@Khultan yep, this is my favorite song by the Monkees...well...that wasn't a Nesmith song. This song is one of the best (of many) that were written and was primarily performed by the band.
Although the way the Monkees were formed was dubious, by the time this came out they were as real as any band of that era...or, in fact, of this era. I hate when Dolenz, Tork and Papa Nez (DJ doesn't count) don't get their due.
@rutgers1961 I agree wholeheartedly. Dolenz, I was surprised to discover, was the conceptual writer/composer behind 'Randy Scoot(?) Git'. Very surprising. ♪♪
@rutgers1961 Why doesnt Davy count? I get the feeling a couple people on this thread are trying to make him the Mike Love of the Monkees...he is a reasonably talented musician who got better in time like the rest of the band...Maybe he doesnt write like Mike or Pete but lots of respected Rock Performers (like Mickey ) dont. I'm glad a few people are stepping in to credit his drumming, sorry he looked better up front and Mickey behind the drum kit but thats what the TV producers wanted
@decemberschild1217 no, DJ doesn't have the temerity to be the insufferable douchebag that Mike Love is. I feel he's lightweight compared to the others because, although a competent singer, MD and Nez were much better. Also, he was always the lead in sappy ballads and those irritating vaudvillian tunes (some of which he wrote) that were popular at the time (hey, I even have a beef with Macca for drivel like "When I'm 64", "Your Mother Should Know", "Honey Pie", etc.). cont...
@decemberschild1217 ...cont.. I don't question his drumming ability (I am aware he is the best drummer of the 4), but reasonably talented musicians are a dime a dozen (Hell, I am one) and doesn't mean all that much. I have nothing against DJ, but feel his contribution could have been done by others, whereas the other 3 were an integral part of The Monkees. Guess I'm more of a "What Am I Doin' Hangin' Round" or "Goin' Down" fan than a "Cuddly Toy" or "I Wanna Be Free" fan.
@rutgers1961 I missed this part, really? Davy Jones on percussion? I thought probably on the tambourine. Side note: check out Paul Cowsill of The Cowsills the video featuring Susan Cowsill and her rendition of The Beatles, 'When I'm 64', Paul is having the most hellish trouble with the tams.
@Khultan yah...Davy Jones is a good drummer....Mike has said in the past if the Monkees were allowed to play the instruments they were most accomplished on it would have been:
@decemberschild1217 I thought this was a reply from someone I had responded to, you're a different commentator. Really? Davy on drums? I don't think that's quite right.
@decemberschild1217 I'm a huge fan of everything Monkees-the show, their music, the film "Head". Davy can play the drums? I don't think I'd ever read that in the bios I have about them....very interesting.
i read that at their concerts in the 60s, while the monkees played this song there was a giant movie screen behind them showing films of student demonstrations. but i wasn't around back then. can anyone confirm that story?
Davy played the drums on a couple songs at the Greek last summer. He was good.

@rutgers1961 Thanks. Real cool music/song Pete came up with (of course, with his room mate contributing something in the mix)
