I just don't get this bus stuff at all. Me, I try to give large vehicles as much leeway as possible, crawling up the inside of a bus with like half a meter of clearance is insane to me, can't understand these people.
In relation to number 4 - looking ahead, when i trained to be a bus driver, i got 'forward planning' drilled into me, partly for eco-driving (less brake use, wasteful acceleration/braking). It definetly helps, however i've seen a few car drivers do it, i.e approaching lights at slow speed on red and drivers behind becoming annoyed, i think more people should do it, i've been shown a BIG difference between car and bus driving in that respect.
I had a nice little "chat" with another rider by the Waitrose where the first guy RLJ'd once :-) I may have called him a rude name and he came back to have a word about it. Funny bit was he then did have to wait :-D I was also cringing at some of that filtering and the guy who cut in far to early is just plain rude. I always allow a good 2-3 bike lengths and shoulder check before swinging back in.
I often RLJ @ Clapham North. When there is no road on your left - and no traffic coming from the other side, well...it makes a lot of sense to me, it really helps with the next stretch of road. It's not legal in this country, but, it is, like, safer. Also when there are 8greenmen I push through if there are no pedestrians. Why not?
@redvee2002 of course, if you don't the govt get a third of your estate. but there is red light jumping and then there is red light jumping. if it's safe to go (8greenmen and no pedestrians - bike priority like a roundabout), or going left without traffic, or when there is no road on your left going forward) well - it's good to create distance from the pack of motors. BUT> @ rushhour on CS7 I do wait because everyone else does. I don't think I'm #special#.
How did you get on with asking for donated videos? I think that would be good to see, I don't see many cyclists in Bristol but when I see some silly ones I will forward them on!
@JeeRaph Where is the problem with the wind? the key is to just layer up, sometimes in the cold weather i wear 4 layers, 2 base layers, a jersey and a wind proof jacket. The jacket helps keep the brunt of the wind from affecting you, and the other layers trap the heat to keep you warm. And if you get too hot, you can take one off.
@JeeRaph Invest in a good windproof jacket. They aint much and will keep you nice and snug. You can also get windproof gloves which are great. Lots of peeps swear by Buffs, I just use a reflective skullcap.
Look for stuff thats a tigher cut as it wont flap in the breeze.
#3 Not saying they did it properly, but I don't think it is always neccisary to signal before moving out. If you look behind (properly) IMO that does count as a signal (and would to some degree under the highway code). Obviously, if you look behind and vehicles are coming then wait. On the duel carriageway bit on (shown on my ffwd video earlier) I rarely signal between lanes. I just look behind properly, work out the speed of the cars and swap between safely.........
@thomase1 ....generally look behind a good few times and for most people they work out that I'm going to go in the outside lane (or do something stupid and give me space ;) ) as the inside one blocks up (and most people can look ahead and see that I'll be able to filter thru the middle).
This isn't to say don't arm signal when passing people, just you don't always need to and it can be quite safe.

Excellent series, Gaz; love it. Might start doing my own. Cambridge is full of morons, both cycling and motorist-ing.

Is this london? I can't believe how many people cycle there. But I have a very low general opinion of most of them now. There are so many idiots.

@skidcheekvideos This is in London, around 500,000 journeys are made a day by bicycle in london

No2 Hats off to London bus drivers if this is what they have to put up with. How are cyclists not being killed every day when they act like this?

@specallez He has one very small light on his seat post. This will easily be lost in the lights of cars and other cyclists though.

i bloody hate the flashing lights on bikes, they should be made illegal .
and i can understand how they are not, since you can be pulled and nicked for having distracting lights on your car/motorbike

Have you ever gone over what you wear on the windy days? I wanna continue biking into the cold weather but the wind is hell.

pedroaguiaromundo 1 year ago
@pedroaguiaromundo I suppose they need to be really bright to stand out - there's loads of other lights that would just drown them out in the city.
