This is the fifth time I am watching it in a row! I'm widow of US Marine, Purple Heart, Viet Nam. During our 18 years marriage he was Wind Beneath My Wings. He wandered off with injuries, and after many years went into VA hospital & then kicked out homeless. He wrote an autobiography about being White and homeless, but it was stolen. A second one was stolen. Before he took his life, he stopped to see me sing karaoke, and requested I sing this song. Miss Michael at Christmastime!

Three things become apparent as I'm watching this video: 1. Johnny Rivers was certainly easy on the eyes, back in the day; 2. His version of this song is actually better than the Four Tops' version; and 3. Reynolds Wrap makes a great dress fabric.

johnny has alot of great song it would have been great with out the dancer ...what the hell were were these girl trying to do him they are so not that good of dancer.
We have two teen girls. We show them clips like this, when back-up dancers & artists did their performances fully clothed so they learn human beings are not just body parts, but have personalities, hearts & souls as well. JOHNNY RIVERS is great. THANK YOU FOR POSTING. Peace & Love to ALL.
This version cuts out a verse from the record. "Some say it's a sign of weakness for a man to beg. Then weak I would rather be, if it means having you to keep, 'cause lately I've been losing sleep...
@Nefarioso They had to do that because Ed Sullivan had a time limit for his performers. I wished that he had played his Gibson guitar in this clip, but other than that, a great live performance by Johnny Rivers.
It's interesting and unusual that he has those back up dancers (go-go dancers?) and they are not wearing those awful boots. Besides that, yeah, it was a great time in music, back in those days....
Wow, you nailed it 100%, Zebred2001, Amen. What a shame this generation's "music" isn't even a shadow of great stuff like this - Johnny Rivers, B.J. Thomas, Betty Everett, Spector's "Wall of Sound" , Dusty Springfield, etc. That music made you feel good, not angry, made you want to sing along, not blame someone else for your problems. May this great music live forever. Many thanks for posting!
@SRB427 "That music made you feel good, not angry, made you want to sing along, not blame someone else for your problems." Let me return the compliment. You nailed it yourself!

SuperSweaterVest, how in the world did she get to be a part of this song of Johnny's? This is something that you will live forever let alone your sister!! Such good times and songs back then...cd
@cd272443 Hey there. My sister was the blonde on the floor to John's left. I was only in my late teens then but I will never forget it. I remember my time at Venice Beach and watching The Doors rehearse and Jim making fun of Ray's love making upstairs. Hilarious, had to be there. Jim imitated the sounds coming from Ray upstairs. Good times for sure.
I was there for this performance. My sister is one of go-go dancers. John was a classy guy but he sure went downhill in the 70's. I still consider John one of my good friends.
@SuperSweaterVest ..... Super, which one is your sister ? They are all gorgeous. I remember this like it was yesterday. Remember " Shindig "? 1966 was a great year... I was a a college sophmore.

Your right Zebred2001 its just not the same as it was when we had singers like Johnny Rivers and Otis Redding Ect. you could hear the hurt or joy in thier singing
Thanks to Ed Sullivan for putting so many musical acts on his television show. He was a real showman. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have all this great video now. I also appreciate the creativity of his scenic designer and use of color (when color TV was new in the mid 1960s). I got to be in the Ed Sullivan Theater in 2009 for a taping of the David Letterman Show. What a historic Broadway theater!
No question! But I would maintain that we are still playing those one or two hits whereas most of the hits of today aren't of the same calibre and won't make it to an oldies playlist. Someone recently commented on how they thought some American Idol contestant did a great job of "A Change Is Gonna Come" until he heard the Sam Cooke originaI. We're awash in second-rate covers. I actually remember most of the billboard hits of those years and constantly re-discover great tunes I had forgotten.
@Berengier817 Oldies stations in 20 years will still be playing classics from the late 1950's to at least the late 1980's having hopped over most of the world-weary, pseudo-sophisticated, over-produced lesser talents of the last thirty years. Any single year of the sixties or seventies had far more classics in the top ten (usually all of them !) than any of the past three decades!
@Zebred2001 Im not denying that they didn't give us a lot of great music. However, you have to stop & remember how many of these bands had 1 or 2 big hits & that was it. Faded into obscurity. We hear the music today, but we only hear 1 or 2 good songs by them & the rest are ignored.
Go look at the top 10 songs every year from 1960 to 1970 in terms of billboard chart toppers. See how many you recognize. Those you do recognize, listen to some of their other music. You'll be amazed how much sucks.
O TEMPO VAI PASSANDO, AS PESSOAS VÃO ENVELHECENDO E A SAUDADE VAI FICANDO. APREVEITEM A VIDA AO MÁXIMO POR QUE TEMPO IGUAL A ESSE NÃO VOLTARÁ MAIS E VIDA SÓ TEMOS UMA.
good new music will not be created until a real energy crisis where there is no electrical power and they are forced to make first-hand music. remember vocal harmonies? remember guitars without gadgets?
Eminem - Mockingbird. He tells us his story, without any fixing on his voice. But it's a different way to sing, I'm agree. But music is a way to make our feelings speaking throught our voice. And even if I don't like, in my opinion, some awful Rap tunes, that I flame all this musical style.
Why no more music like this? Because art is the reflection of life. Society had structure and restraint in those days. Nothing was a given. Artists had to prove they had something to even get a chance to get in the door. Now it's all vulgar self-indulgence and corporate factories churning out social pollution masquerading as art. Its because we as an indulgent society deserve what we get.
@Zebred2001 Today the music is either full of gutter language or content, or the singer or group are using their songs to preach to everybody else about the way they think things should be. You are right, the singers used to have prove they had talent. I heard Loretta Lynn say that when She was starting out, it wasn't easy to get on the Grand Ole Opry, but she said today it is a lot easier to get to sing on the Opry.
@gabbydeb Yes. For the most part celebrities are disfunctional flakes who are in no position to dictate to the rest of us their usually simplistic philosophic, social and political views. Types like Bono (and his ilk) come across (at least to me) as tiresomely self righteous. For the most part celebrities are appalling role models.
@Zebred2001 Um...no. The music industry back then sucked too. The problem is, we only remember the GOOD MUSIC. We don't remember that there were god awful bands back then. In 20 years people aren't going to be playing Backstreet Boys or NSync on the classic oldies station. We only remember the good bands because we still hear the music 30-40 years later. We don't remember the garbage from back then because we know it's garbage, so we won't force people to hear it.
@Berengier817 Um can't agree. If the music industry sucked back then too then how in God's name did it produce reams of classic anthems year after year and decade after decade until the quality sputtered to a trickle sometime in the 1990's. God awful bands then dissappeared overnight instead of being propped up and whoo whoo'ed to, by legions of undiscriminating morons and "alternative" radio stations ("alternative" here being the alternative to good music).
@Zebred2001 I believe you are correct in your view. What is truly sad is so many of the artists the "industry" has given up on still have huge fan bases, and continue to make decent livings playing just for their fans.
A cynical overstatement, but there's a thread of truth in it. I disagree it was the structure or restraint. I agree (and so would anyone) that commercialization and corporatization are big factors. It also has something to do with the disappearing middle class. When every family needs 2 jobs paying "decent" salaries just to own a home, who has time to be making art? I've got a double-shift at the office which may or may not be downsizing me next week. My song about it sucks.
@Zebred2001 in my opinion, people were brought up RIGHT in those days. Not to say people are not brought up right by today's standards, but it's just a completely different world we live in today than we did back in 1966.
@clev9980 One further point I would like to emphasize. Fuelled by the raw talent and ground-breaking originality of the musical acts of that era, the record industry has ever since built itself up into a worldwide institutional empire which has an ever-decreasing need for real talent to amuse the "tastes" of an increasingly undiscriminating public.
... damn i'm old, wow i remember this so well. what a time of my life, things were so much better and so much simple. so many memories, and most all of em i wouldn't change one iota......

Artists had to prove they had something to even get a chance to get in the door. Now it's all vulgar self-indulgence and corporate factories churning out social pollution masquerading as art. Its because we as a self-indulgent society absolutely deserve what we get.
Wow are those women dancing to a different song? They are off beat and moving way too fast. Good song though. Wouldve been fine without all the movement.
Looks like there was lots of acid floating around the studio that day- who's the choreographer? Timothy Leary? That's the worst dancing Ive ever seen.
@accurateled This is from 1967 and was some hot dancing for the times. This is better than 44 years ago and is still way better than the crap I see these days at the Duper Bowl half time shows, if you want to call them shows. I'd take these chicks any day, especially the one to Johnny's left on the first level up! Now that was a fox (as we called em then). Wonder what she looks like today! Thanks for posting this "video", great music from a great time!
I love this music, everly bros, gene pitney, buddy holly, and on n on. I enjoy classic rock also. But I grew up with this music, so it has special memories in my heart and soul.
He is handsome....I like men in suits.I'd rather have a bloke like that any day rather than the Blokes today they are more like women some even wear makeup,so I can't believe the row thats gone on.Love the song!

Zebred2001 9 months ago 2
@Zebred2001 Im not denying that they didn't give us a lot of great music. However, you have to stop & remember how many of these bands had 1 or 2 big hits & that was it. Faded into obscurity. We hear the music today, but we only hear 1 or 2 good songs by them & the rest are ignored.
Go look at the top 10 songs every year from 1960 to 1970 in terms of billboard chart toppers. See how many you recognize. Those you do recognize, listen to some of their other music. You'll be amazed how much sucks.

good new music will not be created until a real energy crisis where there is no electrical power and they are forced to make first-hand music. remember vocal harmonies? remember guitars without gadgets?

@Zebred2001 totally agree most stuff you hear today just sounds the same. I was born several decades to late for me to fit into today's music scene!
lazycoffeedrinker 10 months ago

Berengier817 9 months ago
@Berengier817 Um can't agree. If the music industry sucked back then too then how in God's name did it produce reams of classic anthems year after year and decade after decade until the quality sputtered to a trickle sometime in the 1990's. God awful bands then dissappeared overnight instead of being propped up and whoo whoo'ed to, by legions of undiscriminating morons and "alternative" radio stations ("alternative" here being the alternative to good music).
Zebred2001 9 months ago
@Zebred2001 I believe you are correct in your view. What is truly sad is so many of the artists the "industry" has given up on still have huge fan bases, and continue to make decent livings playing just for their fans.

@Zebred2001 - In the 60's until the late 70's it is the talent not the looks that counts, now it is the looks, never mind the talent

Username93611 7 months ago
@Zebred2001 in my opinion, people were brought up RIGHT in those days. Not to say people are not brought up right by today's standards, but it's just a completely different world we live in today than we did back in 1966.

@clev9980 One further point I would like to emphasize. Fuelled by the raw talent and ground-breaking originality of the musical acts of that era, the record industry has ever since built itself up into a worldwide institutional empire which has an ever-decreasing need for real talent to amuse the "tastes" of an increasingly undiscriminating public.
