!

  • Im not a Stones fan at all but this was pretty cool

  • Nor am I but I think is probably one of if not their best tune and Hedges does a great version of it.

  • I can't seem to find an album released by Michael that features this cover... does anyone know?

  • This cover (but probably not this actual version) was released on a rare and out of print 1993 album called 'Strings of Steel' - a compilation created for release only in South America to accompany a Hedges tour there.

Go to the Hedges website titled 'Nomadland' for details!

  • I have the exact songs they have on Strings of Steel that are not on any other albums, such as this song, if you want them send me a message with your email and I will email you them

  • you can use a youtube audio ripper to get the track<< =]

  • absolutely fucking awesome - he's simply in his own league

  • Pretty cool.

  • what effect is he using?

  • Sounds like Light Flanging. Think of the end of Life in the Fast Lane for a deeper use of the effect.

  • I don't hear the periodic "fluttering" from a flanger. Could it be just a phaser?

  • chorus maybe

  • You can get it with the basic effects, it is chorusing

  • He's using a tc electronic 1210 stereo chorus/flanger in pitch modulation mode, on the low strings, treble strings are straight Sunrise mag pickup

  • He uses it on the Sunrise period, all strings, and leaves the FRAP unaffected..

  • Yes, you're right, although I thought that for the low-strung guitars like in this video (Martin J65M?) he didn't use the FRAP. In any case, I love that sound he gets.

  • Better than the original testify and im British for god sake.

  • And for this I respect you! :)

  • Lets not get carried away here....its a good cover but not as good as the original.

Have you heard The Stereophonics version? tTats possibly the best cover of this song.

  • its all a matter of your style and opinions nahh i havent heard the stereophonics version but i bet it is just as good as this , im just a hedges junkie :)

  • when a musician can cover a song by himself with no other band members and still sound as powerful as the original, you know he's good. so raymantico in my opinion he "rocks an acoustic guitar" like a pro

  • when you use quotation marks ya aren't allowed to add words, Noel G.'s mini-me

  • Uh-oh I've annoyed Redlandsma...

    (a.k.a. Noel G.'s mini-me)

  • What do you mean, "just OK"? He's fucking brilliant on guitar!

  • amazing...his playing is phenomenal...and yet his voice really works too!

  • We miss you Michael....you live on with all this great music and energy you left here with us.

    RIP

    <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • All other guitarists are playing checkers, he was plying chess.

  • One of the greatest analogies I've ever read. Not to mention appropriate.

  • It might have been even better if I hadn't misspelled playing...Oh well,I'm glad you agree anyway.

  • he is a legend

  • hahaaaaaaaaaa this guy was a nut <3

  • very cool .. 5 stars of course ..
