Mike, this is Heather (Raposofan) posting. Thank you so much for having posted this. When I was a kid, I took this clip so seriously: "Film is magic. And this is a film, so you can be magic for three minutes." Those words stuck with me. I never forgot them.
I am watching this clip now, tonight, because I'm directing my first feature film, and today I reserved the great big camera at Panavision for the shoot!
I owe this segment. It taught me film was magic. And it is.
@johnnyboy8593 You still can. I wanted to do, and today, I am. Go out and get a real movie camera, and order some film stock from Kodak. It's not expensive.
let me tell you something,i was the sesame street generation.i started watching in 1969 and continued watching thru the 70s, they may have shown alot of these clips up through the 80s, but i can assure you i'm an original sesame st. viewer.thank you for posting though, great preschool primer.
I've always loved this film too! Thanks for posting it! In case anyone's interested, the name of the banjo tune used in the background is "The Pony Express". It's a wonderful old bluegrass classic. I play the banjo myself!
Do you, by any chance, have the Sesame Street segment
You Need A Bridge? It shows bridges around New York City and contains a breathtaking joe Raposo score; along with a nice narration: "Sometimes when you want to get somewhere, you need a bridge.' If so, could you post it?
No one seems to have written anything about the inconsistency of the kids' clothing. On the beach they have sweaters, but in the woods they are dressed differently - except the boy at the very first has his sweater, when they run to the fountain (backs to the camera). Also, the girl, in a closeup has her sweater off after her first beach scene (1:40, with the horse).
Well, being the girl in the scene, I think that it was simply filmed in bits. I don't recall anyone fussing about whether my clothing was consistent. The only thing I remember was being annoyed that the birds didn't fly backwards as I had been told they would.
I really am. The indirect thanks goes not to me but to my father, who made the film. He made several others for sesame street including "Milk" and "I'm a workin' dog".
OH JOY!!!!! I'VE BEEN WAITING TO FIND THIS VIDEO FOR SOOOOOO LONG!!! The banjo music I think holds the whole segment together!! Plus the children's commands! God bless Sesame Street for creating this!! GREAT TO BE WITH IT AGAIN!!
I'm going by when I recorded this sometime in 1986. They aired it until about 1988 or 1989. Sesame Street went through a huge transformation after that and quit airing old classic Sesame Street skits. I know because I painfully watched until 1993.
Another Sesame Classic from my childhood. I loved this and how the kids seemed to have control over the animals and things. I never heard of Deliverence until a few years ago. I think I was just a young child when it came out.
Like the description says, nice banjo music! This film and the sand letter series were perhaps the two memories I have of Sesame Street in the 1970's in which banjo music was employed.
Thanks for telling me! I've had "Deliverance" soundtrack for years (vinyl album then CD) and I've NEVER noticed it before! I remember hearing Dueling Banjos when I was a very little kid. I was 4 years old when Deliverance came out. The main reason why I never noticed before was mostly because I listen to only two songs on the CD: "Dueling Banjos" and "End of a dream". Thanks again for the info.
As an early Gen-Xer, I was among Sesame Street's first viewers, and yes, I remember this clip VERY well! The slow-motion and stop-action imagery with that amazing banjo-pickin' made this clip unforgettable! Thank you, mstatz, for posting this! A classic!
hey wasnt there a film where a guy says to another guy "how did u do that?" and the other guy says "do what?" and the guy that says "do what" walks backwards and unfries an egg back into its shell?.
Yes, there is! It's called 'Do You Know What Backwards Means?' and it's on YouTube. The reason I'm so pleased to respond to your post is that it's one of my favorites - groovy electronic score second to none!
wow, thanks alot for telling me that, i just watched it and i couldnt believe i was seeing this again, hehe. Now there is just 1 more thing,, i remember seeing a film and it showed 2 guys throwing spaghetti in their mouths like they were eating like hogs,,lol. It showed them sitting next to each other at a table and i think they were using their hands to eat.
KidAJonni: I'm sure you're referring to 'Everybody Eats,' sung by Joe Raposo, which I saw again, for the first time in years, a little while ago. Meat and fish and cereal, carrots, peas, and beets! Oh, those memories!
Obviously filmed various parts of Nassau County, Long Island. The beach is clearly Jones Beach (its famous tower can be seen a few times), and during the jumper's freeze you can see Nassau University Medical Center in the distance. The park is most likely Eisenhower Park, very near there.
That's very interesting!! I'm 38 and I'm the guy who posted this. I was born and grew up in southern N.H. but in the early 70's (probably only 2 or 3 years after this was filmed) my dad used to take us to Long Island to visit my grandparents and my uncle, who used to live there. I was only 3 to 5 years old but I remember it. And...we use to go to Jones Beach!
Great. But remember there was some other message that folowed after the word STOP appeared on the screen. Don't know why in later years SS did those things.
When this clip was shown on 'Noggin' in one of the 1970 episodes (the one where Oscar puts STOP signs up all over), it ended just about where it does here, but with, after "STOP," the additional words on the screen "...SO I CAN LOOK AT YOU."

I wouldn't be surprised if that were Pete Seeger playing the banjo. He's appeared on Sesame Street before.
