These people claiming that this is "Royal Rumble" music must be young. This is the actual SummerSlam'88 opening. If the music was used for the Royal Rumble, the WWF obviously took it from here and then used it for the Rumble later on.
I remember one time after a match with the Mega Powers..Hogan and Savage were poseing in the ring and The camera man focused on Hogan and ignoring Savage.Untill Hogan pointed to Savage telling the Camera man to show Savage as well. Hogan looked ticked off at the Camera Man.
I love how that intro pretty much told the story of the Main Event without saying a word(though I admit I love Vince's old screaming at the top of his lungs intros lol)
Comparable? Are you smoking? Jim Ross is SHIT compared to Gorilla. You want a comparision, compare Moonsoon with Gordon Solie then we'll talk. But Ross is nothing but a fat piece of overrated shit that is only coming back because people like to hear him scream over the top of his lungs. Michael Cole has gotten more charisma in his little FINGER than that fat piece of crap.
@tonshaad1230 Wow, your eloquent rebuttal definitely has me backpeddling. I stand by what I said, regardless of what you think. It's my opinion and you don't have to like it.
@tonshaad1230 And as far as Michael Cole having any kind of charisma, Lord Alfred Hayes and Sean Mooney had a hell of a lot more charisma than Cole ever will. He's more irritating than Todd Pettengill ever was at his worst.
What are you talking about? He is and was way ahead of Ross.
Ross never wrestled. Gorilla (and Jessie too) would explain the match, the moves, what it felt like to be in there. In other words, he had full credibility, explained the whole deal and nobody (in front or behind the camera, not even Vince Jr) could make him look to be a 'fool'.
Ross just yelled alot and tried to come up with catchy sentences and was 'good' for a short run.
Boy, that opening and music was classic, especially the greatest lady of the WWF, Miss Elizabeth. I usually think that she would revive the pinup girl she would be. Miss Elizabeth is beautiful and vivacious. Sheesh, she was what, 25 during Summerslamm '88?
I will never forget this night. Monday August 29, 1988. They built this PPV from WrestleMania IV til SummerSlam. 5 months to build this main event. Hogan took time off to film No Holds Barred then comes back to save Savage to set up the tag match against Andre vs DiBiase. I was turning 10 a few months after this PPV and the opening match between the Rougeaus and the Bulldogs still stands out to be a great match. I miss 20 min time limit draws.
I was 10 at the time and stopped watching WWF a few months before this after watching it since 1984. What the hell was I thinking!!! I'm glad I started watching again the following year.
In 1993 when Heenan was either fired or decided to leave (don't know which was the case), Monsoon grabbed him and shoved him out the door of the building they were in and locked/threw him out in the street. I'm guessing Vince wanted him to do it, but he should have had the integrity to refuse doing it if Heenan was really his friend.
Actually, Vince went to Heenan and asked him how he would like to go out. Believe it or not, that was all Heenan's idea to get kicked out by Monsoon. I thought it was terrible but that was the way he wanted to go out.
Heenan wanted to be kicked out by monsoon because the two of them were actually friends. They both cried when it was over. They wanted it to be a type of poetic justice. After all of they year heenan insulte monsoon, finally monsoon gets the final insult by kicking heenan out of the WWE
I am aware of all of that, as I have closely followed wrestling for 20 years. My point in my comments was that I thought they could have done a lot better than this. It didn't come off all that great on TV.
I liked Monsoon but my favorite was always Jesse Ventura. I got mad at Monsoon for doing what he did to Bobby Heenan, though I know he was forced by Vince. I also like Alfred Hayes, Sean Mooney, Tony Schiavone, Mr. Perfect, Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Hillbilly Jim (he did many MSG shows), Bruce Pritchard (who did commentary before his Brother Love days), Heenan, Ernie Ladd, and several others. I thought Vince did a pretty good job broadcasting (loved that angle with him, Piper & Flair in '91).
In kayfabe, Monsoon threw Heenan out of the WWF at the end of one of the first Monday Night Raws ever. In reality, Heenan was leaving for WCW due to the much higher pay and the fact that he'd get to be around his daughter a lot more. Monsoon and Heenan were best friends in real life
