SF Opera tried to mount Mephistofele for Pavarotti. They suspected he might cancel so they hired James Morris who could sing almost anything. Slatinaru was the soprano. Big P did cancel and was replaced by Giacomini. That's how I came to see Giacomini and Slatinaru in Tosca. She was the best Tosca I ever heard live.
