Ok so what's the point? are you saying buying a bulb containing mercury is like abusing you're partner? I know that these bulbs are not good for the planet but what do you think about leds? solar ovens? can we make no progress towards sustainability through technology?
The eco-system is quite a nasty and unpleasant place. There is no mercy in it, and not even any pity.
Humans make-believe that justice can exist, despite all evidence to the contrary. Damn it I'm not willing to give up that piece of make-believe, and if it takes killing the planet to progress humanity to the point where justice can exist, so be it. No great loss.
@Jcolinsol You DO understand, of course, and I'm almost embarrassed to point out this rather obvious bit of reality, that your life actually depends on your ecosystem, don't you?
wikipedia: Jensen says that he sees civilization to be inherently unsustainable and based on violence. He argues that the modern industrial economy is fundamentally at odds with healthy relationships, the natural environment, and indigenous peoples. .... Accordingly, he exhorts readers and audiences to help bring an end to industrial civilization. this man is much more intelligent and creative then myself, but to truly rally behind these ideas appears to be pure ideology. How can it not?
Nothing last forever. Including planets. Our one drive, right or wrong, is the perpetuation of the species. In the big picture, it is only technology and industrial advancement that will allow us to find another habitable planet to ensure the perpetuation of our species.
@velveetaslingshot That's highly unlikely. The closest star system to our solar system is 4 light-years away, which means you'd have to travel for 4 years at the speed of light to reach it. Currently we have nothing that will even come close to those kind of speeds, it would take millions of years to travel there. And even if we had that kind of tech, only the elite would have access to it. You and your family would be left behind to rot on this dying planet, I guarantee you that.
@johan404 Nah, I'll be fine. I've been communicating with the Dalarians of Altair 4 for about ten years now. They are totally going to hook me and my family up!!!!
Most people/ the dominant culture are fully aware of at least one big picture, perhaps even two or three, most certainly the 'A. Gore' picture. (I never saw it) Even then, they choose to ignore or perhaps choose to make a few changes with regards to any big picture, rather than choose a more obvious option and that is to passionately care for the natural world as Derrick Jensen has done for what seems like forever.
i don't think they do see the big picture, christine
for example, if a corporation pollutes, my experience is that most people think that that is a 'bad' corporation, not that that corporation's actions are the logical outcome of a system that is based on exploitation
i don't think the answer is as simple as 'derrick jensen cares and other people don't'

@MilesD3
Theoretically. But that doesn't mean we can't improve upon it.

Dear Pennilesscriple,
Sorry for asking, but where did I state that 'Derrick Jensen cares and other people don't"?
Just a comment.
Thank you.

Derrick Jensen's last comment about make believing that we may kill a planet and live on it too, is so sad, but soo true!
Christinecedar 2 years ago 5
yeah christine that is a very common belief
i want to figure out how to get people to see how ludicrous it is--they can't see the big picture
let me know if you have any insights

Dear Pennilesscripple,

but i don't know what the answer is
