  • amazing to actually be apart of feeling what she is feeling. She sadly died 3 years before I was born. Was told by my mother that my dad used to listen to her and other jazz artist but since my father died so young at the age of 33 in 73 I believe he was listening to this while i was still in the womb. Thank you Pops

  • How does this only have 35,865 views? That's crazy thank you for uploading this.

  • genius!

  • I have not heard this song before. Thanks a bunch for posting this remarkable recording.

  • You know how those girls in the movies always see a crush of theirs, blush and fold their arms across their chest and say "he's so dreamy" or some other ridiculously corny thing? Yeah, that's the reaction I just had to this. :)

  • Her voice moves me sometimes to a happy place sometimes to a sad place either way I like the direction she takes me. I love you Billie!

  • CLASSIC BEAUTY, CLASSIC SONG!!!!

  • update....i now OWN this beautiful track as well as several others from this CD set. for those who are interested this CD can be purchased at amazon.com. just a caveat though, a lot of the songs on this 5 CD set are different versions of the same song(s) so i recommend this only for the totally die-hard lady day fans. you can however cherry-pick which titles you want and do a digital download. again thank you to mathewfallabel for bringing attention to this beautiful version of this song!

  • matthewfallabel, not taking a THING away from you, i just think the date lady recorded this song w/the percy faith orchestra might be a bit later than 1950, only b/c i'm listening to the tonal quality of her voice which got deeper androugher towards the very end of lady's life; i'd like to place this recording somewhere around 1955-1958, again i'm just basing this on the quality of lady's voice b/c by 1950 the effects of her hard living were just beginning to show in her singing voice.

  • @darchylde612 I agree. And it's not only her voice - the whole arrangement has 'mid/late 50's' written all over it, too.

  • just when i think i've heard everything musically from lady day, another masterpiece is unearthed. matthewfallabel, the proper words escape me to thank you properly for this most important find. i've only heard two versions of this wonderful song, the studio one and one she did around 1948-1949 live. this one just moves me to tears love it so. again from the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Simply divine this record, I admire other black American music, even as Brazil, do not waste the opportunity to listen whenever I can. Thanks!

  • This was very very beautiful! Ive only heard her decca version before this

  • Soulful.......Loved Lady. Way ahead of her time and those times are what killed her.

  • Absolutely stunning performance from the one and only - First Lady of Jazz!!!!

It gave me goosebums and chill down my spine - NO ONE can sing like Lady Day - she was truly "One of a kind". I have never heard this version before and it really got to me.....I am truly amazed that I haven´t heard this version. When was it recorded `58, or?

  • Thank you for posting, she still gives me goose bumps whenever I hear her live recordings. And for the tip on the 5 CD set.

  • Gorgeous tune. It's also on the very last recording (2001) by TV host Merv Griffin (once vocalist with Freddie Martin orchestra), the performance marred only by excessive synthesizer accompaniment. And it's included on the haunting Billie tribute album by Etta Jones ("Etta Jones Sings Lady Day"), which was released on the day of Etta's death, Oct. 16, 2001. (Please don't confuse Etta Jones with Etta James. The former's was the only "Don't Go to Strangers" that counted.)

  • I agree. This is from the late 50s.

  • I'm gonna find that 5-CD set! Thanks for posting this! I thought I'd heard everything she recorded!

  • This has to be 58 59

  • beautiful and original!

  • Hi, it's me again.

this was actually recorded in 1956!

It was surprise to me because her voice sounds in top notch shape here.

It was recorded on December 9, 1956...

The second out of four times she sings with strings in the 50's

The first time was in 1950 for her last recording session with Decca

  • @nigel1034 thanks nigel for the recording date on this song. so this session was done after her carnegie hall concert in november of that same year i see. i have her decca version from around 1945-6 and as much as i love that one, this version just blows me away. i'm searching for that 5 disc live recording cd!

  • The second was this recording

The Third was with Lady In Satin

and last with her last album...

Once again thank you for this extravagent video...

It also has a newspaper article about this performance...

I'm going to make a video about it so you can see it...

    Once again, thank you(:

    -Nigel

  • THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR POSTING!

I have never heard this version before!

Where did you find this masterpiece?!

  • Thanks! I love this version too!

I found it on her "Rare Live Recordings: 1934-1959" 5-CD set, which I strongly recommend purchasing if you like this song!

  • Brilliant! Thank you for uploading
