  • This is exporting useless junk to poor countries and not much more. It is illegal for some countries to do it, but there is no enforcement of the laws. Once again useless laws on the books that are not followed or enforced upon.

  • interesting peice check out the Ontario solution for E waste

  • Solutions, not warnings, me pa chao, eeeh

  • So why don't people use the electronic products they bought with their hard earned money as long as possible? More money could be saved for more important things such as food, houses, cars or even renewable energy investment. More 'educated' people need to learn the true meaning of 3 Rs most importantly RECYCLE instead of throwing everything to landfills...... Learn to be responsible to our own kind (humans), apart from the environment...........

  • This is an unintentionally racist video by Greenpeace. Exhaustive documentation of the WEEE import trade in Ghana shows that 85% is reused, and what is shown in the film is residue (15%) or exhausted product. Look at the video of used TVs unloaded in this very video, carefully wrapped in plastic. The video implies that everyone who goes to a hospital winds up directly at the morgue. Interview the Techs and Geeks who buy and fix this, Greenpeace.

  • fuck so they are dumping their useles shit in here and lie that they are giving charitie... fuckkkkkkk ghana needs a real fuckn president,,, not a sould out mothe fucka,,,

  • @MrMeddled :

What?! Why do you even bother to comment then?

  • @MrMeddled :

Who want to these kind of jobs? Do you ACTUALLY know how poor they are??

  • Someone wanted $75 to haul away my TV and all they said was they would dispose of it. I found a company in the city I live in who will pick it up, recycle it 100% in the United States, and make new electronics (and computers for schools) for free. You just need to look for these companies.

It is Dayton Computer Recycling for those who want to know.

  • now who allows their country to be a dump yard of retired technology? These governments need to Smart up

  • GOVERNMENTS should be the 1 who should start taking the 1st step to work out with all the manufacturers for solutions to have the waste properly recycled. No parties should just made MONEY and forget about the waste that they invented/created in the 1st place. Typical GOVERNMENTS always pushes all their waste to the poor at a very low cost, making them even poorer to do the jobs.

  • el pvc que queman de los cables vale 11 pesos el kilo

    en mexico

  • When I was in the far east, there were loads of people on the sides of the roads burning waste plactic from old PC monitor casings.

  • i love how this was made with a video camera that is soon gonna be e-waste as well

  • That is why collectors like us exist! Niagara E waste.

Check out our video in HD on our channel.

  • maybe there is the computer i used when i was kid : O

  • Mohammed Hassan - = death

  • are the green peace people mostly angry gays?

  • @paulmarado I support GreenPeace, and I have a wife and two kids. Does that make me a angry gay to you?

  • @revron77 a hippe yes

  • @failurbanik LoL thank you very much. I am aware of the situation (Replying to the definition of hippe)

  • @djshivam in fact ppl like u in Ghana, Africa is what will use u as TOILET PAPER..YES TOILET PAPAER TO WIPE OUR ASS...in fact u juat a very very sttupid being soo since is Africa if there something u can do then do it instead of sitting there critizing in..PPL EVEN YOUNGER THAN U ARE COMING TO GHANA TO GIVE THEM PROPER ENVIRONMENTAL WASTE TRAINING ..instead u are sitting here on youtube talking shit..u know something whoever u are seat behind ure pc nd talk shit one day u will get ure own..FOOL

  • maybe we will adapt to it

  • Thallium(I) compounds have a high aqueous solubility and are readily absorbed through the skin. Exposure to them should not exceed 0.1 mg per m2 of skin in an 8-hour time-weighted average (40-hour work week). Thallium is a suspected human carcinogen. For a long time thallium compounds were easily available as rat poison.

  • Main article: Thallium poisoning

Thallium and its compounds are extremely toxic, and should be handled with great care. Contact with skin is dangerous, and adequate ventilation should be provided when melting this metal.

  • In 2008 Green Peace took samples of the burnt soil in Agbogbloshie and found high concentrations of lead, mercury, thallium, hydrogen cyanide and PVC.

  • I'd like to download this video and show it to members of my community. How would I go about getting this video so that I may add it to a Powerpoint Presentation? I'd like to inform them at our next meeting.

I'd give full credit to Greenpeace, of course.

  • @Genzuiftw Google: Download youtube videos. There are sites where you can copy and paste the url and it will down load the video. Beware of installing certain softwares that may have spyware or require you to pay money.

  • so fuckin what

  • @FishTankFrank1 like your name, youre in a fish tank. you do not know about the problems that we're facing in the world.

  • horrible oye..!

  • all these people who create the computers with all this technology is being wasted and all those people's hard work go to failure

  • Among the "precious metals" like copper being extracted are heavy metals and also arsenic. Note how the adults let the kids tend the fires. The kids are literally being poisoned by this. All because Europe has a case of the NIMBYs. (NIMBY = "not in my back yard") The Africans need to tell the US, Britain, and Germany to go pound sand. Bloody hypocrites. Won't be happy until they've f-ed the environment for good. You bastards don't deserve the planet you live on - you should just go away

  • Can anyone help me arrange to take a shipping container of computer processors from Ghana? I want to start a recycling business in the UK to help the environment.

  • if only they could get unemployment insurance from obama.

  • I live in Racine Wi. and my family scraps out old computers. We keep almost everything out of the landfill! I hear everyone bitching about dumping, but, when I e-mail greenpeace and the other recyclers with the offer that we will take a container of scrap computers( long as it isen't loaded with monitors)JUST CALL ME and we'll unload your container and you can have it back without having to ship it halfway around the world!I don't even get a response! While you guys talk, we do somthin artart47@y

  • dis is soooww terrible.

  • the hypocracy...

things like this make me want to quit from the western civilization.

  • VIVA GHANA!!!!!afrika bambaataa

  • You don't need to travel to Ghana to see the abuse of Hazardous Wastes. The irish environmental authorities have been turing a blind eye to unwashed chemical containers and contaminated silage plastics being exported. This waste ends up in China and Vietnam where it ends up being washed in rivers, often by children.

    it's shocking.

  • Ghana is discusting

  • @serge421UA

    you ignorant coward

  • @donflashkizito how about you go fuck your dad some more! your probly some aids infested arfican thats y ur in their defence

  • Clearly there are several problems:

    1) Manufacturers don't make products that are easy to recycle, or use materials that don't have an impact on the environment, and keep pushing new products onto the market that we don't really need.

    2) Most consumers are not smart enough to realise that the shit they buy harms the environment. I cringe when I see people at christmas and birthday parties giving cheap plasticy gifts that are of no use and will end up in the bin.

  • omg..acid raid and air pollution bigtime lets not start they must realize the human health effects holy moly

  • Today it's all about what trainers you wear, what car you drive, how big your house is, where you shop, how much you earn, where you go on holiday. It doesn't matter that you are a shallow pretentious arsehole, because you have all these things! We don't live in 'developed' countries. Ghana was more developed centuries ago when her people lived off the land and understood and respected their environment!

  • @Glat64 - yeah, countries like the u.s. and the uk should just let other countries destroy themselves.. its a shame we evolved so fast

  • @severnmdman stupid comment of yours!!!

  • @tinotrivino -- why? its true.

  • @Glat64

is that a computer you are using to scold me, asshole?

  • @ifaranda Yes, and I shall be sure of where it goes when it comes to the end of its life, shit for brains!

  • @Glat64 You go live in your cave, I will ive in my nice house with my fridge full of food, nice vacation twice a year in a plane burning tons of jetfuel, nice shoes, sauna, bathtub, dishwasher, and what else I can buy.

  • @Glat64 What about the computer or the mobile phone you wrote this email off ? :D

  • Same old sickening story. And all because the fat cats can continue to grow fatter and line their own already stuffed pockets. The sooner we stop the way we live, and coveting material things over each other the better. That's just it though isn't it.

  • Sickening.

  • but why do they burn them? there is no way on earth to get rid of plastic. every piece of plastic ever made is still on earth today. Only way to get rid of it is to shoot it into space.

  • We don't need gomi in africa

  • You can strip the wire & get a higher price. Unburned copper fetches a higher price by 1/3 & the plastic wire casing can also be recycled & sold.

  • liphookaidforghana.wmv

  • why are they talking like they have no idea that its ghanians who bring in these crap,i live in italy and you only have to go to the various dump yards, and you see ghanians at the gates begging to collect these things.there should be laws against this if its causing harm to our people.God bless Ghana.

  • Im keeping my crt monitors until they break.

  • its sad to know that these "developed" countries always find new ways to enslave "developing" countries

funny thing though is how quick they are to point out other countries' faults and how they are killing people when they are causing people to suffer and die slow painful deaths from illnesses they dont know and can't diagnose

  • this is sick we need to stop

  • The trade is about 25% "waste", and 75% good. The "expert" is talking nonsense. The evidence is right here in the video (look at what is being unloaded from the container), but more importantly there is no way for an African to pay $10000 to import "mostly waste" (the container shipment alone can run $7000). Greenpeace, love your whaling work, but get your facts straight.

  • that dose not happen in ghan want to now why im from ghana acrra

  • Comment removed

  • dude speak english nobody understand u

  • wellll.... either we bury them in landfills or these people attempt to recycle them. No other options... Maybe they could at least wear facemasks to filter particulate matter.

  • try to explain this to a bunch of 9th graders very hard.

  • INDEED

  • why teh hell my comment removed??? :@ i got some idea..

  • maybe build a factory with the best chimney filters....

  • Burning those things can cause severe air pollution and can cause cancer..long term. Never burn any plastic.

  • @jalexrosh no way it doenst cause severe air pollution because its not a factory neither a high industry its just people.. the problem is indeed the cancer!!!!!

  • @jalexrosh blow it out youre ass.

  • @MajKong101 Know what? your mom should be slapped for letting you use her computer!

  • @jalexrosh Being is that I served 13 years in the Marine corps you're little insult made me laugh a little.Cause all I know is that your'e one of those guys being poisoned by this kind of Greenpeace bullshit.I mean really all I care about is MY country, not some backwoods country halfway around the world in Africa.

  • @MajKong101 Go finish school and get proper education instead of fooling around in your parents basement.

  • @jalexrosh See you people can't stop.Your persistent and never give up even though you really have no voice in how the world runs,or for that matter how I run.

Have you even seen my job description?Yeah I didn't get that job sitting on my ass all day.You are kinda funny though.

  • @MajKong101 You idiot,I advice law makers and policies and our country is turning to change more green and clean. We also dont have fools like you working anywhere but at the janitor's! And youre pathetic however, whatever, whenever. You gotta loser thing going on. Dont lose it,suits you so well!

  • @MajKong101 Job description, who cares you idiot,in two decades you will be standing in a queue for rice soup thanks to you and more idiots like you who live like pigs.

  • @MajKong101 HAHAHAHA job description,my dog has a better one and he gets better benefits. ROFL

  • @MajKong101 You shaved asses in the marine corps,Good thats nice. What did they pay you? three pongs a day?

  • @jalexrosh You shut your'e fucking hole.I've achieved more than you ever will. The marine corps didn't pay well but hey I actually BENEFITED my country not sit on my ass all day and bitch about the environment or some mud hut in Africa. My job currently actually pays very well,I am not a janitor as you say,I am apart of a group that designs the ''future'' military vehicle. And I know deep down that my design may help our country win the war were in right now,and that my friend feels pretty good.

  • @MajKong101 You've achieved a retarded brain, thanks to all the lead from the chinese plates your mom gave you food in.You think I take you for a real adult? You dont even have the I.Q of a 1 year old and you seriously think someone would cry and shout about the BIG JOB they're havin? Pray there comes a time when they actually can transplant brains cause yours is all fused! And youre getting quite an audience now with all the guys here at lunch, keep on entertaining us.7 guys ROFL here now.

  • @jalexrosh I really thought about what I said in my first comment,It spawned this HUGE argument over what? The idiot next to me sent me the link to some other Greenpeace vid and well I looked into this.I said what I said because I don't like environmentalists.I didn't realize it would spark such a huge argument. We've shared our insults to each other and it's gotten kinda old yet still kinda funny. You can continue with this thing if you want but you will hear no reply from me.

    Semper fi I guess

  • @jalexrosh The thing about my mom.I never had a mother even, she died giving birth to me.Just me and my dad,I joined the marine corps to get away from all the hell at home.He was always drunk,my home was always thrashed,he didn't ever talk to me.Then a month after I joined he died in a car accident.Hell I don't even know the purpose of this whole argument, are we tryin to prove somthin? Will we ever even if we are?Hell you're my age even. You sounded like some bitchy 20 year old.this isn't worth it.

  • @MajKong101 I'm sorry for what happened in your life,I really am. I apologise for what I said if that hurt you. But then again,I started cause you ignited the fire with a rude response to my comment. You have your views,I have mine. Let it be. By the way I run a farm also and I see what is happening, the changes. Its global. Talk about the Butterfly effect. Peace.

  • @MajKong101 Dum vivimus, vivamus

  • @MajKong101 your mother died hoping she could kill you because she didnt want to raise an ignorant bastard ( that was harsh im sorry but you get my point)

  • @llamahamfat Saw youre profile.Just another activist.

    Sigh.

    So sad.

  • @MajKong101 hahaha dont try to make me feel bad... go read my previous message.

  • @llamahamfat What was that?

  • @MajKong101 sigh.

  • @llamahamfat sigh.

  • @llamahamfat I don't try to make you feel bad,I just addressed you're major malfunction,being an activist.

  • @MajKong101 here does it say im an activist? im not trying to change the ways of society by commenting over youtube LOL i was merely stating my opinion...isnt that what the comment section is for?

  • @llamahamfat No you said something about my mother. Not an opinion, you're just being a total douche bag.

  • @MajKong101 i totally agree with you

  • @MajKong101 typical american (marine to be more specific) you brainwashed faggots have been taught to think your the best. you think nothing else matters but guess what bitch your nothing without the natural world. everything you depend on to live depends on the environment. i think ur army officer raped u up the ass too much.

  • @jalexrosh Dude , its Africa , here ppl have imp shit to worry about , like FOOD . cancer for them is amongst the other 10000000 things that kill them everyday .

  • @djshivam There might be problems other than what I said, But what you forget is that a small thing there seemingly can be a big problem for us in the place where we live. Something like the butterfly effect. The poison that's thrown there will come to us all through the water and via the seas. It will find its way back t us.

  • @jalexrosh thanks bro i'll let these guys know

  • @jalexrosh it's called hunger..

  • @jalexrosh Who cares. It is just Africa. Why worry about it? They all die, Glorious West can get all materials and dump waste. Win win situation. Had this been about Zuid-Afrika(only good African country)I would be far more worried.

What we should do is remove all gold, silver, platinum and aliminium that can be easily recovered from this garbage. Let them have the plastic.

  • @lesleyhenriquez Its not just you or me or some other country, But its we, us and our only home the planet. Countries are specific to politicians who thrive on our blood and sweat!

  • Anyone ever watch the hit TV show "Dirty Jobs." Here it is folks, reality. Just remember the American cities during the industrial revolution.> they were shit-holes.

*If they want to solve their problem, how about they actually repair their "second hand computers" and create a more intelligent, connected Ghana.

Lets face it, this is a very real problem, but the market driven approach is a far more proactive method than simply complaining like Greenpeace.

  • these people have no money how can they fix the pcs they are starving ffs

  • Stuuuuuupid! Figure out a better way FFS

  • Shit i already figured out a better way! Crush all the components into a powder/granules, use water to separate the heavy metals from the lighter plastic

  • Electronic waste in Ghana has positive and negative effects. The positive effect that these electronic machines came from Europe and South America to Ghana then they can fix it and use it in thier schools also they can do for the machines a recycle process to use them again, but he negative effects such as it pollute the air and it effects the health. Also there is a security risk because they can buy hard disks from the open souqs & they can find many personal information and very secret info.

  • What can we do to stop this. I can't believe what iam seeing.

  • Force all computer companies to pay for the cleanup.HP,DEll,etc and and send steve jobs there to show him his toxic product.

  • stop buying electronic goods.

  • move in to cave.

  • dude suck a dick ok

  • We could blast it all out into space instead.

  • The complain about the e-waste BUT they make money out of it. It would be better, if they do not accept the e-waste, so the Western world is forced to dispose their waste itself.

Possible solution to this prolbem: Buy good quality products and think about what you realy need! Try to use electronic devices as long as possible.

  • ya know it is kinda stupid burn it before you try to sell old parts i would wanna go there one year to take all cases and other usable parts and sell them to other buyers

  • Wow, I never notice where all the electronic stuff have gone to. I mean I thought they recycle it but WUT?!?! Africa, China, India? What is the Western contries doing?

I mean usually I try to fix a old item before dumping it, but these humans are too much.

  • Well, it's got to go somewhere. Better there than here.

  • Comment removed

  • Sgtsesamestreet i dont even need to point out that your a retard, but ill do it anyway. your a retard!

  • Hmm. Ok. Now go burn my old videocard and motherboard...thanks.

  • your most welcome mate- everything to save the earth :)

  • very selfish talk.. do u think global warming will only hit there????

  • Yes, I suppose I talk like this because Global Warming is *real* , but it is a natural cycle. Just like the ice age. If it gets really cold, then it must get really hot. Think about it.

  • fuck you!! them...

  • Suppose you wouldn't mind doing this then...

  • Dumping e-waste in west africa prohibits small comanies growth in Germany recycling worn out equipment, . Here we have the tech to protect workers health&the enviroment but no gigant profits can be reaped from it!

Waste is the prime criminal market: just look at Italy (government+naples).

    :(

  • I remember one report about Apple using flash memory instead of hard disk drives for their products as an environment friendly because hard disk are not easily recyclable. I am going to try and buy more flash USB drives and less hard disk drives in the future.

  • this is the humans races fault

  • very true.

  • dragonflynv886, it is the effect of a cause and those behind the cause are those who have POWER. Check the definition of Power yourself.

It is their purpose to destroy life. Connect the dots.

  • Is this Bush's fault, too?

  • did anybody say it was. you cant accuse ppl of accusing bush for things when you were the one who blamed bush.

  • you FORGOT CANADA

even fucking greenpeace doesnt give a fuck abotu canada

  • The problem isnt the fact that they are coming in, its the fact that there arent many means to safely get rid of the actual waste. The large slums that people thrive on second hand selling. Honestly though pollution this bad is isolated... And i would know because i've been to that exact location. The area in that video is only there because they have around 40thousand people who dont want to to move so it can be cleaned developed. The slum is actually completely surrounded by developed city.

  • Thanks Greenpeace for uploading vid!

    This is trully sad.

  • The Solution is "Fair Trade". Like Fair Trade Coffee was better than the coffee boycott. fairtraderecycling works with the buyers of used equipment (who can't afford new) and makes sure you are sending what they can use. "Zero Export" makes it worse, they have to buy the PCs from back alley junk dealers who mix in "Toxics Along for the Ride". Refusing to ship good stuff is as bad (or worse) than willingess to ship bad stuff.

  • Why are we surprised? the more things change, the more they stay the same. until the Afrikan continent stop allowing these imperialistic dogs to contaminate our ancestral homeland, this mess will continue. death to all imperialistic, parasitic and capitalistic pigs, may they be wiped off the planet swiftly.

  • @NubianGoddez the prblem is you and me are imperialist too because we are consumers...

    the problem is the banks!!!!

  • ohh myyy!!!! this is....the worst thing! >S

  • We just bought a new computer for our relatives as our old (1998) Acer at 5 Gigabytes couldn't even hold the newest operating system (XP). So we have a new computer(2005) ..200 GB an "old" one at 5 GB which now is very obsolete..not worth upgrading to more memory as "old" memory chips are not available anymore..would cost several hundred dollars to upgrade & still may not hold a current Operating system.what to do? When the whole system fails out it goes. The legacy of a throwaway society.

  • It is time to put the unemployed and under employed to work repairing the environment of the planet.

Trawling in the plastic patch to be properly recycled, making the deserts bloom with reforestation, building sustainable power sources, building sustainable fisheries , and working in organic sustainable agriculture.

DO it now people or this place is lost in 100 years.

  • Three minutes and five seconds into the video, they are clearly importing good and repairable TVs, just as economics would dictate. This demands a fair trade solution, making sure that the computers and TVs are decent, ie worth more as a working unit than as metal (obsolete fail that)

  • Two thirds of the electronics exported to Africa are repairable and working. This demands a "Fair Trade" solution, not a "boycott". Korea and Taiwan started the same way, this is how electronics engineers grow up. Don't export junk. Do export working and repairable computers.

  • Did you watch the entire video? "Working and repairable computers" can still be obsolete, which means that the metals contained within them will still be more valuable to the scavengers than the value of putting together a cheap computer. I asked if you watched the whole video because it sort-of addresses that issue. Also, there are few facilities for aspiring engineers to do anything--but plenty of opportunity for kids to dig through toxic trash to get metals and at least eat once in a while.

  • Specifically, 2/3 are imported for reuse and repair, as is legal under Basel Convention Annex IX. 3:05 seconds into the video, for example, they are clearly filming used TVs that are not economical to burn for copper, but look fairly new. 1/3 bad/obsolete is uneacceptable, but it demands a Fair Trade solution, not exaggeration and misrepresentation.

  • Very soon our planet will wither from our (the west's, the north's, the 1st world) consumer lifestyles. As other countries "develop" and copy the ways of USA and Europe mother nature WILL die and us along with her....

  • In Hungary the gipsys doing same, just they stolen the wires and electronic things.

  • Let's just stop consuming useless stuff. One computer can last for ages if well used. Boycott microsoft. Switch to linux.

  • im doing a big ewaste project in english, this helped

  • We fail.

  • Lol XD

Although this is no laughing matter (this crisis)the comments:

    -This is terrible

    -This is terrible

    -This is great

LOL :D I knew someone was going to do that. But I'm assuming that person meant this is a good video, but a terrible amtter, and I agree. Thank-you for trying to promote being green and posting this (CNN has a really good video about e-pollution too).

  • :D this is great

  • this is terrible

  • this is terrible

  • oh no....

  • guitarskilltrees

  • why dont they attempt to repar the electronics and sell them

  • These vids make me think about a documentary I saw: Manufactured Landscapes. It is quite impressive to see how huge can be a mountain of telephones, or a plain of microchips. You can see some houses built into that crap, and kids playing in it like you played on the grass in your childhood. Really worth watching, after that for sure one will think twice before wasting sth that can be recycled.

  • If I had the chance to meet the people in this video,I will say to them 'Keep importing the stuff but burn them under control conditions and direct all the fumes into the atmosphere'

After all the whole world will suffer, not just Africans. If Europe beleive they are taking advantage of these people, they are wrong...Heavier budgets on greener alternative why Africa Pollutes the Air with Europes Hypocrisy.lol lol lol Ripple effect

  • Jesus christ, cant people recycle it in correct and proper way? This is not only ruining the health but also the environment.

I think manufacturer should recycle their own products and stop dumping e-waste to poor country.

if really want to donate, donate new or usable computer / electronic to the ppl in the poor country.

We live on the same planet, breahting the same air and drinking the same water.

    Pls Think Green.

  • Yes but these people aren't the only people who are part of the problem. They are simply trying to make a living. You and I are also responsible for this. I watched a video that showed people trying to recycle their electronics, instead they are imported to places like this.

  • actually we dont all drink the same water and breathe the same air. I live in Portland, Oregon. Great air, and Im doing fine. Plus, why is the blame all on developed nations, why cant we ALSO blame the importing countries. If they think its a problem, STOP IMPORTING!!!!

  • Often, recycling e-waste is the most profitable activity these individuals have. For them it's another meal and it sure beats getting nothing....

  • As usual: the poor ones must pay the ultimate price! That's bad!

  • Very true

  • ouch that sucks in third world countries, at least they die of other stuff before they get old enough for cancer... well thats not good either

  • I once met three Ghanaians in Itaewon, Seoul, and they said they were scrap metal dealers buying old computers in Korea and shipping them back to Ghana. One guy told me he did two shipments a month, of several cargo containers (that's HUGE) of this garbage.
