  • I've just followed these instructions to make the same repair on my HVR-Z1E. I'm importing footage as I type! Thanks so much. The part number is identical in the Z1 too. The replacement spare is so cheap I'm ordering one up incase it happens again. If you're in the UK the part can be delivered for under £16 including VAT from CVP.

  • @nickwaite do you have a link to the part? I can't find it on the CVP website.

  • I replaced the firewire connector and it still not working. The computer is not recognizing the camera. What could it the problem now?

  • I found the actual pdf service manual for the pro version of this FX1 camera (the Sony HVR-Z1U, Z1J, Z1P, Z1N, Z1E, or Z1C). YouTube doesnt seem to let me put links here so respond here if you want it and I can give you the link.

  • @photonstudios Hi, I have a HVR-Z1 that has just developed this problem. I'm hoping the Z1 and FX1 are pretty much the same. I'd love that service manual link if you still have it. Thanks, Nick

  • @nickwaite I emailed you at your youtube inbox.

  • @photonstudios

Thanks so much for the link. I managed to open the PDF on my iPad once , but it won't allow me to download it to my computer? Really appreciate you sending the link, not sure why it's stopeed wrking?

    Thanks,

    Nick

  • Many thanks for this video. I have the FX1 and cringe every time I connect the 1394/Firewire cable for fear of damaging the port. I have an older, less expensive Sony DV camcorder (TRV-11) and that Firewire connector has failed twice. I traced the problem to a "bad" cable that apparently grabs the little connectors and breaks them. So, use the highest quality cable you can find.

Now I need to find a similar video for how to repair my TRV-11, and hope I don't have to fix my FX1.

  • Thank you a thousand times for posting this video. I followed your detailed instructions and my camera now works perfectly.

  • very good, great job.. im repairman and you did it good... well.. i must to say that.. i like you keyboard..is microsoft? thanks...

  • i dont have this camera...the reason why i watched this is because my sister's fine ass friend is here in my room so i had to preted im doing something important! :)

  • where did you buy this part ? tks

  • can some body tell mi where i can get or bay that part firewire port some website thanks and how to ask for it

  • ahhhh i just replaced this and still nothing any thoughts?

  • Thanks for the video and info re repair of the FX1. I have 4 of them (plus a FX1000) with two of them having firewire connector problems. I bought one of the FX1's at half price because according to a SONY repair agent after they examined it, determined the FX1 required a whole new side board at $500 plus!

Even though I do have 9 other video cameras that I can use to connect to PC, it's just great to have cameras with full functions working.

    Thank you heaps.

  • WOW $40 bucks for a $2 dollar part ? Did you try getting the part directly from Sony or calling them, most of those 3rd party sites are a ripoff. They will sell you the parts I order parts from Sony all the time, they just don't have a website you can order from, but same like Canon.

  • you would probobly get sockd for it

  • I finally did the job with just the firewire port. The part from Mouser was close, but the 2l arger pins that hold it to the board did not match up. I folded them flat and epoxied it to the board. I added a little wire to wrap around from those grounds around to the bottom and soldered them for a solid ground to the board, and soldered the 4 connection points. More epoxy around the part. Modded the plastic too. I would recommend buying the 40$ part. Couldn't have done it without you Thnx!!

  • @Dblitz70 Update. The cheap fix of just the firewire port eventually failed. I ordered the full circuit board part with ribbon cable and installed without any problems. It's working perfectly. I'm just glad my adventure in soldering didn't do any permanent damage. Thanks again for finding the full factory replacement part and source.

  • @Dblitz70

You mean full circuit board for DV out port ? That must be my solution too. May I ask where did you order the part ? From Sony ? What is the name/code of the part ? I will appreciate your help.

About soldering the board, any suggestions from your experience for not to damage the unit ?

    Cheers

  • My FX1 firewire port doesn't work either. But, the port doesn't seems to be loose or shaky. Should I try changing the firewire port? Do you think the problem is much more serious?

    I greatly appreciate some advice.

    Thank you!

  • Sounds like it may not be the port itself. I would try some other things before taking the camera apart. You didn't say if it quit working or never worked. I had a problem with HDV mode and the software I was using. I would try another cable, another computer, update drivers, etc., do some troubleshooting first.

  • @reconrick1 Thanks for the reply!,

Well, I bought my camera on ebay while ago and the firewire port never worked although the seller said he used the firewire when he had the camera.(lie? I don't know). Someone else also told me that he had a same kind of a problem and he had to use a "Sony" Firewire for it to work. This maybe the case with me. I have tried couple of firewires but non of them were "Sony brand". I will try a new cable and see if it works. Thanks again ReconRick1.

  • i've had a spill on my HDR-FX1 and it seems to work fine except for the image being very dark, so iris' aren't opening in the lense. repair shop days i have to buy a whole new lense for 1500$. would there be a broken HDR-FX1 out there with a lense that works? is it worth hunting around or should i trust repair people and pay the 1500$? do you guys know where a stock of old camera's might be hiding? or if it's possible to get in the lense and clean the iris'? is my repair guy lazy?

  • Just got the part today. The part is actually just the Firewire port, which installed very easily except for a couple of screws that game me a little trouble on the handle (be careful not to force them or they'll strip). Everything working perfectly now - thanks for the video reconrick1! Awesome job!

  • Did come with the attached board and ribbon cable, no soldering required?

  • Wonderful video !

Just a question. My camera has a similar problem but not a loose connection nor scratching clicking sound. Only fails to connect to PC. The DV HDV leds are working. In this case I doubt if there is a burned board or anything else before trying to fix. I tested with 2 cables on Avid Liquid 7.1 on Win XP SP2, also Win7,Vista showed nothing.

Anyone had their problem still unsolved after trying this method ? Anyone who had a repaired DV out board repaired by Sony Service ? Cost ?

  • I had a problem with the camera in HDV mode with either XP or the software I was using, sorry don't remember now. I doubt your problem is the DV board itself if it's not the connector. On mine, before it failed altogether, you could jiggle the connector and the computer would "recognize" it. There are alot of variables in your case, did it ever work? tried another computer? updated drivers? etc. I would search online before I took mine apart. I've heard Sony repair starts at $500! ouch.

  • @reconrick1

Thanks for the answer. I tried them all. Now I need to know how to find a spare dv board and replace...

Currently I am using another Sony camera with minidv for the transfers. I found it on ebay for around 250 € hence it is also having a slight problem in the cassette mechanism, need to workout several attempts to successfully load a cassette. Sony in Germany, asks me to send the unit for inspection, estimate a maximal fee I can pay and bear a fix insp. fee. They decide then.

  • Don't order from Encompass (lousy CS). PartStore has it for a little more, but they have it in stock now.

  • Don't use Emcompass to order from (lousy CS). Try PartStore (dot) com. It doesn't have the (FP-964) number after it until after you place the order. Just add to cart the A-1073-874-A part number. It shows the FP-964 once the order has been placed - and they have it in stock too!

  • Just found it at Encompassparts for $28.11. Just too easy!!

  • Thanks a lot for finding this! I had searched and searched. I looked at the service manual, which is also nice to have, and the actual part number is A-1073-874-A FP-964 BOARD, COMPLETE, ref #615, the Y service company actually has a photo of it online. Googling it the part is from $35 to $45 at several places, I plan on getting one as my soldering skills suck. Thanks again.

  • I got the manual online at fixdevise(dot com)/smanuals/file/40943.html. See pdf (12) on page 104. Just need to figure out where to order it from now ;-)

  • I believe this part number is: Ref. #: 617 Part number: X-2023-312-1 Description: CABINET (DV) ASSY.

  • Hey great video! if only this was my camcorder! :{ .. i have another model and i was trying to search how to replace a similar component to wat your replacing.. the ilink 4-pin female port .,. i think thats wat it is.. does that part u replace come standard with all sony camcorders??.. i dont really know how to take my camcorder apart but i want to replace that piece because i broke the pins..if i looked at my manual .. will it have the part number and name?? Thank You.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I just have a question about the part that you used. on mouser.com the nearest match I could find was Part # 517-3E206-0100KV . The picture is generic so I was wondering if you could confirm this part number please? Thanks again.

  • Mouser part# 154-AVR20-E , 4 pin right angle, it is slightly larger than stock but works.

  • Where find this part??? in sony store?? or you have other site?? plz respod... i have my camara out of use for the same problem.

  • Read my description, it explains what I did. I have not been able to find the sony factory part number.

  • FYI that ground strap idea is excellent. However, i would use a water pipe instead of an AC outlet. Great video.

  • Tks, I have the same problem, and idont wanna pay 500 dlls to Sony. tks again..

  • Thx... very helpful vid.... saved me alot of bucks... my camcorder is now working like new....

  • good job, i would hate to have to take mine apart. lol
