Actuallly the iron shoes on pavement is WAAAAYYY worse than being barefoot.... the iron vibrates the bones inside the leg causing them to be weaker.... there is less vibration with no shoes but if your going on a pavement road its best to try and ride on the side where theirs grass/gravel/dirt/... but if you MUST ride on pavement its best to prepare and but on boots on your horse... the boots cause the least vibrations... proof? look up " horse hoof touchdown " and see the comparisons......
If you're going to be the girl who rides a horse to Sonic just because she can, could you at least ride down my street so I can collect some horse shit for my garden?
She can choose to wear a helmet or not. If her horse were to spook and if she knows how to fall correctly it won't be a problem but it was vise versa then were talking trouble.
I would love to ride a horse in my neighborhood full of snobs and prudes! the area used to be a pig farm but thats to debasing for those sniveling creeps. JAJAJA I would love to see the cop write the ticket.
I used to do this with my first Quarter Horse mare....after riding her in our town's Memorial Day Parade, I would ride her home. Then we would trailer her back to the barn...No one ever said anything to me about it.
Right.. So if a car comes too fast and spooks you're horse, you're gonna fall off and hit you're head on that concrete, then you'll get brain damage and possibly die or be paralysed from the fall! That's why riding hats were invented;)
@WhiteForestEquine only if you run them on concrete for long periods of time, and i rode with a large group on asphalt walking for short periods isnt bad
@countrybabe561 yes they can acctually, many horses find it more comforting because the metal isnt smacking the hard ground and they have more traction
When you said 'Town' I was expecting traffic and shops not just a normal road. It's obviously different in America. But yeah wear a hat, JUST in case your horse decides not to obey the 25mph speed limit ;)
You can't ride a bike in town( where i live, Soldotna Alaska) so if there is a law that you have to wear a helmet on a bike i am ssure it aplys to horses, i see people ride their horses outside city limits all the time on their horses, not with helmets but the law only applys in the limits.

If you think about the person being with you thing. @neighinthenight567 , i went to a mac donald´s drive through by horse and by pony, but the manager told me i should not do it again..althought we were wel served by all.

It's illegal to be on the street w/o a helmet or seatbelt (seatbelt for car, helmet for motercycles ect.). Believe me...you do not want to fall off your horse unto that road.
@SuperCritterz I'm not sure what it's like in the US, which is where she's from, but I know up here in Canada you don't have to where a helmet if you're over 18 :]
Thats idiotic..You should wear a hat even when you go and catch your horse, and ride it up to the stable bare-back! You should wear a helmet at ALL Times! :D xx
@benjimypal21 that just proves your very naive, even if you haven't hurt yourself so far, doesn't mean you won't ever have a serious fall, even just in walk!

I live in amish country. We always ride to town. LOL. However were I use to live I was told that if I rode my horse to town then I must clean up after him. Keep riding
Its not illegal.Your horse is considered a way of transportation. With that being said I believe the only thing they could yell at you for is being on the sidewalk. We ride our horses all over the nearby roads. If you not going to wear a helmet what you need to at leased wear is reflective clothing either on you or on your horse, preferably both. A friend of mine was riding on the road one time and almost got hit by car because they didn't see her coming over a hill. Stay Safe and have fun!
Where I am (southern California) it's not illegal. My horse wouldn't do well, but I once watched some people haul into my neighborhood, tack up, get on, and take off down the street. You just can't ride on most of the beaches.
where i live you cant go anywhere "in town"! there is no town really but a cop is always by the side of the rode and one time i sat backwards in my saddle and he just looked at me like i was crazy!!!! ps: i am!!!!
Rofl Me and my little bay pony ride through town all the time.. I don't know if it's illegal or not.. Have yet to pass the cop car IN town. But it's one of his favorite things. <3 He knows all his routes and loves to say hi to people. And if I have one of my friends ride with me we can even make trips to the corner store! :D Or vet if I need to get some de-wormer or something of the like (Just on the other side of the town... It's a small town). xD
Please wear a helmet. My best friend is now learning how to do everything for herself again after her horse tripped and launched her onto the road. For a long time, we thought that she wasn't going to live. So please, put one on and keep safe.
@kooki85 she doesnt have to wear a helmet if she doesnt want too, seriously every horse rider including me knows the risks that could happen, you can never trust a horse no matter how much you no them, but its the risk you take i mean i sometimes dont wear a helmet when i do a full gallop, i never wear body protecters because they are just too restrictive, so please dont be bossy
@zebezebra90 I'm not being bossy. I'm just pointing out the danger of not protecting yourself. It's stupid and it's selfish not to wear a helmet. It doesn't even have to be expensive if it fits properly.
Spare your family and friends the horror of sitting at your bedside wondering if you're ever going to wake up. My friend's personality has changed vastly, and she likely will not recover fully.
It's an awful thing to watch and it could have been avoided.
@zebezebra90 It's illegal to ride any horse without a proper helmet, no matter where you are. I think the only exception is in professional dressage. Kooki85 is definitely not being bossy, so excuse her for trying to save this girls life by telling her what's good for her.
And honestly I wouldn't blame her for being 'bossy' as you put it, since her BEST FRIEND could have DIED. I'm not the only one ready to admit that I would have posted that same comment too if any of my friends had done that.
@GainingBananas It's not illegal I know if your 18 you can and western is without a helmet almost all the time and if you go some where you sign a wavier saying you wont wear one (and eventing, show jumping, and schooling shows you are required) but she can legally ride without a helmet (unless the law says other wise) and yes I wear my helmet and I did actually have a horrible fall without a helmet and I'm happy to be ok but it's nice to ride without one and the fall was with someone else horse
@a2zhandi You can't just say "Don't fall off" because you don't CHOOSE to fall off, it happens whether you like it or not, and you're not always in a position to choose how you land either. I know you can't say "You MUST wear a helmet" but she's not being bossy about it so why has everyone got such a big problem with this? She's advising the girl to wear a helmet and giving a pretty good reason to as well. She's trying to convince her, she's not forcing her.
@GainingBananas I've had several falls off horses. I was actually left in a tree holding the saddle when my arabian mare decided she was going home.
I've slipped in the mud my ma told me to run the horse around a barrel. While she assured me the horse I was on has never been known to fall. haha. WE fell!
You should be aware/ alert 100% of the time. And prepared to take action to what ever comes.
@a2zhandi for instance, I was running my horse down the trail one day. And there was this little creek I expected to just run through. Well she didn't want to get her feet wet. And didn't tell me she was jumping over it !
As usual, I'm prepared for anything at any given time.
You can't be off in la la land. Or your bound to get hurt. Shit happens..
@a2zhandi I know exactly what you mean, but you can't always be prepared for what's coming, so you should really take precautions. Horses are dangerous animals, full stop. As soon as you're in the same room as one, you're in danger. I was stood in front of a bombproof little pony about a year ago and she just casually bit me for no reason. Most people would rather be safe than sorry, and don't want to end up in a coma because they didn't wear one more bit of basic equipment to save their life.
@Thehorsebabe99 I don't know about the states, but in the UK you just leave it and it gets washed away in the rain :) It's common in the Uk to ride through residential areas, most folks wouldn't give it a second glace :') x
In UK its perfectly normal and allowed, after all, horses used the roads before any cars or lorries!! I think you legally have to wear a hat if you're on the road here though, not sure about USA or anything.
Haha maybe in some states. I see his ears are forward. Try playing with the reigns with your fingers just to make sure his ears are not backward, but facing you. This will remind him that there is a rider on his back :) Our weight is snothing so sometimes they tend to...forget lol.
hHahaha, it's good. Where I live, you see people riding there horses around town all the time. One time, I rode mine to a coffee shop after a rodeo. It's the best :)
Of course we have rules. We have to stay 15 feet from the road and must clean up messes on public property. (you know how they have doggy bags to pick up poo? They have people who give out free horse bags to attach to the saddle and catch poo as it comes XD) and we can't ride on private property, nothing to bad! GO HORSE RIDERS!
Haha I questioned my rights to ride into town on horseback as well. I did it anyways and soon other horse riders were doing it too. I do NOT live in a small town but I couldn't believe it when they started putting hitching posts in front of grocery stores and buildings. Many fast food restaurants made covered areas to order food from horseback! it's not uncommon to see people riding back from a store with bags now!!! Wow!!!!
Eh, I rode down the footpath of a main rode in the middle of a neighbourhood? :P I don't see why they shouldn't be rode in a neighbourhood, as long as they are not a danger to anybody. :P
There is just the matter of cleaning up after your horse. Dogs must be on leashes and cleaned up after so it makes sense they'd have to regulate having control and cleaning up after your horse. It's easier in some places to just ban it since most people wouldn't get off and scoop behind their horses and carry it. :P I wish I could just ride a horse short distances instead of a car, though, or take my dog into more places with his back pack to help shop.
helmet?

A friend of mine was riding on the road one time and almost got hit by car because they didn't see her coming over a hill. Stay Safe and have fun!

Here in Oregon horses actually have the right of way. I believe it's like that in most of the country, but I'm sure there are exceptions.
Thereisonlythetruth 2 months ago
Where I am (southern California) it's not illegal. My horse wouldn't do well, but I once watched some people haul into my neighborhood, tack up, get on, and take off down the street. You just can't ride on most of the beaches.

So please, put one on and keep safe.
kooki85 3 months ago 83
@kooki85 she doesnt have to wear a helmet if she doesnt want too, seriously every horse rider including me knows the risks that could happen, you can never trust a horse no matter how much you no them, but its the risk you take i mean i sometimes dont wear a helmet when i do a full gallop, i never wear body protecters because they are just too restrictive, so please dont be bossy
zebezebra90 2 months ago
@zebezebra90 I'm not being bossy. I'm just pointing out the danger of not protecting yourself. It's stupid and it's selfish not to wear a helmet. It doesn't even have to be expensive if it fits properly.
Spare your family and friends the horror of sitting at your bedside wondering if you're ever going to wake up. My friend's personality has changed vastly, and she likely will not recover fully.
It's an awful thing to watch and it could have been avoided.
kooki85 2 months ago
@zebezebra90 It's illegal to ride any horse without a proper helmet, no matter where you are. I think the only exception is in professional dressage. Kooki85 is definitely not being bossy, so excuse her for trying to save this girls life by telling her what's good for her.
And honestly I wouldn't blame her for being 'bossy' as you put it, since her BEST FRIEND could have DIED. I'm not the only one ready to admit that I would have posted that same comment too if any of my friends had done that.
GainingBananas 2 months ago
@GainingBananas It's not illegal I know if your 18 you can and western is without a helmet almost all the time and if you go some where you sign a wavier saying you wont wear one (and eventing, show jumping, and schooling shows you are required) but she can legally ride without a helmet (unless the law says other wise) and yes I wear my helmet and I did actually have a horrible fall without a helmet and I'm happy to be ok but it's nice to ride without one and the fall was with someone else horse
ohmyhi 2 months ago
@ohmyhi So if you agree with her, why the hell were you arguing and calling her bossy?!
GainingBananas 2 months ago
@GainingBananas kooki isn't responsible for saving anybodies life. Who does she think she is? The government? haha
I've NEVER worn a helmet. DON'T FALL OFF. And if you do, you'd better be prepared to land. So you don't bump your noggin!
It's NOBODIES business to tell ANYBODY what they MUST or MUST NOT do!
Otherwise, you leave the free society and enter dic-tater-shit!
a2zhandi 2 months ago
@a2zhandi You can't just say "Don't fall off" because you don't CHOOSE to fall off, it happens whether you like it or not, and you're not always in a position to choose how you land either. I know you can't say "You MUST wear a helmet" but she's not being bossy about it so why has everyone got such a big problem with this? She's advising the girl to wear a helmet and giving a pretty good reason to as well. She's trying to convince her, she's not forcing her.
GainingBananas 2 months ago
@GainingBananas I've had several falls off horses. I was actually left in a tree holding the saddle when my arabian mare decided she was going home.
I've slipped in the mud my ma told me to run the horse around a barrel. While she assured me the horse I was on has never been known to fall. haha. WE fell!
You should be aware/ alert 100% of the time. And prepared to take action to what ever comes.
a2zhandi 2 months ago
@a2zhandi for instance, I was running my horse down the trail one day. And there was this little creek I expected to just run through. Well she didn't want to get her feet wet. And didn't tell me she was jumping over it !
As usual, I'm prepared for anything at any given time.
You can't be off in la la land. Or your bound to get hurt. Shit happens..
a2zhandi 2 months ago
@a2zhandi I know exactly what you mean, but you can't always be prepared for what's coming, so you should really take precautions. Horses are dangerous animals, full stop. As soon as you're in the same room as one, you're in danger. I was stood in front of a bombproof little pony about a year ago and she just casually bit me for no reason. Most people would rather be safe than sorry, and don't want to end up in a coma because they didn't wear one more bit of basic equipment to save their life.

@GainingBananas fair enough. To each their own.
Thanks

In UK its perfectly normal and allowed, after all, horses used the roads before any cars or lorries!! I think you legally have to wear a hat if you're on the road here though, not sure about USA or anything.

Haha maybe in some states. I see his ears are forward. Try playing with the reigns with your fingers just to make sure his ears are not backward, but facing you. This will remind him that there is a rider on his back :) Our weight is snothing so sometimes they tend to...forget lol.

Ralfie27 7 months ago
Haha I questioned my rights to ride into town on horseback as well. I did it anyways and soon other horse riders were doing it too. I do NOT live in a small town but I couldn't believe it when they started putting hitching posts in front of grocery stores and buildings. Many fast food restaurants made covered areas to order food from horseback! it's not uncommon to see people riding back from a store with bags now!!! Wow!!!!
Ralfie27 7 months ago
It's not illegal in Poland as long as you are using a bridle ;-)

Eh, I rode down the footpath of a main rode in the middle of a neighbourhood? :P I don't see why they shouldn't be rode in a neighbourhood, as long as they are not a danger to anybody. :P
ItzKayley 9 months ago
@ItzKayley
RatongaBruiser 8 months ago
Lol, I have dreamed of doing this in my neighborhood.
