  • we did this in high school, and we didn't have a vent hood, this is by far the worst smelling thing ever....

  • Boner.

  • I am assuming this can help us in life if there is a lack of water or a lack of coal for burning wood.

  • it looks like a giant steamy poop...lol

  • We're going to do this in class tomorrow :) Looks cool :D

  • @IcaLovesMusic WEH ICA. xD

  • We did this in class today. ..... It failed. xDDD

  • What is chemical .... to make carbon reaction.....i mean

    carbon + XY = XCarbon + y

    other than Oxygen...

  • As you can see here folks, this is one of few reactions that produces a big, black dick

  • at first, it smells like molasses, then it smells like shit! and the smell worsens

  • who ever says that this looks like a penis, has a weird looking penis

  • This looks like the Smoke Monster!! :o)P

  • What is the concentration of the sulfuric acid? Or does it not matter?

  • Did you do this at the university of memphis? Who ever did you teacher is kristy

  • So... you dehydrate the sugar right? Instead of using burning acid couldn't you just NOT POUR WATER OVER THE SUGAR?

  • this reaction smells like raisins.

  • my chemistry teacher did this on the first day of school. thank god it was in a fume hood. it shot out at one of my friends and she freaked out.

  • This smells terrible. I remember when my 6th grade teacher did this back in the day. It was revolting.

  • Comment removed

  • @soccer23m Reactants may contain impurities or the reaction did not undergo completion. I think.

  • Lol, thats kul =P

  • Does anybody knows what kind of gases are released from it?

  • @UAEX110 sulfer gas, and hydrogen

  • @emberenchant Yes thanks, i have already figured it out.

  • a black man is horny i see.

  • It reminds me of one of those little snake fireworks.

  • I really don't think it's a catalyst because that does not happen to sugar over any period of time

  • So sulfuric acid simply acts as a catalyst for the dehydration reaction.

  • That stuff smells absolutely awful.

  • It looks like H2SO4 actually catalyses the decomposition of the sugar.

  • i've done this experiment in skool its actually smelled just like dried grapes ( forgot the name)

  • @karenbee1996 prunes

  • Very cool.

  • thats awesome i wanna try

  • looks delicious

  • awesome

  • nice way to get pure carbon.

  • @gamotonfasismo

add that to many many MANY years and a LOT of pressure....and you get a diamond!

  • cool. you can make a lot of money in only 1.000.000 years.

  • lol!

  • whoa that's sick...and awesome!!!!

  • ummm wow? really? that is extremely offensive to the queer community. by the way, "faggot" actually means "A bundle of twigs, sticks, or branches bound together." Try saying what you mean and not hiding behind your homophobic lexicon. For example I would question your intelligence for making such an offensive statement in response to anything.

  • LOL youre a funny guy

question my intellegence? please fuken google the word faggot

    youll be surprised, fuken retard

  • What exactly would I achieve by doing such a thing? Because, if you are referring to how the word faggot is used in modern slang, I'm well aware of that and if you read through the rest of my last post you wouldn't have even been asking that of me. Or perhaps you plainly don't understand anything after the first sentence. Also, it seems that you resort to more primitive language and blowing off the truth of the matter, when you are unable to produce an intelligent retort.

  • @lnternet

I just lost all my faith in the internet, i knew it was full of crap but this is just too much...

  • Hey Redo12164, you fucking retard, queer means happy. Don't attack someone because the word they used had a different definition 800 years ago, when you yourself use a word that doesn't actually mean gay. And tell me how homophobia is linked to the word faggot... when someone says faggot, how the fuck are they afraid of gay people? Dumbshit - learn how to not contradict yourself.

  • that looked like a....never mind.

  • just like your girlfriends orgasm

  • ya but not your moms, they are real

  • that smoke smells bad. its weird, we did this demo in chemistry yesterday

  • *Sigh* everything looks like a penis to retards

  • @Scrod99 mmmmmm penis :3

  • @Scrod99 Oh shit my penis looks like a penis...should I get an IQ test? I seriously thought I was normal...Damnit

  • @Scrod99 Actually looks more like a weird cobra to me.

  • you'd have to be retarded to think that looked like a penis.

  • a black penis made of molten sugar perhaps?

  • @asdfhuk If their penises are dehydrated like that, I suppose it's true :D

  • @asdfhuk i'd be medically worried about there own penis if they think that's what a penis looks like

  • hey, if that pillar is just pure carbon wouldnt that be like really good charcoal?

  • and a good snack to get sober fast!!!!!!!!!! but yeah i would imagine its pure carbon right there

  • well the sulfuric acid would still be in the carbon, so its not entirely pure. it prob wouldnt be a good idea to touch it, because you need concentrated h2SO4 to get this to work....

  • it's taking a backwards dump

  • Coal is being produced here - did it in school as well

  • thats not coal you idiot....

coal takes millions of years to form, from trees that have fallen down, then been compressed and heated from the earth..

  • You sound like a little kid reciting a piece from a textbook.

  • i just did that in my chemisty class

it scared me when it started steeming

  • smells like crap tho lol

  • anyone know a reliable site where i can find out the safety precautions of this reaction? im trying get my teacher to let me do this demo for a speech im doing on sulfuric acid.

  • I would treat it the same as anything that uses acid. It gets hot so watch out for that too. Other than the H2SO4 all you have is sugar, carbon and steam.

  • yeah

  • I was told that some Sulfur dioxide is produced in this reaction

  • @nuclearrabbit and maybe to wear gloves cus you're using conc sulphuric acid :L

  • @djmland we did this experiment and our teacher INSISTED that we do it in her classroom [airconditioned, aka. closed room!]. my advice, don't do it! the fumes are very strong. we used a sulfuric acid that is concentrated [i don't know the %] but it's almost like oil, so the result is very fast. as soon as you pour it, it blackens and rises up immediately [even if some of the acid is still not at the bottom].

  • @djmland wear safety goggles, labcoat, gloves, the general, and if you do this indoors do it in a ventalation hood because that steam is a toxic gas

  • My science teacher did that, it was fucking badass

  • how warm is the steam ... is it drysteam?

  • wouldn't put that on a grapefruit.:P

  • Everyone seem to have done this in school, me too. And it looks like a black sausage xD

  • we did this at school it smells horrible

  • yer right

  • I have done this at school, its pretty crazy...

  • that was pretty damn cool

  • omg i want 2 do that it looks like fun damn u oh&s for not letting highskools use concentrated acid (even 4 snr students ie yr12) :(

  • I made this in Chemistry class and got sick because I inhaled the white fumes! Not fun.

  • we did this in science class today, it was pretty neat

  • Is there a chemical only reaction which replaces the h202 (hydrogen peroxide) maybe that would reconvert the carbon back to sugar? Just curious

  • What insights could these reactions yield when contemplated within human's ? Meaning, blood type , ion channels, sweating vs panting, diabetes and why some people have black melanin while others have white or absence of, Does blood type B+ sugar antigen (insulin?)code for blood surface protiens a sulfer element in the ring intended for metabolization in B+ tissues? What if people are type O- how can they metabolize sugar if they're never placed onto or carried by the red blood cells?

  • sulfuric acid is available in most countries as a 'professional' drain cleaner. However the public can buy it. Go to a hardware store and ask for it. You don't want the sodium hydroxide based drain cleaner, but sulphuric acid. It's higher concentration than 90% sulphuric. In my area they sell 97%. However, this stuff is not very pure.

    I however, have bought 2 Liter Lab-reagent grade from a supplier (I'm a hobbyist).

  • Hey he/she didn't wear gloves! : O

  • good practical experiment

  • ive done that before with drain opener

  • so C12H22O11+H2SO4=Rising Turd of destruction

  • I don't understand... Sulphuric acid is H2SO4 and sugar is something like C11H22O11(or something like that). So, i understand that the steam is H20 (water) and the black turd is the dehydrated sugar. So what happens to the Sulphur i dont understand

  • leaves as sulphur dioxide

  • ahh..in vapour ok, thanks lukejones84. In our school we never do chemical experiments. I'd like to do this one at home. Problem is, sulphuric acid isn't easy to find lol.. any ideas where i can get it? Is it ok to get it out of batteries?

  • It's not easy to get, i'm a chemistry teacher, never seen this done before, so I actually tested it today with cane sugar and 1Molar H2SO4 and it didn't work, you must need icing sugar (think Americans call it powdered sugar) and conc H2SO4 (which you can only get from chemical suppliers)

  • Any chance there are any chemical suppliers in Portugal? Is that where you got yours from? You proobably live in the Uk thought, i guess

  • icing sugar is a mixture of corn starch, sugear and other things. you need pure refined white sugar. if it didn't work, you probably didnt wet the sugar enough.

  • This reaction will only occur noticeably with concentrated sulfuric acid (about 98%). The reason for the reaction is that the dissociation of sulfuric acid in water is highly exothermic. Sulfuric acid is actually more stable when dissociated because the dipole in the H2SO4 molecule is greater than the dipole of a H3O+ ion. Hence ionization is favoured.

Dilute acid is already more than 99% ionized, so adding sugar does not help the ionization reaction like it does with concentrated acid.

  • With concentrated acid, the energy released upon ionization with water is greater than the energy required to break apart the sugar molecule, so H2SO4 will 'drag away' water molecules from the sugar.

It shouldn't matter which type of sugar (sucrose, glucose, fructose) is used, as all will undergo dehydration reactions. However, the grain size of the sugar will effect the rate of reaction: fine icing sugar is comprised of smaller particles so has a larger surface area for the acid to react with.

  • Lol. It's a penis.

  • it smells bad we did that experiment in school and we left class early it smells so bad

  • A chemical turd!

  • hahahahaha

  • This is the best thing i've ever seen!

  • the molar they used must have been so piss weak if they where just breathing this in.. we did this today with 18 molar..

  • lmao. the comments are funny because it's true.

  • hahahahaha! so THATS how the necrons build monoliths!

  • so it makes a huge black dildo?

  • turd in a glass

  • so that's how my poop is formed

  • Makes a nice alternative to crapping in a paper bag and lighting on fire on your neighbor's doorstep.

  • and that can be used for... what?

  • I want to know too.

  • ....

  • poopy!

  • Now that is cool.
