I mean, it's like the Die Hard films, the odds of all of those events unfolding the way they do, with such amazing success is almost non-existant in terms of how they would've realistically unfolded.

See, the main characters didn't exist. They belong to Tarantino and his imagination. And that's the magic of his films. They're not supposed to be realistic, but they're not supposed to be unrealistic either. They're like comic books. Would you debate whether a comic is realistic? No, of course not.

If it were in real life, they would've never been able to of broken into a nazi prison (to rescue stiglitz), Hitler and almost all the major accompanying officials killed in the movie would've been far too busy dealing with the war to of taken part in travelling down to the theater to watch a movie for "amusement," and if Hitler really WAS upset about the basterds in the movie, he would've sent the SS to hunt them down.

@bud389 By the way, I am the nephew of a WWII German Wehrmacht Infantrymen reenactor whom has multiple degrees. I felt like the portrayal of the Germans was fairly realistic. They weren't all bald-headed, greasy, cowardly brutes like the Germans in SPR. A lot of them were actually brunette--not just blonde. I mean, they actually felt like real people. Not the kind of people WE are used to, but certainly not the uncivilized "Nazis" people are making them out to be.

Also, absolutely love the way he thinks -obviously in general, and for example where where he talks about the choice of using already existing music, I can definitely feel and relate to that, and his view on the fantasy/realistic aspect of the story - that if his characters were 'real' historical figures then that's exactly how it all would've turned out! Haha, that's just how I choose to see it, as with most works of fiction/films, books, television etc.

I'm glad he addresses the realism at the end. A lot of people are saying the film, while good, is not realistic. I suspect most of them are talking simply about historical facts, because those aside, I thought there was a stunning authenticity to most of the film.
