Haha, I started at Debussy's Arabesque #1 and got here. Thank you so much for spending time on putting those annotations! I'm very grateful for your kindness to share this music with us all; as a teenager, I don't know many other places to find classical music so I'm glad you have this channel here!
Perhaps the only word that would attemp to describe what I feel right now is TEARS. dear Stephen, I never thought I'd be able to enjoy my favorite piece of music in that very unique visual way and I thank you a thousand thanks for it.
you should play the ravel sonatine and make a video. it's so beautiful but there are many players who disrupt the line and play it too fast. i loved your tempo for the debussy arabesque
This is an old couple facing trying times, fading together, reminiscing over the live loved and smiling as best they can anyway as the bittersweet end comes, as it must for all of us. Parting from life is a sweet sorrow indeed, but is made better when someone holds your hand, and maybe that's all that matters at the very end.
I love the way on your previous video's, you had links saying 'If you liked this you should listen to..', which eventually brought me here. And on this video you have no links because nothing is more beautiful than this, and there is no point linking us to anything else because nothing else will ever compete. Well, not to me at least.
Hey, after creating all these visualizations, do you once-over sheet music differently now and think of it in a way also showing how these midi patterns would look played? ..if that makes sense..
(or perhaps as a new music translation, since it's as cohesive, visually, as you care to make it to be understandable) Maybe your experience of traditional sight-reading and ear-playing eclipses the influence these most-excellent eye-candy/ear-nuggets have on training...
I think I will play the piano part on a grand piano and play the violin and viola parts separately on my Roland keyboard, then synch it up and put it on youtube. Wonder if anyone has done that...
I play piano and guitar. Definitely keep playing guitar as well. The fret work will also strengthen the fingers of your left hand which will help your piano technique.
Whether it is played by my school quartet, at my wedding, or my funeral, I feel the absolute need to make this piece a part of my life somehow. I'd never have discovered Brahms were it not for this, Steve. Thank you.
SMALIN you're the best! Your videos have opened doors for me in how I listen to and approach classical music. My only regret is not finding your channel earlier.
@smalin Hi, your videos have inspired me to do something that may be quite foolish. I want to play piano.
Why is it foolish? I'm 19 and I only have a basic grasp of some musical concepts, I can't afford a teacher so I have to teach myself everything and a semi decent digital piano costs a lot (for me). As far as I am aware most decent piano players have been playing from a very young age.
So... should I still go for it?
PS: I play guitar and so far it seems I'm a bit musically retarded.
@Ashitaka255 If you practice for 10,000 hours (and get a little bit of guidance; you don't need regular lessons, but most people need at least some sense of direction), you will get good. It's better to start younger, but if you commit to it, you can start at 19 and still reach a decent level.
@smalin Well in my experience that, however in theory you are very much correct, in practical applications this usually ends up with the student ending up with to many tasks to focus on and simply put "get in over his/her head". Which would of course be a shame. So being realistic in how much you can learn per hour pre day per week and so on is a part students should consider. And don't be afraid to take one step back just to take two ahead later either! It works both ways ^_^.
Thank you Smalin for introducing me to the great classical composers properly. Up until I found your channel I had heard of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven etc but never really bothered to find out what their music was like; but now I can't get enough.
@blueorbeyes You will listen to many, many pieces before you find anything more beautiful. I've cried in response to music a handful of times; one was when I first heard this (being performed live at John Adams' house); another was when I first sightread it (with string players). It's up there.
@smalin I listened to it like 45 times already. I can't get over the subtle passion and desire in the music. It draws me in, luring me to the deepest parts of my soul
I think i contributed about 750 views to the total 85,250 views by just watching it over and over and over and over. This song goes well with drawing. and tea.
