  • That was lame Johnny cash does it the best

  • honestly prefer this version and i hate NIN its beautifull :)

  • 321 have never hurt

  • its been too damn long since I got to feel that pain, the old familiar sting. I need the real thing in my life again sober is overrated.

  • great song...but C'mon, the johnny cash cover is friggin amazing!

  • great song

  • I lone NIN, But Johnny Cashes version is better

  • I love the way at the begining it kinda fades in and out and the music switches between my earbuds and I get a dizzy feeling

  • @KellyDarling16 xD I love you lol

  • I really don't think it matters who sings it. The lyrics are beautiful in either version of the song. I think they are equally amazing, I do like Johnny Cash's version a tiny bit better but Johnny Cash's album was also produced by an insane good CD producer. Plus, even though I liked Nine Inch Nails first, I never heard this song until Johnny Cash did it. Making my opinion slightly tilted towards the Johnny Cash version already. Really they're both just amazing.

  • Johnny Cash Aced It

  • Anyone else realize that youtube comments accomplish nothing in the real world...

  • I like ice cream.

  • @KellyDarling16 This is the best comment EVER!

  • I think we can all agree that one lady did horrible on it

  • cash's version is better cause it brings chills down my spine

  • I think the Johnny's cover sounds better. More emotion.

  • @smoothymcgyver Understand that I'm not bashing on you, but this version IS supposed to be a man on the edge of everything...

  • Different Keys. This one is in B Minor, Cash plays his in A Minor.

  • Johnny cash's is better

  • @IHNIWMANI your mum is better ;)

  • Fucking amazing.

  • I heard tom waits covered this song...if anyone knows where i can find it, please ket me know? :)

  • Gotta hear the new Leona Lewis version!

  • yeah dude, if you hate NIN then thats probably why you like johnny's better lol.Reznor is a fucking genius

  • I like Johnny Cash cover better... Maybe because I am a huge fan, and kinda hate NIN... either way, GREAT SONG

  • 1:39

  • This is a good song definetly. IMO i like the johnny cash song more just bc im a johnny cash fan. If you like this one more then more power to ya. Their both great

  • Trent's voice is chillingly eerie, NO ONE can do it right like cash and he, however I believe if Leona had been as incredibly impacted as many of us have when she first heard it it could be the reasoning behind the cover, however that's no excuse. It's almost blasphemy to try and put a happy undertone to a beautifully crafted sorrowful song as this celebrities these days must know their boundaries

  • The like the three versions. From a technical point of view Leona surpasses NIN and Johnny Cash but she lacks the emotion and the history to really nail it and make it as spine tingling as this or the Cash version.

  • NIN

  • the lesson of this song is...(drum roll) dont fuck with eric cartman!

  • We had to listen to both Johnny Cash and NIN versions in my music lesson and do a comparison over which one was better but I think they are both really awesome. :)

  • Johnny Cash is better

  • @AbnormalVisions Learn to rock'n roll before .... STUPID !!

  • @osunetti Learn to rock and roll before???? I love rock and metal but I like Johnny Cash's version better. Usually rock comes before country for me but Johnny Cash is a legend.

  • The awkward moment when people on the internet ruin some of the greatest songs ever written. Fucking idiots go and argue on Lil Wayne, One Direction, Justin Bieber etc etc. If you want to comment like a 12 year old go and listen to the music of a 12 year old.

  • @92Liamwood Hey, I'm 12!, I love both this song and the cover, just because some tweens abuse utube don't think we all

  • i'm torn i can't decide which one is better .....meh i'll just listen to both of them

  • I love both versions I heard it first from johnny cash but I personally prefer the slower version that is nine inch nails :)

  • I've always known that this song was originally NIN's, but all I've ever listened to was the Cash version... After finally listening to the original, I'm kind of upset that I wasted my time. Not a fan. I'm not saying I'm right, but it is what it is.

  • calm done everyone.

  • STFU AND LISTEN YOU CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNTS

  • Songs@Spillane001

  • Just in case anyone needs info on the Johnny Cash album his cover of this song is on

Johnny Cash- American IV: The Man Comes Around Mr. Cash has recorded many many songs written by other people throughout his entire career. Many were very popular songs when he recorded them. In the era that he was touring and recording extensively it was very common. Some songs were released nationally by three or four bands and nobody thought much of it. But like they say Johnny had really good taste in son

  • 9 inch nail wrote the fucking song! Johnny cash did a cover of this song. M'kay people.

  • Cash did not write it! Reznor wrote it! Where people get confused is that Reznor gave the rights to the song to Cash because he actually liked his version better than NIN. So technically now the song belongs to Cash but Reznor still wrote it.

  • Reznor Wrote this song and Cash Covered it You fucking Idiots

  • Im so confused. People said Johnny Cash wrote it for Nine Inch Nails and then he covered it??? I think Nine Inch Nails just wrote it on their own and then he covered it. All the stories are different. o.o

  • When he is whispering it just makes the song better abd more creepier which is good :)

  • in johnny's version he says thorns not shit

  • @MrBloodybullet yeah reznor changed it when he covered it.

  • leona lewis didnt wrote this song or ANY song. she is a commercial product. end of story

  • @AyaxTelemonio LOL ikr johnny cash wrote this song

  • Johnny Cash's cover of this is probably the best cover song of all time <33

  • Both Cash and NIN did a phenominal job

the only problem I have is that the verses are sung a little too soft

    other then that great job

  • I like this song

  • For Christ's sake people! Unfortunately I saw the negative comments by accident. The controversy is over who's version is better??? Who the fuck cares? It's the lyrics that matter! It's the message it sends that is important. I can't tell you how sick I am of people that lack the depth to even appreciate meaningful lyrics. I guess it's not your fault. You aren't stupid, you just don't hear his words. If I did not feel alone in this shallow world before, I sure as hell do now.

  • I know there are way too many critical comments posted here and I am choosing to ignore them. It's ok to not like this song, it just means that you can't relate to it which is actually a good thing. I do. I am such a complete mess because at 4 years old I died inside. I have forced myself to just feel nothing. But at times I have to release my pain and I do it on those I love. I caused my own father so much pain and stress he collapsed. I thought I had killed him. Today I become a recluse.

  • Dude...nine inch nails sang this. Johnny cash made a cover to it. Jesus. Know your fuckin music. Fuck.

  • Kermit the Frog's version is the best hahaha

  • Kermit the Frog's version is the best hahahaha

  • its johnny cashs song if anyone can sing it he can sing it the best the words mean more too him thank nin so stfu and enjoy it.

  • @wqqewqeqweqweqw ingore my poor english bitch

  • JOHNY Cash version is ok.

but johny's version doesn't have the promenores behind the wall (song),listen to Downward Spiral on your stereo system on volume max. its freaking better if u listening this way...;D

    NIN POWA!

  • In some moods I like this version better. In some moods I like Johnny's version better. Both are fucking amazing.

  • Jhonny Cash's version is way better (in my opinian)

  • @abc12319525 Listen to the live version of NIN. I hate this recorded version. To distorted to me. But the live sounds so good

  • @abc12319525

    way better

  • I love this song ^^ :D

  • I like Nine Inch Nail's version better, but that's just me. o:

  • johnny cashs version gives me chill down my sping but i love nine inch nails 2 cant take nothing away from them if it wasnt for them there wouldnt have been such a good cover and song for me surpassing my drug addiction.....live laugh love life goes on

  • @captainspiwtf, this is the original not the cover. Cash covered it.

  • I wish I had nine inch nails driven into my skull before I heard this. This cover does for this song what twilight did for vampires :@

  • @captainspiwtf This is the original... -_-

  • @captainspiwtf this wasnt a cover dumbass

  • Johnny cash is way better

  • You could have it all I like this part :)

  • I used to live in bakersfield and do heroin which is where I first heard this song. I didnt even know what it was about I only heard the chorus and sang along to that part. Now that I am for the most part clean and I really sit and hear the non chorus lyrics its funny that I was scoring to this song and not even realizing how much it relates

  • the remake by johnny cash has wayy more views than this original. which kinna makes me think dat more ppl saw (and heard) the Cash version first, which makes me think that of corse the commentators below me thinks that Cash's version is better....me personally, i like NIN version better

  • @cochino261 I fucking love Johnny Cash but this just send chills through my body, plus the main guitar riff is beautiful. I agree, NIN's version is a lot better.

  • This version is awesome, but Johnny Cash's version gives it the necessary pain and sadness this song needs.

  • Comment removed

  • even though this is the original and obviously its close to the hearts of NIN being such an emotional and personal song... I still prefer johnny cash's rendition!

  • I like Cash's verson more But this was realy good

  • @Quintus707 How can you? (This is meant as a polite question, not an insult to your music taste)

  • @Zoddca321 well, I've lisen to Johnny Cash's music sence I was 15, I realy like the sadness in Cash's voice when he sings hurt, In this verson (this how I feel) the singer don't have the pain and powerful voice that Cash had, I feel that this song belongs to a old man who's about to die and not a young singer, but this verson was good but I like Cash's acoustic verson

  • whoaohhhh

  • YES!!! I'm the 311th dislike!!!!! GO 311!!!!! Amber is the color of your energy.....

  • True lovers connect to this song

  • wtf...

  • Anyone who knows anything about heroin addiction knows he meant every word in this song. Maybe Johnny Cash sang it better, but he couldn't have possibly meant it more.

  • leona lewis sings it better

  • Johnny cash version is better, but that's my opinion

  • I like the Johnny Cash version, just because it's acoustic and there isn't weird noises in it.

  • I like nine inch nails, but this was just absolutely appalling.

  • @Skeiither u have to be strong buddy. thats life

  • It's a shame that everyone just can't appreciate how wonderful the song is. Cash's version is phenomenal, but both Johnny and Trent went through their own hardships in life and the song can bring true meaning to many individuals. No version is truly any greater than the other.

If anything without Reznor having made the song we couldn't appreciate any other version. But Trent himself has stated Johnny Cash covering his song was the greatest honor of his career. R.I.P. Johnny NIN Forever

  • OK guys.

    Trent Reznor wrote the song.

    Johnny Cash covered it.

Trent Reznor said that was the coolest thing that had ever happened to him as a musician.

If Johnny Fucking Cash covered a song you wrote, wouldn't you think so too?

SO, basically the original was good enough for Johnny Cash to cover it. The original AND the cover are both awesome, get over yourselves people.

  • @CAMxman5 whoops your right but it was the other way around johnny cash wrote it...

  • @1991jmoney no he didn't you fucking retard

  • @TisLehwis Yes he did do some research and i don't meen Wikepedia lol

  • @1991jmoney no he didn't you idiot, I'm looking it up for the second time and EVERYTHING says it was written by reznor

  • @TisLehwis LOL u actually looked it up twice mission successful.

  • @1991jmoney whatever you say brah

  • @1991jmoney hey yo smart guy, 1st off if johnny cash wrote it how come NIN released it 8 YEARS BEFORE cash ever did? 2nd off, both versions are great in their own way stop arguing over who wrote it which trent did but anyway GREAT song love it, and i love both versions equally it all depends in what kinda mood im in for which one i want to hear

  • Suicidal thoughts lurke about my mind.

  • @TheProvehitoinaltum It's about shooting up with needles, the second line says it all.

  • is it me or in the beginning did you think it was about someone cutting themselves?

  • C'est la vie

  • I hate the wind or whatever that is in the song. I find it friggin annoying but I love the song!

  • @Ddgolem12 I thought it was really awesome, and made the song sound eerie.

  • @Ddgolem12 YEAH!!

  • awful sound quality

  • i just snorted two 40mg opanas just to make the pain go away. Sometimes I hurt my self just to see if I can feel. I wish I could say I score only for the fun of it. I score to try to fit into whats "normal society". One mite ask whats normal about that, well its the only time where i can socialize and not be awkward at work and with peoople is when I'm fucking ripped off opiates. I just got out of detox 3 weeks ago for heroin and thought that I mite be able to be happy sober. but I cant :(

  • @myPAINisSELFchosen85 Hang in there. Fighting heroin addiction myself. Been addicted for 8 years and I'm only 23. Methadone is just...even worse. Try suboxone, it's expensive (but nothing compared to all the money you're flushing down your arms - if you're anything like me) but totally worth it. Prayers and love go out to you.

  • @joshwhitexo And @myPAINisSELFchosen85

I am in recovery for heroin. I am now clean from August 28th of this year. Methadone has worked for me. Suboxone did not. I think suboxone is great if you just want a detox, but for long term, i would go with Methadone. In my opinion, it is safer because if you get the craving you can use and not have to break through the naloxone. You dont have to shoot a gram to break through to get high.

  • @thefong02135

I wish you luck in your recovery and congrats on getting clean. You should feel very proud of yourself :)

  • @thefong02135 Methadone is much more dangerous. Long term affects are horrible and the withdrawals make kicking heroin look like a joke. Take this from someone who was on methadone for over a year (and my father who was on it for a total of thirty-one years). It's just substituting heroin for another opiate (that's synthetic, which makes it stronger) that's legal. You still get high on methadone. Subs just block cravings, there's no high. It's for someone who really wants to quit.

  • @thefong02135 I'm not attacking you. I just don't think you have been on it long enough to realize how terrible it is for you. My advice is talk to some of the people at your methadone clinic and ask them how it's worked out for their lives. It's pharmaceutical grade. At least you're getting off the smack and for that I commend you. Try the subs again though and then taper off slowly and you can be completely clean and not dependent on anything. Feel free to msg me if either of you need help.

  • I, unlike some of my fellow Nine Inch Nails fans, think it's really good that Leona Lewis decided to do this song because it has introduced a lot of Nine Inch Nails fans to Leona and her music. I think I heard the other day that her album sales have increased dramatically since she released this... presumably from the newly appreciative Nine Inch Nails fans.

  • both versions are amazing in there own way...the may be the same song but at the same time very different...love them both.

  • I feel like that sometimes... and I did that too :/

  • Cash did it best

  • Cash.

  • im 14 and yeah i love dis song ;D

  • The original one is very good, but i love cash's version :P

  • Leona Lewis's version is better.

  • leona lewis slaughtered the original.

  • WTH!!! that's rude

  • Nice how you're all talking about other versions of this song on this song's page. Nice as in stupid. You're all stupid.

  • I love how the top comments contradict each other!! ^_^

  • Who's Leona Lewis???

  • It was ok...being a kind of pitch perfectionist, I literally cringed when he went off at some points, but overall it was good :)

  • 298 people who dislike this song or lyrics are deaf and cant read!

  • hi.

  • @indiechick909 hi :')

  • @beyondpestilence >:D aloha o;

  • @indiechick909 how are you oh and p.s. your really pretty :3

  • @beyondpestilence hahah okay xp how old r u ? O: mm mmm soo u like dis song? (:

  • i honestly believe that mr. johnny cash played this song with alot more soul

  • Trent wrote this song. So you all can... stfu.

  • Someday, I will commit suicide, and this will be the last thing I hearr. Thank you tent.

  • And Sevendust's version is the best

  • johny cashes version seems deeper and more emotionaly touching.

  • Yeah, Nine Inch Nails wrote this in 1994. Johnny Cash rewrote it in 2002. This is the original.

  • im hungry

  • @0rland0mtz I like you c:

  • @0rland0mtz damn me 2

  • @0rland0mtz I just had jack in the box... it was great. The chicken strip meal with a dr pepper :)

  • Take a listen to 'Open Up And Bleed' by The Stooges!

  • This song is really haunting. This is and always will be the best of all the versions others have done, as all originals are.

  • .. There's different, but similar energy coming from the way they both perform it and its something that you feel in your soul..Leona Lewis just sand the words, they probably didn't mean much to her. But who knows...

  • @megleee sang*

  • I like both versions for different reasons...I like Johnny's because you can feel the pain and regret in his voice over the mistakes he has made in his lifetime...I like NIN's version because its eerie in a way and he's speaking from his own dark experience..and he wrote it, so it clearly means something to him..

  • Sorry, it's the song of an old man at the end of his live, everyone he knew is already dead

  • Its song by an old man at THE end

  • What is this song about?

  • I prefer Johnny Cash's version.

  • fuck johnny cash nin forever.

  • The lyrics are great, but this song is awful. Johnny Cash's version was amazing.

  • Johnny Cash made this song sound meaningful to me. But the original versions pretty great too. RIP Johnny.

  • I honestly cried a little bit when I saw the johnny cash version of this. I like the origanal aswell but the his voice is like to quite

  • @MrJammydodger1995

Listen to it live. Its much better than the studio version and he puts alot more emotion into it.

  • i just don't like this song at all, that's my problem lollll.

  • I personally think Johnny Cash's version of this song is the best.

  • I think Trent wrote this song thinking of Johnny >.> <.<
