DAMMIT!!!! Where the hell was I when they were on MTV? There's never anyone like that on there now cause MTV is a huge SHAME! It's not music television anymore. It's teen mom and I use to be fat and crap like that!
@Doitchampions - whatever. All you have to do is listen to the live 'Welcome Back my Friends.." album from '74 or '75. Palmer is constantly ahead of the beat. Listen to the first Asia album - his fills are totally mudane and sophomoric (daddy-momma, daddy-momma, etc). You compare this guy to someone like Virgil Donati and he shouldn't even play anymore...
"This Powell guy" was a hell of a drummer & an original member of (Richie Blackmore's) RAINBOW & along with doing session work on some of the finest rock ever made & guesting for other famous bands he is regarded by most as one of the top ten rock drummers of all time (& one of very few who could sit in Carl Pa;mers seat) - He Died tragically early in a car crash so RIP Cozy (a touch of respect instead of "this Powell guy") would have been nicer @somethingdiffereable !
I can just imagine the funny "Spinal Tap" stories Cozy must have been telling Greg & Keith on this tour when he finally got a break from being in bands with stonehenge foam replicas (Black Sabbath) and working for asshole/tool guitarists who owned the rights to a "hasbeen" band on it's last leg. Sad to think he's been gone now for some time.....RIP,Cozy......
Do you remember the Beatles? Not me, I'm into the Stones. Anywho, nice to share this, I got tape of King Diamond and Megadeth's MegaDave's hosting the Head Bangers Ball, but guest VJ is still an idea that can work now, but the idea music is so centered on exposure perhaps killed how to do MTV and VH1 properly today, but keeping it true to origins is best as I see it.
Cozy powell was 100 times the drummer Carl Palmer is. Palmer is the king of overplaying, can't keep time - constantly rushing the beat, fills that are void of any imagination. Terrible.
@pmfith..... Your entire statement says everything about your knowledge of drumming.
Cozy said himself said that Carl was technically superior to powell in every respect but if it came down to it then he would "Kick Carls arse in a proper Hard Rock Band context "
Lake and Emerson didn't actually HATE each other. It was more of a creative control and artistic differences. Lake wanted to go into a more commercial direction and Emerson wanted to go beyond progressive rock, hence the orchestra period that unfortunately spelled the beginning of the end for ELP
@alcatras4 Rock with orchestra or RAP, for that matter is "touch and go" in terms of effective blending and crossover. I am sticking to what I love best about particular genres and they never grow tiresome or outdated, music transcends all of that POP Culture BS!
REAL ! TALENTED! MUSICIANS! ON FUCKING MTV!?! YES KIDS THERE was A TIME,LONG,LONG AGO WHEN MTV HAD GOOD MUSIC and not sick, disgusting, queer dating shows and ridiculous 'reality' shows.MTV sucks, its a piece of 'cultural' shit, and it should be banned! ELP ARE OF THE FINEST CALIBER OF MUSICIANS,AND MTV (IN HINDSIGHT) IS LUCKY TO HAVE THEM EVER TO GRACE THE BUILDING WITH THEIR PRESENCE!! MY HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED!
@hazor777 I cannot imagine where this outrage is in terms of effecting a change, but you and me both, Rock and Roll is only true in it's most honorable shape and form and MTV is not Music TV, let's face it, it's a laugh, and sad as anything reflecting pop culture today! DAMN, I don't even know where to start a rant on this topic?!?!?!
like the way keith engages us closely with his eyes, implying maybe, that he is just ever so slightly more interesting than the other two?, haha wot a guy. they all seemed very pleasant and accessible and cozy kept it running well. greg, amazingly, seems shy!!!
The debate over who's better Palmer vs. Powell could go on forever. Palmer has definitely more chops but Powell had more power and dynamics. Powell is greatly missed, but we are still blessed to have Palmer. This what I love about YouTube ability to capture great periods of time.
Well Powell was good, and obviously talented. But I still think that Palmer is better and more talented, in terms of drumming. I just prefer his style.
@Aqualung71 - Cozy Powell was GREAT with E and L. I saw them live in the 80s around the time of this video. He brought a different sound to the band and made it heavier but with no less precision. RIP Cozy!!!
I don't see any tension between Emerson and Lake in this clip, although there has been tension between them, of course. They seem to be getting along rather well; love Emerson's "Sledgehammer" impersonation, although I'm surprised he doesn't like The Beatles--why pick one of their songs to play, then?
I don't see Keith making more of an effort than Greg, or vice-versa. I knew they didn't always get along, but didn't sense any animosity on this, and I remember watching this when it happened. JMO.
It seems to me that Keith is making an effort to get over his and Greg's differences here, but you Greg's contempt for Keith is palatable. Cozy seems to be getting along fine with both.
Thanks for this upload. The boys are so charming and hilarious. Wonderful to see. :)

Palmer couldn't make this reunion because he was playing with Asia at the time.

Oh right. I still thought Palmer was better than that other guy there.

That's Cozy Powell, and he was certainly a great drummer, just different than Palmer. (Rest his soul)

He died? Didn't know that. But I still prefer Palmer's drumming.

@AmishCake Cozy Powell rocked out harder, perhaps, with Rainbow and MSG, working with Schenker, one of the best guitarists on the planet!!
