  • So beautiful.....love the animation

  • just. how.

  • Thanks for your awesome music, smalin! It reallly helped me studying :)

  • Subscribed.

  • One of Brahms' most beautiful slow movements? Yes, I agree, but Brahms wrote many most beautiful slow movements.

  • @svenson03 Such as? Would you mind naming a few? I'm going on a Brahms hunt of beautiful music

  • That´s really great recording. Also also great are the FAQ!

  • I want to die with this piece playing.

  • This slow movement really solace me. Thanks for the nice upload!

  • Playing this with two friends for a competition in February. I play the violin, and it's a lot harder than it sounds!

  • @xMissPurdyGirlx BTW, I'm working on a video of the second movement of this right now; it should be available in a few days.

  • One of these days I'l be able to listen to this composition without breaking down in tears.

  • Wow, this really is so beautiful and moving! I love the visualization. Thank you for uploading this :)

  • Thank you so much for this!!!!! Really thank you.......

  • Is amazing!!!! Beatifull song, the mixture of sounds is surprising. Perfect

  • Haha, I started at Debussy's Arabesque #1 and got here. Thank you so much for spending time on putting those annotations! I'm very grateful for your kindness to share this music with us all; as a teenager, I don't know many other places to find classical music so I'm glad you have this channel here!

  • Perhaps the only word that would attemp to describe what I feel right now is TEARS. dear Stephen, I never thought I'd be able to enjoy my favorite piece of music in that very unique visual way and I thank you a thousand thanks for it.

  • thank you for the Q&A, that was very helpful.

  • you should play the ravel sonatine and make a video. it's so beautiful but there are many players who disrupt the line and play it too fast. i loved your tempo for the debussy arabesque

  • I LOVE the reverb on this piece

  • This is an old couple facing trying times, fading together, reminiscing over the live loved and smiling as best they can anyway as the bittersweet end comes, as it must for all of us. Parting from life is a sweet sorrow indeed, but is made better when someone holds your hand, and maybe that's all that matters at the very end.

  • without this kinda music i really wouldn't have a point in life i love classical music :)

  • I love the way on your previous video's, you had links saying 'If you liked this you should listen to..', which eventually brought me here. And on this video you have no links because nothing is more beautiful than this, and there is no point linking us to anything else because nothing else will ever compete. Well, not to me at least.

  • you, my good sir, are awesome. And so is your choice in music.

  • I was bumbling through a lot of YTube tunes when i ran across this good piece of music.......ahh so sweet to my soul.

    Thanks Smalin

  • I can't humming along..so good

  • @Smalin

Hey, after creating all these visualizations, do you once-over sheet music differently now and think of it in a way also showing how these midi patterns would look played? ..if that makes sense..

(or perhaps as a new music translation, since it's as cohesive, visually, as you care to make it to be understandable) Maybe your experience of traditional sight-reading and ear-playing eclipses the influence these most-excellent eye-candy/ear-nuggets have on training...

  • @pretzelhunt No, my sight-reading hasn't been influence by the animations; the influence goes the other way (see the history section on my website).

  • Who are the performers? Maybe it tells at the end, but I'm curious already! Beautiful performance.

  • This animations made me listen to classical music.

  • The world is a beautiful place

  • mind expanding... the piano in dyads of blues and greens; the strings in dyads of orange and red!! together they form complements...

  • the music i have for this movement isnt c minor, or b flat major as the piece is titled, im a bit confused

  • @elchucabagra This movement is in a different key than the piece as a whole.

  • Oh, that is something special. A really lovely performance.

  • Inspirational. Enough to make me curl up into a ball and cry

  • I "disliked" this video in accident. Forgive me.

  • @angelddaz If you "like" it, that should cancel the "dislike."

  • @smalin really?

  • @Jackpotur I've seen it do that; I don't know whether it always will.

  • I bet if there was such thing as a Music IQ Brahms would of gotten a 150! :)

  • Brahms was truly a genius,simply beautiful.

  • I think I will play the piano part on a grand piano and play the violin and viola parts separately on my Roland keyboard, then synch it up and put it on youtube. Wonder if anyone has done that...

  • Jesus, when the counterpoint came in at 1:38 I gasped for air

  • I want to cry.

  • @Healter912 Go for it.

  • 3:30-4:00 is my favorite partof this peice

  • Why no second movement?

  • JUST WHAT I NEEDED IN MY LIFE!!!

  • amazing, all i can say about pop music is what have we done?

  • @Triccitron No idea, but I can tell you what we haven't done. We haven't stopped listening to real music ^_^

  • Parts of this sound very Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts-ish. I love it! This piece is just plain beautiful.

  • o ^ o

This makes me think of days gone by.

  • Most inspiring!

  • whenever you use the the bars i think of fl studio

  • I play piano and guitar. Definitely keep playing guitar as well. The fret work will also strengthen the fingers of your left hand which will help your piano technique.

  • I was wondering.....what color is the viola?

  • Prečudovito! Prekrasno! Prelepo! And I couldn't agree more with @angelddaz

  • Whether it is played by my school quartet, at my wedding, or my funeral, I feel the absolute need to make this piece a part of my life somehow. I'd never have discovered Brahms were it not for this, Steve. Thank you.

  • I use this song to go to sleep just about every night , which I'm going to do now . Goodnight everyone!

  • SMALIN you're the best! Your videos have opened doors for me in how I listen to and approach classical music. My only regret is not finding your channel earlier.

  • @angelddaz Well, you're still young.

  • @smalin Hi, your videos have inspired me to do something that may be quite foolish. I want to play piano.

Why is it foolish? I'm 19 and I only have a basic grasp of some musical concepts, I can't afford a teacher so I have to teach myself everything and a semi decent digital piano costs a lot (for me). As far as I am aware most decent piano players have been playing from a very young age.

So... should I still go for it?

PS: I play guitar and so far it seems I'm a bit musically retarded.

  • @Ashitaka255 If you practice for 10,000 hours (and get a little bit of guidance; you don't need regular lessons, but most people need at least some sense of direction), you will get good. It's better to start younger, but if you commit to it, you can start at 19 and still reach a decent level.

  • @smalin Thank you. Do you think its too much to try to keep playing guitar after I get a piano?

That was the final question. I promise.

  • @Ashitaka255 No; as long as you put in the necessary time on the piano, working on the guitar in parallel will only help.

  • @smalin Well in my experience that, however in theory you are very much correct, in practical applications this usually ends up with the student ending up with to many tasks to focus on and simply put "get in over his/her head". Which would of course be a shame. So being realistic in how much you can learn per hour pre day per week and so on is a part students should consider. And don't be afraid to take one step back just to take two ahead later either! It works both ways ^_^.

  • I have played this over and over again about 20 times, great stuff!

  • *Is left breathless by the end of the piece* ;-;

  • it is sooooooooooooooooo cool!

  • Ahhh, this music is so soothing...

Now, just to lay down a-...

    zzzzzzzzzzzzz...

  • zomg how do u do the video its so cool howw u make the videos to the music and this song is so amazing!!!!!

  • makes me cry every time i hear it. every single time.

  • Thank you Smalin for introducing me to the great classical composers properly. Up until I found your channel I had heard of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven etc but never really bothered to find out what their music was like; but now I can't get enough.

  • Thank you

  • clair de lune and this one = tear jerker :D

but you must wait for the build to complete.

  • This is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever heard

  • @blueorbeyes You will listen to many, many pieces before you find anything more beautiful. I've cried in response to music a handful of times; one was when I first heard this (being performed live at John Adams' house); another was when I first sightread it (with string players). It's up there.

  • @smalin I listened to it like 45 times already. I can't get over the subtle passion and desire in the music. It draws me in, luring me to the deepest parts of my soul

  • @blueorbeyes Go listen to deftones - Hole is the earth.

  • @moiUnenlagia thank you for the suggestion, but that song is not even close to comparable to this one as far as feelings elicited

  • God exists.

  • @lucasbracher LOL

  • @lucasbracher no, genius exists.

  • I think i contributed about 750 views to the total 85,250 views by just watching it over and over and over and over. This song goes well with drawing. and tea.

  • guys.....you should read the FAQ haha. i pretty sure that the majority of smalin's videos he has to tell multiple people to in fact...read the FAQ. O' en smalin thank ya for keeping this music alive and i only hope that amazing art like this will live on through the generations and is not lost in all this rubbish that their is today

  • This way of making music visible pleases my intellect which was lacking in certain abilities regarding music's mysteries and yet it only enraptures me further...

  • Wundervolles Stück

  • Its amazing how many people dont read the FAQ...

    Anyway cool video :)

  • I wonder why they would have released this recording if the violinist played a wrong note?

  • @purpleshoes I licensed it from "Royalty Free Classical Music." I think they own the rights to out-takes by performers who can do better.

  • @purpleshoes Can you tell me where is the wrong note? :)

  • @Lokar92 I'm not familiar with the piece, but the info section said that there was a wrong note by the violinist at 5:26. I was just curious as to why a recording would be released with a mistake in it :)

  • It's beautiful...

    Makes me think of somebody...

  • I love how slowly the animation went by, it kind of added to the feel.

  • I have a request: Any of the Brahms violin sonatas please. I'd love to see the 2nd movement of the 2nd sonata or the 4th movement of the third.

  • @jazzepotato Please see the "Could you do..." item in the FAQ.

  • please, please, please tell me how you do this. it would mean the world to me

  • @elliottharbo See the FAQ.

  • Why am I crying?

  • it's breathtaking..

  • I tend to get stress related ailments and this helps me alot.

  • these 10 minutes are pure bliss

  • @DogSoop I didn't even realize it was 10 minutes long!

  • wow

  • Id love you to do Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 'Organ' I read you FAQ so it ok if you cant. Ive love watching these very much. It good to hear the classics after hearing the blige passed off as music these days.

  • It is possibly the best piece of music ever written

  • I love it..<3 it's really relaxing and beautiful..:)

  • when the yellow and orange blob thingys play together it sounds like opera voices which is extremely awesome a great song :) almost made me cry listening to the song :')

  • They are the Quartet of soloists of Camerata, St. Petersburg

  • could you do mozart's no. 21 symphony

  • @lilchopin1 See the "Could you do..." item in the FAQ.

  • listen closely to the part at 8:55. I cried when i heard those resolutions. Its like a unsure person finding his way. Dont knwo how to explain it.

  • Wonderful, both the music and the animation.

  • Cello is the instrument of the gods.

  • The little blobs seem almost organic, they way they shift over a little as they get played.

  • nice video

  • @marywinmusic I agree, perfect words to describe it...soul warming

  • @smalin

I don't care what this guy thinks....keep doing what you're doing...I love these videos and every day that I get on youtube and find another one is a good day

  • This video is awesome; for people with hard of hearing, it gives the idea of how the orchestra works out in playing their instruments. Thanks for your work, smalin!

  • :P i'm sorry. just passing through. i have no idea with what's written in the description box. but what's the exact title of this music?

  • Very beautiful, but I wish it were a little brighter. I like the use of all the different colors!

  • this is so beautiful and transfixing.

    Thank you!

  • what a beautiful music.... :) i feel like dancing... in the sky...!!

  • Excellent.

  • smalin this is fantastic for a person who plays by ear like i do

  • Lovely music, never heard of this piece before.

  • so beautiful..

  • So in love...... <3

  • absolutely stunning. I admire your work greatly sir

  • i get so transfixed by this. it is so great!

  • Excellent visualization. This was 3d! How did you go about selecting the colors for each instrument? What thought process is involved in the selection?

  • simply lovely..

  • Your FAQ sometimes can be funny. Oh well. I might as well subscribe.

  • I only went on this because you said except for the endin and is great

  • It's been a long time since I've heard something that made me cry...thank you for posting this.

  • Ive listened to alot of brahms some time ago but i never heard this, i dont think i have any words to say what this is like, its stunning. Favorited.

  • There's a universe in this song.

  • this video make you actually think of stuff that may bring you hapiines anger or sadness it experess it self in so many ways that people se it it is abosolutly amazing

  • You should do George Gershwin's Rhapsody in blue

  • @radarwindstorm i believe that's still protected by copyright

  • I love your channel. I swear it keeps me sane. Thank you for sharing such beauty within a world that sometimes seems to have none left.

  • I just realized how awesome it would be to see Schubert's Trout Quintet animated... damn...

  • @AEFic Find me a good recording of it that I can license ...

  • @smalin lol... ive been reading the questions u asnwered... and what u answered :)

ur answeres r relly smart... some of them cracked me up XD like the 1 right above, where this person calles u gus... lmmo

  • Thanks for sharing Gus :-} Soul warming is all I have to say.

  • @marywinmusic Who's Gus?

  • @smalin How can this question be answered in the space of one comment?

He's me, I guess is a good place to start.

  • @smalin I cannot stop watching this wonderful video. It is more than beautiful. Thank you.

  • @smalin she has a cold. she meant to say 'with us'.

  • @smalin i think he meant guys lol

  • Tears are forming in my eyes...

  • As a cellist, Brahms always manages to torture me with that tenor clef! It's a bass instrument, not a viola! :P sorry for the exclamation marks, but i was hoping that was a viola in the beginning ;_; rgh brahms and his hard songs that sound so beautiful...

  • May I make a suggestion?

    Czardas

I'll probably get a flood of no's right about.... Now.

  • keep with the bubles, they are much more sensible, and easy to see.

  • wow,speechless...5Stars

  • Amazing !!! :D

  • This is just amazing. I really admire the visualisations you've made. As a programmer and musician myself, I can see just how much work you've put into these. Can I use the program for my own videos?

  • @Bovineprogrammer You can use the MAMPlayer (freeware available on my website) however you like (but that isn't what I use; I have a special in-house version I use).

  • I really like the mix of bars with the bubbles for this particular piece. The bubble portion just makes the string instruments stand out that much more.

  • Great work man. Keep it up.

  • I love the way you decided to do strings- it makes so much sense, with the circles instead of the traditional bars.

  • Please take out the bubbles, or at least do a version without them...

  • @evaengineer The original version (posted many months ago) uses just bars.

  • @evaengineer - I really like the use of the bubbles its very like cubase otherwise.

  • @evaengineer Is there any particular reason why you have a distaste for the bubble visuals? I found myself getting used to them and liking them once my mind was accustomed to adopting it into the experience.

  • Quel bonheur d'écouter cet andante ! Merveilleuse douceur !

    J'aime beaucoup l'animation :)

    ☆☆☆☆☆♥

  • Vision and sound of Paradise. 5*

  • I love this piece. I, too, cried during some of my first times hearing it, and really I don't cry much ever.

  • Love your work Stephen as always,

    May I suggest some Telemann?

  • @hankhonker There is some Telemann on my to-do list (though not on the one I've posted on my web site). It's just a matter of time.

  • mesmerizing.
