This isn't off roading. I drive on tracks like this with my subaru forester on the way to the shop for some milk. This is more like broke back mountain off roading.
I thought this video was in slow motion at first... When I take my Vitara off road ( the manly not gay LWB hard top ) I fly around the place, this guy hasn't learnt the limitations of it yet, certainly a lot of room for improvement.
what u want is a suzuki samurai .....the front diff in dese vitara is made of aluminium the get punctured very easily...samurai is a awesome jeep also for competition the samurai wud be my choice an epic allround jeep and very straight forward and easy to fix
Half-right. No idea where the "Kia engine" thing that other guy said came from, not heard that one before. Ones the age of the one in the vid used the orginal Rover K-series petrol, and the TD4 was actually an old Rover item as well. Now, the bigger petrol engines are Jaguar, smaller ones Ford, diesels are a part of a collaboration with Ford, Jaguar and Peugeot/Citroen.
@digitalportugal I have a freelander I, in petrol version, and the truth is that the freelanders with the petrol engine is not so good in 4x4 driving.. my opinion from MY trials.. :-) p.g. a lot of engine and clutch warm up, a lot of wheel spinning (cause is petrol engine and its more ''nervous'', and this is no much good in 4x4 driving) also low torque..) but....... the freelander with the Td4 engine (diesel), its much muuuuuuch better!! So if you planning to buy a freelander, go to the Td4!
This is not serious off roading neither cars of these could cope. Defender is a poor mans Range Rover, my 21 year old nephew bought a 2004 Td4 when he passed his test for £3200 it got stuck in 1.5 ft of snow the ground clearance is poor, the only redeeming factor is the Hill decent control but its not really needed in a car that cant go seriously off road.
I have an 05 freelander. Ive had to repair the manual sifter but other then that hardly no issues. Mine is set up for looks but I took it out in snow hills while most Jeep owners stayed home. Its a good lil SUV. Not a hardcore off-roader. But it will handle alot for its size.
Both of these "Cars" need to stay on the road....not that they were off roading anyways. Get a real 4x4. Buy a JEEP OllllllO Jeep just plain better than the rest!!!!
@lollllolJeeplife Jeep...what a joke! I have a Jeep which has done only 95,000km and it's spent more time with warranty related mechanical issues than being able to enjoy it as a 4x4. A damn Lemon.
my frelander is not diesel, it is a full-on super powerful and thirsty petrol engine, roars like lion, and whoever said landrover has a kia engine is complete wolly. most have honda or BMW engines, the unlucky ones have rover.

Guess those who have really weird comments never really driven one before... if you are comparing the Freelanders to the Hummer H1, Toyota Land Cruisers, etc, I have to say, yes, there are larger and better off roaders... but put the Freelander in the open, with the right tyres, it goes almost anywhere... not as fast as the larger brethren but nevertheless it will get there. One most important detail... you arrive in a Land Rover in comfort. That is one of the reasons why people loves LR.
Land rover is best. Had one of these freelanders a long time ago. Now I'v got a Disco 3 (best all rounder in the world) and a Defender as a toy (best off roader in the world)
@cleanmix the Freelander MK1 did not have a Kia engine at all. It used the Rover L-Series diesel and the Rover KV6 petrol engine that Rover also happened to sell to Kia for use in their Sedona some years ago. The new Freelander uses Ford units.
@Dockermark2 the motor was build by MG Rover and licensed to Kia motors, so technically its not a Kia motor. Kia is just using a Rover engine in a in a couple of there models.
The freelander in the Video is the TD4 model, it has the BMW M47 turbo diesel .... not a Kia engine at all.
The Freelander in this video is a stock model on road tyres the Vitara has MTs on and who know what other mods. That said the standard freelander managed everything that the had to be modified for.
@Dockermark2 kia own land rover you talk rubbish this video was made during the period they were owned by bmw/ford before they were sold along with jaguar to indian company tata

@4wdLimited that was a stupid thing to say these are softroaders the 80 series cruiser is up with the best of em like the defender and mercedes g wagen a freelander is basically a car with four wheeldrive not an offroader
My 3 door, diesel Freelander from 2000 (not the TD4) has the nice reliable Honda/Rover engine (a little weak) but is now over 200 000 Km with the original transmission! What really ruins the Freelander's transmission (meaning the IRD, viscous coupling and rear differential) are long road journeys at over 140 Km/h, no damage offroading. The only parts I've replaced were the right side window elevator, the left side electric window switch, the rear differential support, tires and headlights.
It is a very nice off road car but it often has a lot of issues specially around the transmission.
It is quite rare to bring it over a 100 000km . But m ine has 150 is till very fine. The secret is to not let it sit in a garage. This lady has to go, go go...
can someone tell me if freelander its economy? cause i want to buy a good suv but economy 2! petrol in cyprus its too fucking expencive that's why!! =P (btw sry about my english but its not so good )
Are those French number plates? I assume you have the diesel. Sadly in Texas we can only get the ones with gasoline. Performance is great but I'd rather have torque and economy. I love seeing a Freelander being put to use off road. Good job man!
Some of this comments are hilarious. Clearly unfounded and lacking true experience. I have an off road prepared vitara and also a defender. I have been to plenty of sites and greenlaning and only got stuck once in the vitara. They are excellent little off roaders for the money and can show other (widely accepted 'proper' 4x4s) a thing or two. Clueless springs to mind with the negative comments. Enter into the world of off roading and learn something!!!
2 absolutly rubbish off roaders! should stay infront of the salon where they belong! dont have a diff lock or a low range gearbox! and the axle articulation is pitifull. get a decent 4x4! not one to park outside a hairdresers and show off and then get stuck in a tiny puddle!
@omgbiskitlawl - your age on your profile is 14 so have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Remember the Freelander has the HDC system, how does that work if it doesn't have diff locks? It works via the ABS. And of course these vehicles are for a purpose, not necessarily full offroading. They are extremely capable though, chimp!
freelanders are the biggest piece of shite going with a chassis that always breaks in the same place and the petrol models use the k series engine what were they thinking, any newer than a 90 and landys are shite, the vitara is a beast anyone who knows anything about offroading knows the vitara is better and more reliable.
I'd agree. Lost count of the number of Freelander K series headgaskets we've had to replace, welded up popped spotwelds and cracks on the shell, replaced IRD's and the next to useless 'silicone filled toy' that passes for a centre diff. Having said that when they work they ain't bad - it's just that working Freelanders are a rarity. Oh, and don't get me started on the Hell-spawn that is the KV6....aarrgh!!
that is pure horse shit vitaras are not good off roaders for gods sake look at all the ground clearance it has and it uses auto free wheel hubs for 4x4 instead of proper diff locks (hair dressers car)
by the looks of this vid the freelander kicked arse as it was on road tires and the vitara was on ATs that just shows landrover make a 4x4 go further on road tires that it sells its veichles with
wtf are you all crazy? vitara beats the hell of a crap on that freelander.. that aint a true 4x4 like vitara you can put some mud terrain tires on freelander and slicks on vitara and he still kick ass
The 2-door Suzuki Vitara with canvas top is also a bit shorter and lighter than the 4-door Freelander. However, I'd choose the 4-door Suzuki Grand Vitara over either. The Grand Vitara has better 4x4 capabilities than the Freelander and more interior space than the Vitara.
Nice video and nice car (landrover). Fuck all this bastards with the top comments.

has any of u actually been off roadin in a suzuki or freelander

Some of this comments are hilarious. Clearly unfounded and lacking true experience. I have an off road prepared vitara and also a defender. I have been to plenty of sites and greenlaning and only got stuck once in the vitara. They are excellent little off roaders for the money and can show other (widely accepted 'proper' 4x4s) a thing or two. Clueless springs to mind with the negative comments. Enter into the world of off roading and learn something!!!

that was more of an on road course!

2 absolutly rubbish off roaders! should stay infront of the salon where they belong! dont have a diff lock or a low range gearbox! and the axle articulation is pitifull. get a decent 4x4! not one to park outside a hairdresers and show off and then get stuck in a tiny puddle!
omgbiskitlawl 2 years ago
You've never driven a Freelander offroad obviously. Mine could go to places my Defender could not.
nigelmtb 2 years ago
@omgbiskitlawl - your age on your profile is 14 so have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Remember the Freelander has the HDC system, how does that work if it doesn't have diff locks? It works via the ABS. And of course these vehicles are for a purpose, not necessarily full offroading. They are extremely capable though, chimp!

I could do half of that in my BMW 3 series. You should have made it a little more challenging.
richoverip 2 years ago
@richoverip - please post the video of you doing this in your BMW 3 series, it'll be a fucking laugh when it crashes out.

My uncle is a hunter and he's got a 96 Vitara 1.6 petrol.
Unless you don't sit in the car and don't drive in, you'll never know what it is capable of.
When we're bored we go to the forest with it and chase wild hogs :) We've crashed it a few times and had some roll-overs too, but it's still going :)

freelanders are the biggest piece of shite going with a chassis that always breaks in the same place and the petrol models use the k series engine what were they thinking, any newer than a 90 and landys are shite, the vitara is a beast anyone who knows anything about offroading knows the vitara is better and more reliable.
retrofordboy 2 years ago 2
I agree all bar "the vitara is a beast " 4trak is most reliable in my opinion
4tec4x4 2 years ago

I wanna see a video of a troop of little grey cats with party hats on, lip synching and dancing to this song.

by the looks of this vid the freelander kicked arse as it was on road tires and the vitara was on ATs that just shows landrover make a 4x4 go further on road tires that it sells its veichles with
spliffthedog 2 years ago
The LR Freelander has slicks on doesnt it :/
cottylfc1 2 years ago
wtf are you all crazy? vitara beats the hell of a crap on that freelander.. that aint a true 4x4 like vitara you can put some mud terrain tires on freelander and slicks on vitara and he still kick ass
l3runolvliguel 2 years ago
LOL?? you're crazy man!, No the hippo isn't a true 4wd, but its stock off road capability far exceeds the vitara.
It isn't all to do with the vehicle, it's the driver, swap the drivers, you'll find the hippo would go further

my old 1974 series 3 would make them both look silly
gurto1 2 years ago
I like em' both. Given the choice I'd have the Freelander though.
Cool vid, except the music sucks
4x4lew 2 years ago 2
umm the freelander was poorly built with limited off road capabilities

Put some good offroad tyres on the LR and it will go most places, the Vitara is ok but I always expect it to arrive in pink driven by Barbie!

Yes exactly - the Vitara has all terrains - a hell of a difference!!!
codprawn 2 years ago 13
@codprawn > '.. the Vitara has all terrains ..'
