  • There's only one SRV. No matter how much Mayer tries to sing and sound like him he'll never be at his level.

  • @LivinWorstNightmare Agreed, but i think John isn't trying to do that. Can't he simply like SRV?

  • perche dici quello? non sai niente di musica, e si sei un vero musico dovrei rispettare tutti i cover nel suo modo.

  • fa cagare rispetto al Dio SRV....una stupida imitazione banale....

  • @chaliehall28 Anyone can play with virtuosity, but only geniuses write great songs. John Mayer has more hit singles than KWS is going to accomplish in his life. And John mayer isn't even halfway through his career.

  • Thanks to John Mayer, people now like guitar solos

  • I wish I could write a software program which would go onto the YOUTUBE database, and delete

EVERY stupid comment saying this guitarist is better than that guitarist. An apple is better than an orange to some people, and a Peach is better than an apple to others? Get it? Please for the love of God....stop.

  • Отлично! но SRV круче!

  • You guys are so silly... Mayer is a fan... Who wouldnt want this guys career.. The guy is like the Clapton of our time.. He plays what he wants when he wants.. I love the fact that he is skilled to write a good pop tune.. Doesnt act like he is a man of blues like KWS, but still will play it.. When these kids he is playing in front of hear this... Do they know who it is? no.. he is opening up peoples ears to the blues.. in his own way.. The guitar solo was dead from 1995-mid 2000s.

  • hes the man. my kids will know good music because of what influences he has and how he studies his craft and really respects it to learn every aspect.

  • wannabe.

  • Sounds like ur backtracking. He did what he did. If he was blues from the start we wouldnt be having this conversation. Let it be. His heart isnt blues.

  • @wmc1103 I would have to agree with this. He's a really great player, but he lacks the authenticity unfortunately.

  • @moopadoopolus why? you cant fake that much feeling ...

  • @ak231510 Oh, he doesnt have a pop background? My bad. (jackass). Whatever. Anyway, it sounds like you're saying he started w/ blues, SOLD OUT, now he wants back in. That will never happen. Ever. im not saying he's faking, just not true. and from what u just said, im right. He will never be accepted in the blues world. It's nothing personal, just the way it is. Jon and an acoustic guitar = greatness. But again, w/out his background, he's invisible in the blues world.

  • @wmc1103 He will never be accepted into the blues world? That is why clapton, bb, buddy, & beck all play with him. That is why he plays Claptons crossroads festival every year, that is why he plays at Buddy Guy's Legends, BLUES bar in Chicago. He stated in an interview that blues is a hard thing to be accepted into so he was honored when these legends accepted him into the club. He's done tracks with BB and Buddy on records, he is even listed on the blues section of the Ultimate-Guitar site

  • @ak231510 excactly. HE stated it. And like i said, they have more to gain than him at this point. Ever notice the best blues guitaritst alive DOESNT attend Clapton's crossroads festival? Because its filled w/ "mayers". Look, he is a GREAT musician, and a good guitarist. I look up to him. Dont make him something he isnt.

  • omg this is fuckin awesome!!!

  • Oh, jon. please take off your shirt and play "wonderland"!

  • john mayer isn't bad but, kenny wayne shepherd would blow him away

  • @chaliehall28 their both similar style guitarists. They share a lot of the same influences, but no one is going to blow Mayer away at guitar. Look up John Mayer, Slash, ZZ top, they did a show together and the general consensus there was Mayer was actually the best guitarist on stage that night. Same goes for Mayer and Clapton's crossroads performance. Defintely not saying he's better than clapton, but he's out-shined legends on stage before too. I would pay a lot of see a JM / KWS show though.

  • @ak231510 I saw Mayers and Eric Clapton's cross roads performance on youtube and it was obvious eric clapton was just keeping it simple he wasn't trying to compete. Thats the only reason his solo was "better." Im a big fan of both guitarists but you cant compare artists when one is trying harder

  • @chaliehall28 dude, not even. kws is such a steve ray clone it's unreal. seriously. he has the playing style and tone so down it's to a fault. john can not only play stevie songs excellently, he still does his own thing.

  • This guy is the best blues guitarist of our day. He's a Legend in the making and we're all really lucky to be able to say "we were there"....

  • @chaliehall28 Yawn!!!!

    TD

  • @dglass3090 Genuinely curious: why do you hate him?

  • If John can't play the blues, why has he shared a stage with the likes of Clapton, BB King, and Buddy Guy? Get your head out of your pretentious arse you dill holes.

  • even a talented man needs money

  • @SocialistsarePIGS You're really complaining about originality of a cover song? And this was not like Bold as Love, where he actually released the track, this is a song played at a concert in 2004, remember, Try! didnt even come out until 2005, this was before most people had any idea this guy could play blues guitar this well. Go listen to the cover of Califorina Dreamin he did on the Conan O'brien show, its on my page, that cover is pure originality.

  • @SocialistsarePIGS I bet you could have done it better?

  • no matter what people say, this guy is better than most of the biggest guitarists. he plays srv perfectly and in my opinion srv added to hendrixs's tunes. he plays little wing so smoothly, plus he can sing better than jimi. the only thing people don't like is that he has the looks of a pop star and not of a rock star. plus his voice is more adapted to the masses. its a shame cos most of you out there only know this guy cos of his image and not of is music.

  • @RichardStubbings you are right, and if you listen to this guy talk about music for 30 seconds you know just how much he gets it. He is not a wannabe trying to play the blues, he is a guy who has studied the greats and has incredible ability, which he has worked to earn. Whether someone likes his particular music or not is irrelevant. Everyone should be able to respect the guitar ability and musical knowledge this guy brings to the table, he is far from your average pop star.

  • @RichardStubbings Hendrix is still God... SRV is good but too smooth in my opinion. Hendrix was sloppy but it adds to the drama and dynamics of his wonderful compositions. He was the whole package... singer composer and exceptional guitarist. These guys are good but no way near Hendrix. Not even SRV. I don't mind the pop star look... he's what he is, himself.

  • @Dinscripter yeah usain bolt is fast, but a bit too lanky in my opinion. see how that statement doesn't make sense? i get what you mean, he has that rough edge, a bit like how many bands these days wanna make a vintage sounding feel and mix to their album. however i disagree buddy

  • @dglass3090 your a fucking loser, telling john to leave blues to others? you clearly don't know blues then you idiot it's not about that, sick of you couch potatoes just enjoy music and stop criticizing guys that will blow you out of the water

  • This guy eats, sleeps and breathes blues and so do i :) John Mayer for president!

  • Stevie Ray will always be my first love - but John Is catching up fast. I think the world is ready for a new great one. Blasphemey be damned - Mr. Mayer could be the new born King. Just close your eyes and listen...

  • @MrRootboyslim yes.... plese listen to joe bonamass if you havent already ... very close to stevies style check him out and lemme know what ya think

  • @georgeman21222 bonamassa's style is not really like stevies... its ,more like gary moore.

  • @crazysjim its all good

  • His guitar needs a new paint job.

  • @xsited1 is that a joke? or serious comment...

  • @xsited1

    no way

  • Im sorrry but pop artist or not John mayer has some chops.

  • is that guitar in the picture SRVs old beat up one he always played ? such a shame John strayed to the pop scene because being a good blues artist in that genre is a fading talent it seems.

  • @mixwell1983 nope its is own made guitar, inspired by stevies #1. cuz he loved how the breathing wood sounded, he wanted guitar with less paint on it..

  • @crazysjim - Ahh gotcha, thanks for the information..

  • Yeah, so he's good......damnit.

  • why cant ppl just accept that john mayer is an outstanding guitar player and musician. he's a clown but so are all the greats. best of this generation.

  • vaughan was the best!!

  • Comment removed

  • Mayer is nailing it - Not just saying he's covering it - its down deep inside him, where the blues comes from. Big difference

  • feels good to hear women screaming for a blues man, gives me hope =]

  • nobody - really nobody - nails down srv like john mayer does.

  • @peterstrohm kenny wayne is the bar, and has been for 15 years. not only r u late but also wrong.

  • @wmc1103 are you really discussing music? not only are you childish but also stupid.

  • @peterstrohm great comeback. a stupid person calling someone stupid. how original. im sorry the truth hurts.

  • I don't like mayer, but it's a cool preformance (just because he copied the original perfectly)

  • vaughan was vaughan!!!

  • @ksexton531 what would he do if he had to drop the SRV crutch? Mayer has no original blues style.

  • @vibroluxor mayer isnt just influenced by srv, i would say he does more hendrixy things than srv, those thumb-wraped bar chords with the pinkie ebellishments are more his blues sound. He rakes like srv, but he also has the big albert king bends and the close repeating riffs of a bb or buddy guy. He has a lot of blues influences, but when mayer is really good is when he takes those blues elements & mixs it together with his melodic stuff, which is where the quote unquote john mayer style would be

  • @ak231510 sorry, not feelin it. besides, I'm commenting on his "blues" work here. SRV was also heavily influenced by the 3 Kings and Guy a sumlin. If john wants to show his audience he's a "guitar slinger", cool, but IMO the world has seen enough SRV imitators.

  • @vibroluxor I know what you are saying, but I just dont think your giving him enough credit for the things he does well. He blues isnt straight-srv style blues, he is more like clapton where its blues and pop mixed. Look up Come Back to Bed, there is a video on youtube of him doing that song with buddy guy backing him up on conan. Or look up Covered in Rain, from his live "Any Given Thursday" show. If after seeing those you dont think he's got something than, you never will, but thats his blues

  • @ak231510 I actually like John's originals, I just don't care for a guy standing on Vaughan's shoulders at the level he's risen to. he's got his own voice and style, and he's super talented. It's like the SRV stuff is just to pander.

  • @vibroluxor And i would agree with u if some hotshot wanting to show off his guitar ability decided to look up some of the guitar greats he could cover, but jm in particular is probably one of the biggest srv fans on the planet. The man even has an SRV tattoo on his arm, so for him its not pandering to cover an srv song, stevie was the singular reason mayer picked up a guitar. If you look up villanova junction(which was his high school band) u can hear a texas flood cover he did when he was 16

  • @vibroluxor If it introduces SRV to people who may have never heard his tunes, then I say play on.

  • @bsimp07 - yea.. Id think more and more with new music SRVs music is a dying love but it's good that John is pumping it out there.. at least if some people like it they can find out the main source and blues will carry on..

  • @vibroluxor The man can rip and he has soul, which is hard to find in this rap/mainstream infested world

  • ''How do you feel about rap music?'' .. ''I don't mind it, there's room for everything, all kinds of music which means there's room for mine'' -SRV. All you people saying john needs to quit the pop shit, take a lesson.

  • @Amylouthomas yeah but you have to remember back when srv said that rap music actually had a social conscience, it really isnt even the same genre as the garbage they call rap music now, not sure he makes that same statement today. As for Jm pop stuff, he doesnt need to quit it, he makes good pop music, his pop stuff has more musicianship involved in it that anything else in the mainstream, its just the songs that arnt on the radio is his best work by far, we wish he'd focus on making those more

  • @ak231510 Oh absolutely man, there are some amazing blues tracks that are just being lost from this generation listening to new techno, dub step, stuff.. but vast amount of people enjoy it, so that's what srv meant he believe there's room for all aspects of music. and i agree, but i'm a blues fan through an through i just love it! It's sad to see blues at a low level but let's hope it picks it self up soon! .. Peace out!

  • this aint with THE trio, this is his trio with dela an JJ

  • @ksexton531 no, he doesnt. that would be some one being something theyre not.

  • @ksexton531 Amen to that brother. His pop shows just kill me to have to sit through, but I go hoping he will lay off the story time and BS.

  • @ksexton531 EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS.

  • Im just glad people like John are keepin the blues alive. Even if it is a cover.

  • sweaty john :)

  • If this guy was as good as he thought he would be SRV.

  • @joe1969812 - theres was only one SRV, - and i had the great opportunity to see him live 6 concerts before he passed, - as far as john mayer goes, - of course he's not stevie ray, or hendrix, but i think it's cool to see a young cat turning kids on to our stuff,

  • YOU CAN BUFF UP A SHIT BUT YOU CANT POLISH A TURD !!!im not knocking mayer.....im sure he is shit hot. but he is just another imitator.

  • @boomboxbadboy thank you.

  • I <3 Stevie Ray Vaughan

  • i love the blues more than any other music. but when people say mayer sucks because he plays pop is just dumb. there are more music out there than blues. should we go yell at hendrix for not playing strictly blues and changing rock n roll forever? no let them do what they want WITH THEIR LIVES. jesus you kids need to just sit back and listen. if you heard this on the radio or any mayer song and they removed the vocals must of you would be hard within seconds. "man what a good song whose this"

  • @voodooblueskid Im afraid for music to evolve again...Its going in the opposite directions of my interests...Thats why i hate pop...mayer does not suck at all.....but i can understand why people would be upset...Hes a blues mastermind who is just kinda an average pop-celebrity...my personal opinion is that if he was converting some of those pop fans over to blues and rock fans then all of his music is awesome...

  • @blazehand187 Yeah, i hate the mainstream evolvtion too, its just a matter of time before we see a lot of rock/rap collaborations, which makes me sick. You should qualify your statement though, because pop is a very general word, I hate pop too, but I am taking about the lady gagas and black eyed peas of the world, Mayer's mainstream stuff is far from average pop-celebrity, no pop music is a complex as neon, but you are right about his blues music, I wish he would focuse on it much more.

  • @ak231510 Well put. you sound like a smart person. I didnt mean average in talent. I meant he is seen as "just another musician" in the world of pop...When actually John Mayer is one of the only pop musicians that actually has any REAL musical talent (IMO). It feels like for every ten of musical heroes who die they are replaced by one who makes music good enough to be compared...If you ask me the talent pool is thinning and were left with thousands of so called musicians who sing the same songs

  • John has given a lot of the blues back to a younger generation but it's more important to look at what the blues has given him. His exact licks can be found in the records of Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Nothing wrong with that, but don't take Mayer at face value. Use him to discover the music of the past as he used SRV to discover Jimi and guys like Clapton used Elmore James and company to discover the founders like Robert Johnson.

  • his whole thing reminds me of the new eric clapton you know? even his shit with women and albums lol

  • No i think Joe Bonnamassa has giving the most credit to the BLUES, fuck this sell out fagget, he cant even touch Bonnamassa's skills, and never will, lol hes to busy paying pop, or i call it poop, lol you look at SRV (rip) even when he got popular he kept real and played the blues or rewrite a song to blues, but what iam i talking, he has never been a real blues guy anyway, but LONG BLUES and i will go back to the SRV version, i just seen this weak cover on the side bar..

  • @jinma2 Are you kidding me? All the greats dabble in other areas. Clapton played pop, SRV played rock and jazz, Hendrix played whatever the hell he wanted to. They're musicians, there's no rule that they can only play one style or else they're a sell out. If anything it goes to show what a great talent these guys are that they're able to adjust and adapt their style to different genres of music.

  • @jinma2 i bet joe bonnamassa doesnt have shit on rusty cooley. the blues fails in comparison to the metal.

  • I wish he would stop with the pop shit and go back to the blues :(

  • This was fair at best...

  • Wow I'm really impressed great tone and feel best SRV influenced Player I've heard yet!!!

  • holy shit! haha i was listenin to this and when he kicked up the intensity of the solo i forgot john was playin and not Stevie. he's gonna be one of the greats :)

  • haha i like his "number one" i presume the black 1962 looks nice, kinda reminds me of someone haha

  • 22 dislikes. Are you kidding me. You all are listening to a Hall of Famer. The versitility JM is f....ng sick. Listen and enjoy, because none of us are on yhis planet very long. Peace Out.

  • Why over analyze? Just listen to it and enjoy.............dang!

  • Is YOUTUBE for videos or slideshows????

  • @julzpg3 or in this case just the music?

  • I love mayer and his music, my only gripe with him is that he has no edge. He always striked me as a square. Even when he tries to be edgy its like he is even more square because, its like a geek trying to be cool. In other words great songwriter, but at times can be very dull and to traditional as far as it comes to music.

  • whatever anyone says, its a blessing to have great guys out there such as john mayer, jonny lang, kenny wayne shepherd and joe bonamassa keeping blues music alive, least of all keeping guitar music alive, instead of swamping us with more wishy-washy chart music synthesized pop.

  • No sense in arguing whose better than who - its subjective. So let's just shut up and listen yall

  • Okay I have no idea what the general discussion is going on about this video but I've got to say this: John Mayer is a hell of a guitarist. You might hate his pop-iness or you might think he' not as good as the legends, but you cannot deny his talent. I think someone said this, but he really merges pop and blues in a way that younger generations can accept but by playing stuff like this it really shows that HE was brought up on the real deal blues. Appreciate his respect to the orginators!!

  • great cover, he is absolutely amazing!

  • John Mayer is a great bluesguitarist, feel, tone and everything. <--- period.

And I listen to all blues, and saying ahhh Mayer can't play RJ or Lightning Hopkins, ofc not, he can't play SRV either. And neither of those could've played Mayer (maybe SRV;). But mayer can play mayer and he does awesome covers of other blues peoples songs. Why you think he's playing with the likes of buddy guy, please blues purists! GO TO HELL!

  • for all th blues rock lovers check out philip sayce .eric gales and lance lopez

  • well damn. He isn't half as bad as I thought. But no one will ever beat SRV!!!

  • @Doombot2point0 uummm... hendrix? dumbass..

  • Comment removed

  • If this is the best he can do with SRV then he should skip it. It's almost like an elevator version - SRV could tear it up!

  • it just dont got the SRV flow to it. he's tryin to hard. Stevie just let his fingers go.

  • This sounds like its played right but it just doesnt sound like SRV well always miss you bud

  • Hey guys, everyone has an opinion ok? Some think mayer's shit, some think he's one of the best things that happened to music, or others just think he's just so damn good. Let's just enjoy the music since it's all about expression and freedom.

  • Wick2107, you're missing the point. If you think the 'blues guitarists of old' could hold a candle to guitar players of today your head must be in a very strange place indeed. Why should modern bluesmen copy the originators? The blues is about expressing yourself, and your own emotions. Mayer has his own angels and demons to deal with. Why should he continuously tip his hat? Didn't BB King play with U2 or SRV with Bowie? Tell me Life on mars isn't a blues tune. Is it not emotive? Why categorize?

  • john meyer has a strong jazz influence in him

  • I think he's leave behind his poppy stuff from now on. he'll be doing it in a slow progressive way but will eventualy quit this 'selling records fachade' and start to really put his mark on the blues scene. he just wants his name next to SRV's or Clapton's so bad.

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan+ Mayer = Pure musical AWESOMENESS!

  • who really gives a shit whos better when they are all good?

  • it's pathetic how people bash JM, he's one of the best guitar players in this generation whether you want to admit it or not, and some of the best music out there when compared to other crap....so stop the hatin' and appreciate this music if you truly appreciate blues

  • Love it=) if anybody has time id appriciate them checking out the two vids i have on my channel

  • those who say john mayer suck are just jealous.

  • mayer is the best you tone deaf ignorant fucks

    john mayer is a god.

  • this is awesome and JM = amazing

...but for real, jack white's a hack.

  • if you dont like JM dont watch his fucking videos. just us who like him enjoy it. with out you faggots who argue over youtube. get a life

  • Nice playing and you can tell he's a Stevie fan. Too bad he's so full of shit when he opens his mouth. That's really he only thing I don't like about Mayer.

  • John IS the best to come along in the past fifteen years, if for nothing else, he uses his techniques as tools to move his solos and songs forward, not simply for wanking like Bonamassa does. Besides, for all of the haters who posted negative comments about John, how many of you can actually play at his level? Why not post a video and show us how good you are instead of s****ing on someone else?

  • @chadcy75 Nobody is saying he is bad. We are saying he is not the best. Sean Costello died in 08 at age 28 and he could sing AND play circles around Mayer. Bonamassa's songs are much deeper than Mayer dreams of, and Derek Trucks actually adds feel to the shit tons of technical skill that he has. Dan Auerbach is pure 100% feel and as far as blues goes, is far better than Mayer. Just because we are saying he is not the best does not mean we are saying he sucks.

  • I completely disagree with the exaggeration of your comments. U cant just name people & say they are better, Bonamassa's songs arnt deeper than JMs at all, lyrics is 1 thing mayer has over the rest of these guys in spades. Go listen to Stop This Train, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, In repair etc..& Trucks doesn't make great songs, he makes good music theres a difference, & I love black keys, but nothing they do is all that complicated, 2 say dan can play better than mayer is just not accurate.

  • @ak231510 i totally agree!!! no one can touch mayers lyrics!!! mayer can actually make you feel what he is playing!!! no one else can do that.. JM is the BEST guitar player and song writer of our time!!

  • @ak231510 That is so true. John has written some of the most beautiful lyrics you can find around today.. And i think John is the best, no matter what.

  • @wick2107 Horrible comment! Do you even listen to any of the people that you have listed. Sean costello was no doubt an amazing musician but I don't think in any way that he is better then John. Johns writing ability is much better and his skill on the guitar I would say is greater. John doesn't lay it all on the line in his songs but when you seem him in concert its a totally different story. He gets into jamming mode and theres no stopping him !

  • @JG129 Seriously, John Mayer's deepest song is Slow Dancing in a Burning Room IMO. Costello's Little Birds, Bonamassa's Asking Around for You, and the Black Keys have a ton of songs (Lengths, Things Ain't Like They Used To Be, Oceans & Streams, Lies, You're the One...the list goes on) that are deeper then Slow Dancing. And I have Battle Studies, Continuum, and WTLI. It is not like I don't listen to him. Mayer may have better guitar skills. He just is not as good at the blues.

  • @wick2107 slow dancing is just one of jm's deepest songs, try listening to In repair, Stop this train, comfortable, covered in rain, belief, another kind of green, dreaming with a broken heart, heart of life, another you, basically every song he writes expect for Who Says has very deep lyrics. Im a huge fans of all the artists you mentioned, but jm definitely has them all beat when it comes to lyric content.

  • @wick2107 black keys r gr8 but the songs r more fun rather than deep 10am automatic Next Girl i got mine, they r not deep. Costello is good but take dont pass me by, sing a line guitar fill sing a line guitar fill & the way he throws his voice around is a tad self endulgent &bonamassa isnt a great songwriter, like hendrix, 1st, his songs r excuses to play guitar, if it so happens the lyrics end up being good, that is a bonus, but not really the point of his music.

  • @ak231510 Ok maybe Bonamassa was a bad choice. But The Black Keys have fun songs but as their careers have gone on, they have made deeper and deeper songs and the entire Attack & Release album except for I Got Mine and Strange Times is deeper than anything Mayer comes up with. I love all those songs you mentioned, I just don't think its as deep as the Black Keys deep songs and Costello's songs. I also want Mayer to sing a song about something other than heartbreak. It is all he knows really.

  • @wick2107 Black Keys are unquestionably gr8, Rubber Factory is in my personal top 5 favorite albums of alltime, of course so is Where The Light Is. I think Black Keys & Mayer r both as good as it get when it comes to the music of today it doesn't have to only be one or the other. That being said, jm's lyrical content is unmatched in my mind. Lyrics dont get deeper than Stop This Train, "Dont want to see my parents go, one generations length away from fighting life out on my own."

  • @ak231510 I am not saying it is one or the other. I just think the Black Keys are better with lyrics. From The Lengths, "coals are hot to walk across without your shoes but in the end know that you got nothin to lose."

  • @wick2107 I don't mean to be a douche, but, Quiet, No Such Thing, Why Georgia, My Stupid Mouth, Neon, 83, Great Indoors, Not Myself, St. Patrick's Day, Clarity, Bigger Than My Body, Something's Missing, New Deep, Home Life, Wheel, Who Did You Think I Was, Try!, Waiting On The World To Change, Vultures, and Who Says are all songs that are not about heartbreak, more or less. And plus, heartbreak songs are what sell these days.

  • Comment removed

  • @cgentile1 Haha he needs to get in touch with Pablo Escobar to give him some musical inspiration.

  • The new Black Keys album is effin fantastic, I just wish I got to hear John Mayer be hungry. All his amazing solo stuff comes post Daughters and from a very comfortable place. Dude needs a bad drug habit.@wick2107

  • @wick2107 lol @ saying Dan Auerbach is a better guitar player than Mayer, wow.

  • @Aardvarked88 I said Auerbach is the better BLUES GUITARIST. As far as overall guitar goes, Mayer takes the crown. But as far as blues goes, I feel like Auerbach does a far better job playin the blues. This is all opinion anyways.

  • MrJsmoov123 should check out the White Stripes performing Let's Build A Home on Late Night With Conan O' Brien and THEN tell us all how un-original Jack White is! There isn't a slide player alive who even comes close to this performance. Not only does Jack White burn the house down with his technique, it's straight ahead playing, no b.s. excursions into abstract experimentation like Derek Trucks usually does.

  • John Mayer is as good as it gets, lol....That's hilarious............Good player yes, that's it..........SRV drives him in the ground......Stevies gone and we have the tool John Mayer.......sad, sad, sad

  • ya as much as I hate to say it, Mayer is one of the best of his generation of players. His poppy songs are shit, but hes a good player. I'd say he's second to Joe Bonemassa as far as blues goes this generation. And as many have said in the previous posts, blues players have been copying off of each other since Robert Johnson! All of the greats before Mayer did it. Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, the Kings. They all take established licks and put there own style to it.

  • No one will ever match SRV w/ a guitar in their hands, but John Mayer is one of the best if not the best of his generation.

  • There sure are a lot of Mayer haters out there, but honestly, shut up. He's as good as it gets, and honestly, he's a lot more versatile than most of the blues giants. They couldn't play acoustic like he can or write with the chordal complexity that he does when he's not playing blues. John's not trying to de-throne SRV, he just grew up idolizing the guy and so why not play his stuff? Why do you all insist on whining so much??? Enjoy the music, play it better if you can but stop the moaning!

  • @snlassen Actually blues is well known for its mastery of acoustic AND electric. And why would I care if blues musicians didn't have technical skill like Mayer. That is not what the blues are about. The blues are allllll about emotion. Buddy Guy learned by listening to people and imitating them, not by going to Berkeley. Berkeley can't teach you the blues. You either have them or you don't. And Mayer does not have them. Anyways, he should have made this song his own, not try to be SRV.

  • @wick2107 - Sure, blues obviously started out on acoustic instruments, we all know that. Thanks for the history lesson. And regarding technical skills, I hate it when people pit technical abilities against emotion in music as if a musician who has one can't have the other. The fact is that technical skills are tools which free a musician to express their emotion. Usually, the people who pass of players with technique are ones who've never taken the time to develop them themselves.

  • @snlassen Well once Mayer plays an acoustic song better than the acoustic guitarists of old, then I will say he plays acoustic better than the blues giants. He cannot come close to replicating anything by RJ or Lightnin Hopkins. And Derek Trucks is somebody who plays emotionally very well with alot of technical skill. I never said its one or the other. what I am saying is you can have all the technical skill in the world but it don't mean squat for the blues. The only thing that matters is feel.

  • @wick2107 obviously you have never heard his song neon(particularly the version he did on the live Where The Light Is DVD) one of the best acoustic songs and acoustic performances I've seen from anyone.

  • @ak231510 I have, obviously I think that Robert Johnson's and Lightnin Hopkins' songs are far superior to it.

  • @ak231510 if you want acoustic, listen to tommy emmanuel. especially the sons angelina, struttin and pegao. absolutely incredible work. dont get me wrong i agree with you that neon for the where the light is dvd was incredible. just puttin another great artists name out there :)

  • @wick2107 yea your a fucking idiot. his acoustic shit is fucking amazing.

  • @kweerb8 I never said he was bad acoustically. I like his acoustic stuff. But Lightnin Hopkins and Robert Johnson are both better.

  • @kweerb8 Eric Clapton spent his whole life trying to figure out Robert Johnson and he still hasn't figured him out. Lightnin Hopkins also manages to make very difficult things sound so simple. I dare you to try to play a song like either of those two did. I know people who play Neon by John Mayer. I don't know anyone who can play Ramblin On My Mind by Robert Johnson if they tried. And that is only one of his average songs.

  • @wick2107 I have never heard so much shit in my life!! John mayer is our generations blues man! He is keeping this music alive aswell as producing the most amazing acoustic music I have ever heard! I saw him live t Wembley on thursday and his mix of amotion and skill was staggering, so maybe go and listen before you judge! Who's with me?!

  • @ARHCP4EVA Dan Auerbach is our generations blues man. John Mayer is a pop-blues fusion. As far as pure blues goes, you should take a listen to the Black Keys. I mean come on. Battle Studies? Plus I never said he was bad. I like his music. He is still not as good as the bluesmen of the past. You try to learn 1 Robert Johnson song then show it to me. I don't think any of you understand just how difficult it is to do that.

  • @wick2107 Black Keys r still 2 underground for Dan to be this generations anything. I love BK, but if ur talking about following Hendrix, Paige, SRV, Clapton, Dan's name does not really fit with those guys on the renowned level. Again, BK are 1 of my favorite bands, but for the most part their songs r 1 riff & 1 barre chord melody, I dont think he is on the same musican level as Mayer or White.

  • @ak231510 I see what you are saying but the Black Keys are making their way...Brothers debuted at number 3 in the US. I don't think SRV ever made it top 10, his albums were always in the 20's. I just don't see Mayer as this generation's bluesman since he is not necessarily all blues like the other guys you named. John Mayer is very poppy. Sure he is giving the blues more attention but I don't think you can highlight him in the history of blues.

  • @wick2107 That has to be part of it though. No one has given the blues more notority in the past decade than Mayer has. He isnt all blues no, and Battle Studies is something I pass over. He said his next album will be a full riffy blues album, so hopefully we haven't even seen his best blues yet. But Where The Light Is was just perfect, singularly better than any other blues performer of the decade imo.

  • @ak231510 yeah i am hoping his next album truly is full blues. That would be awesome. I think he has a chance to become this generations bluesman, he needs to drop his pop side though. I mean the only people who really know his blues songs are musicians who listen to more than whats on the radio. The majority of the people really don't listen to his blues songs. He also does not have to large of a male fanbase. I think if he starts doing all blue and they become hits. then he will be the man.

  • @ak231510 the thing about mayer is , his albums have no blues , he plays the shit out of blues at his concerts and hes amazing , but his albums are straight pop , i wish he would put out blues albums cause he would be a savior for the whole genre .

  • @DestinStrahan The john mayer trio's Try!? Continuum has Another You which is definitely a blues song, as is gravity, slow dancing in a burning room, and i dont trust myself.

  • @ak231510 mayer, great..... but you really have check out joe bonamassa. he is the real deal amongst young blues players at this time...trust me.

  • @pedrinme Yeah, I'm already very familiar with Bonamassa, he's a good guitarist, he really isnt any better or worse than mayer in terms of guitar ability, but Mayer is miles ahead of him as a songwriter. Both great guitarist though.

  • @ak231510

You took the words right out of my mouth; except the Battle Studies part but that's because I enjoy it very much. But for those who still love JM without giving Battle Studies much are really true fans also because B.S. really is a testament to his song writing abilities; and anyone with half a brain knows that. Edge of Desire and All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye are awesome tracks and even though it isn't the Blues John we're all looking for we still know he's talented none-the-less.
