@italkcrab No, I play a lot of classical guitar - this piece included - and I was just commenting on his addition of more phrases than written (which is different from interpretation) and the amount of strumming (yes, that's interpretation). I'm currently a university guitar student who is taught that strumming is the devil, don't blame me. Angel Romero is EXTREMELY skilled, but that's not to say he doesn't play to the pedestrian ear. @HaZexHD That would be "you're dumb."
@karlSNESnerd What university considers strumming the devil? Resgueado is an integral part of the classical guitar lineage. Perhaps you should transfer to another school. Angel is performing, not playing an etude in a practice room to nobody. Performance is something that feeds from, and gives back to, the audience. Angel is a master and knows exactly what he's doing. His performance is appropriate, lively, and technically excellent.
@karlSNESnerd It's all good. Baroque music is supposed to be improvisational anyway. The written music is just the base from which the performance is built.
What too many people forget is that these compositions weren't sacred scriptures chiseled into granite slabs. They were the top 20 pop chart hits of their day.
Sanz, especially, was a party composer. If people sat quietly and listened with rapt attention, he was doing something wrong.
Yes it is lively dance music, but it was actualy supposed to represent the dance of the Cainary Islands (hence cainarios) which has lots of big stomping in rest spaces. The original choreography could never be performed at a goosed tempo. Not saying theres anything wrong with it.... I personaly like it fast. Just a great example of how a song can take on a life of its own long after the composer. Its an alright version, but anyone who goes to a conservatory has heard it 1000 times.
I hear different versions. I know he's repeating sum lines but there is the simplified version where the chord part you don't strum and this version where more slurs and that cool strumming parts. where can I get this version?
@JefPwnsU well i'm playing the slightly easier verison- he repeats a lots of the parts with chords as well- but mine is 2 pages long so his his probably over 4 pages im guessing
@bigape6 I disagree far from perfect. the trills are sloppy. And b4 you try and cover it up as exspressive or nuanced.... you shoudl hear other versions. everyone and their grandmother plays this song and they all goose the tempo. Go to any conservatory audion and you will here at least 2 people play this.. probably more fluid without the jerking feeling. Now the strumming section... yeah he nailed that :)
@theboywiththewires Since you are new to nylon guitar, I'll be nice. Players are free to interpret the piece as they see fit. I think you would be better off spending your time listening to robotic MIDI.
a lot of these guys like to masturbate with two hands and a guitar by playing old 1600s dance pieces 500x faster than you are supposed to. just tasteless is all.
@Rosssloth this is not a lullaby, it is a dance! People used to have lively and spanking dances back in 1600 too, especially folk dances. It's just that today we tend to think that this is cultivated music and players tend to give it different aura. At origin, Canarios is a folk dance (which Sanz only written down) and it's supposed to be played like one.
It is a masterpiece. The version that I have in my classical guitar collection book is not any of those I heard and watched on YOUTUBE. It is quite simplified. I don't really like it as much as those I've experinced on YOUTUBE.

@MrDoomfire00 Maybe a little harsh its not AWFUL... but I agree hes timing esp at the begingin on his trills is weak. There are much better version available (go to any conservatory audition) but dont exaggerate makes people not listen and you have a valid and sadly unrepresented point
""Since it's a dance piece originally wouldn't people have a hard time dancing to this tempo?""
Maybe one day you´ll understand the meaning of "fiesta" maybe that day you´ll understand that the most of spanish with blood in their veins can move their asses as fast as they want, Javier, from Canary Islands, (where this traditional song come from, and its played normally that fast)
PD: Is so weird when foreigners try to say us how we should play our traditional songs ;)
Angel is an amazing player but he ruins the piece speeding through it. Takes the charm out of it.
The repeat leading up to the rasqueado part (56 sec. in and at 1:55) is not good to my ears. I don't mind most of the other repeated parts but that is not good for me.
Since it's a dance piece originally wouldn't people have a hard time dancing to this tempo?
Again; I've admired him a long time but not here because of the tempo.
Very good point. This is not danceable. We all really admire Angel, and he´s tremendous, but you´re point made me rethink this interpretation: and the fact is, unless the dancer were spastic, had Tourette´s Sydrome and was hyperactive, I can´t visualize anyone dancing to this. You´re right: I´d never thought about it in those terms.
@LeoHareMusic yea that's what happens when the tempo of the piece isn't written on the sheet music, it becomes open to interpretation. and for those whose first encounter of the piece is the sheet music then usually it's played slower, i ten to play familiar pieces faster than those I haven't heard before but that's just a habit of mine
I think his interpretation is waaaay too fast. Canarios was originally a couples dance, and at this speed there's no way anyone could dance to it. Dances from that era were very stately, and the tempo here is anything but that. Imagine people trying dance at that tempo!
Forsooth, @lelandmax, when last I attempted to dance to this with my betrothed, my garters got in knots and my codpiece nearly falleth to the sod. The scandal was such that the other couriers hath ridden me like a pack horse for neigh on a fortnight.
Rodrigo actually improvised the Canarios. The 1st movement of that concerto also had some variations of pieces written by Gaspar Sanz. Rodrigo was a huge 'fan' of Gaspar Sanz.
I don't know what kind he's using but if you're interested in good strings, I always use GHS La Classique. I have an expensive Jose Oribe guitar and they sound great with it.
Well I liked this version too, but I'm just more used to hearing it played the right way. The author wanted it to sound one way, and we should play it that way. I know sometimes you can take out some repetitions, but I've never heard of one adding them.
He's playing a wee bit faster than he can handle. There's an unattractive edginess to his playing that a slightly slower tempo would - I hope - eliminate. BTW, are the strummed sections clearly indicated in original manuscript, or is this Angel's interpretation?
The strummed sections are clearly indicated in the original sheet music, i have the Five Pieces by G. Sanz and it's too bad that most people here play it without strumming, including even John Williams.. By the way in the original sheet music, there aren't so many repetitions, there is only one at the end of the first part, so i don't understand why people here repeat every couple of measures.. John William's version is how it should be, only, unluckily, without the strumming part.
Actually, the strumming is not at all indicated in the original five-course guitar tablature. As for the repetitions, no they were not written in, but it was common for performers of the time period to embellish the music. Creating previously undesignated repetitions was not unusual, therefore it is perfectly alright for Angel to do so.
Im talking about the flamenco-type strumming part. I have the whole suite of gaspar sanz, and im actually playing it whole. The last part canarios clearly has that strumming part. However this piece is a part of a suite, which has 5 pieces. Each of them has some repetition of some part, so it makes the whole thing pretty long. So it would be unnatural to add so much to canarios. It might be ok though having it played like this alone, but it was not intended so in a suite.
Angel is not the greatest master of the instrument but I think that he does an outstanding job in this case, in spite of the little technical difficulties. The strumming is what gives all the beauty of this piece.
wow, i mean i can play that as fast as him, but he has such an awesome way to accentuate the peice, and to the people saying its meant to be slower, on my score it says allegro lol :O
This is truly is the best rendition that I have seen of Gaspar Sanz's Canarios. The ornamentation and rasguedos (strumming) employed here are in a class by themselves. This rendition is even better than that by John Williams on this site or by Parkening on his CD. One has to be a classical guitarist or at least be learning to play one to appreciate Mr. Yepes rendition. The Baroque Guitar CD by Universal has the same recording but at a slower tempo.
Hey maybe a bit fast, but a great interp. AR can play stuff at this tempo because his is a Romero. It would be like saying Kobe is taking shots too far from the basket, who care they go in. You need boulders in your pants before you start critiqing Angel.
AR's definitely got the chops to play it even faster than this, but it sounds rushed at the beginning IMO. The strumming sounded awesome though ...I liked the 8va repeat in this transcription.
I agree, sometimes they looks like robots, but there is a soul stuck in every note. Not the noisy flamenco neither perfect machines, just exceptional humans.
if you put down the hendrix and the AC/DC, and attempted to play a piece like that, than you would understand the level of concentration and realize that the beauty of the music lies in .....the sound....of the instrument and the piece and not the amount of screaming, dancing, and crouch grabbing that you see today. pick up a classical guitar and try it out. not as easy as you might think
Actually, the entire Romero family (including Angel (the youngest son)) moved to the US in 1957 (fleeing Franco's government). He was playing in the US when he was as young as 13. That said, it probably is in Spain - although he concertized all over the world - it could be any university or concert hall.
This is by Gasper Sanz 1640 - 1710, from the province of Aragon. The piece, canarios, was published in 1674 in Zaragoza in a book he wrote about Spanish guitar technique. So yes, Spanish Baroque...
is the sheet music for his interpretation available...............

Beautiful.
The first song I learned all the way through when I was a kid.
I can't say I would outdo this version, though.

AR's definitely got the chops to play it even faster than this, but it sounds rushed at the beginning IMO. The strumming sounded awesome though ...I liked the 8va repeat in this transcription.

Those musicians are really robots of playing.
Like a machine.
beerdeddi 4 years ago
I agree, sometimes they looks like robots, but there is a soul stuck in every note. Not the noisy flamenco neither perfect machines, just exceptional humans.

if you put down the hendrix and the AC/DC, and attempted to play a piece like that, than you would understand the level of concentration and realize that the beauty of the music lies in .....the sound....of the instrument and the piece and not the amount of screaming, dancing, and crouch grabbing that you see today. pick up a classical guitar and try it out. not as easy as you might think

I like the parts he adds to the score as well as the repeated playing, it makes more exiting.

Does anyone know where or when this video was taken?
EricPinson 5 years ago
it was probably in spain, because that's where the player is from.
thecritiquevirtuoso 4 years ago
Actually, the entire Romero family (including Angel (the youngest son)) moved to the US in 1957 (fleeing Franco's government). He was playing in the US when he was as young as 13. That said, it probably is in Spain - although he concertized all over the world - it could be any university or concert hall.
curien1000 4 years ago
This is by Gasper Sanz 1640 - 1710, from the province of Aragon. The piece, canarios, was published in 1674 in Zaragoza in a book he wrote about Spanish guitar technique. So yes, Spanish Baroque...
And I love the way he plays it, a great master.
