Last year we had 3 quakes here ( Christchurch, New Zealand ) and yes you can hear the quake coming if it is deep or far away. If it is right under you and shallow then NO you get no warning at all. we had a 7.2 40km away and it was wat this looked like this. the 6.4 right under us tore the city apart.

Ahhh I remember this earthquake. I was upstairs in my bedroom playing with my pet cockatiel and when things started shaking I was like 'WOOOO EARTHQUAKE!' But when it kept going after 15 seconds I started saying my prayers just in case it got any worse, ahaha. Thankfully it didn't though, the only 'damage' for us was a few books being knocked off the shelves upstairs. It was still crazy though, biggest I'd ever felt and all the car alarms in the neighborhood were going off.

@LeWolfgang Earthquakes ain't measured of the strength but how long they last for, I mean I was in the Christchurch Quake in New Zealand and I remember being in a 3.0 and it was violent because it was 3km deep, which means it was shallow and wasn't far from the surface

@MindFreakMe1 Not sure what scale you're using, but the NZ earthquake was 7.1 on the Richter scale. Earthquakes are measured by the amplitude of the shockwave caused by the plate moving - so essentially they're measured in strength. The time is irrelevant in measuring earthquakes, but of course a longer earthquake would cause more damage :)
