The bass singer with the best resonance is Armond Morales...he has the tone of a true bass, not just someone scratching low notes with no tone and sounding like a baritone when they sing out.
Never mind what I asked below...Gold City does have a version of "I'll have a new life" coming on their newest album, I believe. And I think the version I'm looking for is from when Tim sang with the Dixie Echoes a long time ago.
Hey qwertyjuan...I'm looking for Gold City's version of "I'll have a new life" (it's in jowox's 5th bass video) but all my searches have come up empty...any chance you would know what album it's from or if they ever did any live versions? Thanks! :)
Yes-Sir! He is one of the best. Found another one of the best I had never heard of. Check out The Rangers Lonesome Road & Jericho Road if you like the true bass singers like Tim. Guess my top five in no certain order would be Tim, JD, George Younce, Charlie Gilmore & The Chief. I have been a fan of Southern Gospel for 40 years & had never heard the Bass Singer(Charlie Gilmore) with The Rangers but I really think you will enjoy the video. The Quartet is one of the best I never heard of.
I have stood shoulder to shoulder with Tim on stage and I can say with no reservation that he is one of the best ever! You just can't say that anyone is the best because we all have differing opinions. He is not only one of the Greatest bass singers but he is one fine Christian Man and I am proud to call him my Friend!!!
I've seen Tim a few times in concert and yes, he does sound that good live. One thing that stands out about Tim is the clarity of his voice. It doesn't get muddy when he gets low like a lot of basses, you can still understand his words. And in concert, his voice is blended and doesn't override the rest of the quartet, which means he's more concerned about getting the message out, not about "look how low I am". One of the best basses ever,
All this argument about who is the lowest and who is the best is childish. To quertyjuan, Tim is best. He is not diminishing the talent of the others. These guys are not singing for competition. They sometimes act like it as a comedy act on stage. They all love each other and admire the talent God gave them all. I have never in my life read so much gibberish as I hit that note and this note. All that does not make you sound like you know what you are talking about. Why not just enjoy the music
I actually had the privilege to hear JD Sumner live in concert and he was amazing. I have also been a fan of Gold City for quite some time. The two men posses/ed an amazing talent that not many can replicate. My hat goes off to both men.
All of the singers mentioned here are nothing short of great. But according to Guiness, JD Sumner was and is still the lowest. He was the pioneer of the outstanding gospel bass voices. He could blend or sing solo and go low with rich tone and body to his voice. For my money, his music was and still is the very best !
It's somewhat comical to me that today, in 2008 and soon to be 2009, if anybody wants to "gauge" a bass singer, the first thing they say is... "well he's nearly, or not quite, or sounds a lot like, reminds me a lot of" (add whatever phrase you want to here) but the end of it will inevitably be... "like Tim Riley". My point is that today (not 1958) every bass singer is gauged by the resemblance in some way, of his voice to Tim Riley... and your honor, I rest my case!
Nobody will take the place of the true legend JD Sumner. Tim Riley is a BEAST! And I love all the basses in the world with a passion, BUT, that said, Nobody will ever take the place of the true and only Bass Legend, JD Sumner.
Madapple - And Aaron's also got one of those "chair shaking" bass voices. Almost acary how young he is ( 25 ) & that he will probably get lower as he ages!!
Ok...Tim is amazing so is JD Sumner..but i think Tim can get just as low as JD but Tim is more clear at the bottom notes like Low C or anywhere down there..I just love to hear it
If you never saw Tim live, you really don't understand what a "chair-shaker" sounds like. His low notes would literally vibrate your chair. I grew up listening to Tim, both with The Southmen and Gold City ... Tim was and is in a class by himself. He was one of the first bass singers that sounded great singing lead.
Well I had the privilige to hear Tim, George, JD and The bass singer of the Blackwood Brothers ( who looks a little like JD ) live and with all respect to Tim, and the rest, JD was the only one whose resonance in the low notes could be felt on your clothes!. Now, I believe that PA systems can enhance the low resonance. And you now what, it boils down to who do you really like. Personally, listening to this site, I just dont appreciate it as much.
Wow Dad (Madapple) Good way to put it, I've only heard Tim based on what you showed and let me hear through speakers, But the technology of all these big bands bass boost make it incredibly earth shaking.
I've been listening to Riley for a month or so now and I really enjoy his voice. There are a few points in different clips where he sounds a little dry, but those are typically after longer phrases and is completely forgivable. I'm primarily a fan of acapella, choral and chant-work when it comes to basses but it's refreshing to find something attractive outside of any of those.
I have read the posts hear and in other videos about who is the lowest. What defines Tim Riley's career is the body of great work he has produced and what the songs he is singing are about. You can listen to him perform and he really sells what he is singing. This man has a ministry in music and I bet could care less what we think about low notes. Pavel, go back and listen to Gold City's music for what it is, and forget about what the notes are, everybody is missing the point.
There's no question that God gets the glory here...
Tim Riley is gifted with the God-given ability to sing bass and to sing it with strength and power.
The message of the songs bring hope and joy to hurting souls in need of a Savior-Jesus Christ. To those who are in Christ the songs remind us of that hope and encourages us to keep walking in faith.
Many on this vid are merely commenting about vocal ability. Is that somehow sinful? How can you discern our hearts and assume we miss the point?
You said it!. Southern Gospel Music, eventhough has a very nice sound and it's entertaining, the image that it portrays is that of who is the highest or lowest. Lyrics and how solemn a song is portrayed means more for it is Christ the reason and only Him should get the credit and glory!
Well, I'd be interested in knowing who Pavel thinks is the best ever? Not looking to argue because we all have different tastes in music but simply curious. Hopefully there will be some vids of his choice as I just like bass singing.
Vids to watch any= Russian basso profondo clips on youtube, they speak for themselves. It's a diffrent sound, Tim Riley is low enough, but methinks he is not very resonant. Favorites=wichniakov/pusikov/mihailik
Pavel, I would say that Tim Riley is the best at what he does, Southern Gospel and you can tell me who does the best at Basso Profundo, they are not the same kind of music. I sang bass in our concert choir in college and love acappella choral music. I have listened to most of the basso profundo's on youtube and really enjoy all male choral pieces. Other than the low note chant segments I could listen all day.
very good points, you speak fairly. I don't like southern gospel but I have to take it for what it is. some people love it, I can;t stand it and it hinders my view of these basses, to a certain extent, I just don't find them very good, but your right to each his own
I grew up as a kid in a southern US church and grew to love this style and what they were singing about. In college I was introduced to choral singing such as you like and learn to love it also. Got one up on you:) I like music that features the voice, that is why I hate pop/rock/rap and such. I see the fascination in knowing who is lower that pervades these posts but set me down in front of a great recording of either style and I will get lost in the music, not the notes.
nice nice, I'm sure if I had likewise grown up listening to southern gospel I would love it as well! I too love choral music, haha but a more limited spectrum I presume. your right again that pop/rap is absolute trash, but I don't think it's who is lower that matters so much, I think it should depend more on the sound produced on the low notes
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree!. Tim might have a very good range but no resonance! it sounds more like throat forcing to me. Big John Hall to me has a more appealing voice and has depth aswell as resonance.
yes he can definately sing low and loud low which is very rare! sorry I was just reacting because I don't feel he is the best bass singer ever...no offense
what one cannot deny is that he rips low notes..G1, F#1, and by listening to the resonance of it OVER AND OVER it is apparent that this man doesn't need to have a close mic for these notes to be clearly audible. You can tell if you have an ear for such things, which I know pavelkostov does.
this dude is cool and super good. im able to get the A on the bottem of the staff and im not sure but i think maybe low. just let me no if its good people. and dont leave one of those rude comments
This is nothing. With the mic close enough to your mouth, and the way they adjust and equalize their sounds it makes it sounds alot different than it would without all that help.
You should know better than that...I agree that there are many basses who basically "breathe" into the mic and they have a soundman adjust and equalize them in order for them to be audible...
If you can't hear that Tim Riley is an obvious exception, then something's wrong with your ear. It's easy to hear him "ripping" these notes...mic or no mic...I guarantee you Riley can be heard easily.
Someone in another video said that Tim Riley couldn't sing below a G1...uh...I think I just heard one of the easiest and one of the strongest Gb1 (F#1) at the beginning of this vid...I think the man could sing lower in his prime if he wanted to.
comparing JD Sumner to Tim Riley is like comparing... Beethoven and Chopin, you can't say which was better, they were both great. Having said that, for those of you who said JD sumner couldn't do what tim did, you're wrong. JD can hit every note Tim did, with the same strength and clarity. JD's weakness was wanting to go so much lower. He loved tryin to go as low as his voice would allow him to go. That's where he would get unclear and such. But undoubtedly they were both great Basses!!!!!
No one can argue with the fact that Tim Riley is the best bass out there. His voice is never weak or grumbly, it is always as solid as it is when he sings in his middle register. Unlike some basses (JD, Tim Storms [terrible]) his low notes resonate everything, and really give you the chills live. He is fantastic!
Tim Riley is by far the clearest, maybe not the lowest, bass singer of all time. The low notes that he's hit over the years were perfect for Gold City's style and sound. His voice is just crystal clear and deep, which gave Gold City their distinctive sound. He didn't have to grunt and growl any notes. He never fabricated a bass note. Concerts were just like the albums. Tim is the best in my book, and it's my opinion.
I found this info on the internet, can anyone find these recordings? "Squire Parsons recorded a song called "One Voice" and GC sang the backup vocals for it. Tim was busting a low F on that song. The thing about Tim Riley's voice is that it is so full. A lot of guys can growl double low Cs, but Tim Riley sings Gs and Fs. I'd rather hear a guy sing than growl any day of the week.
But I know on "Show Me the Cross" on the last chorus, he's just hitting some really, really notes."
I have "Show Me the Cross".... listen @ 6:37 of this video.
My friend's father has a TON of old Squire Parsons stuff though... not sure if he has that recording or not. Is that the song title, or the Album title??
what is the name of the song at the beginning with the great F#1 and the song at 6.20 with the G1 (...pray for me...)? I will feature these in my next bass video!
Great video, Tim Riley is without question, one of the greatest of our time. I put Tim and George younce in the same category.. Awesome. Thank for posting, please post more.
I LOVE these two vids of Tim. He is THE best. Clear and consistent.

JD's weakness was wanting to go so much lower. He loved tryin to go as low as his voice would allow him to go. That's where he would get unclear and such. But undoubtedly they were both great Basses!!!!!

JD Sumner can't hold hold Tim Riley's microphone. Tim is by far the best bass singer to ever live. The resonance he creates in unparalleled.

Is that the song title, or the Album title??

okay...this is crazy! Over and over and over he's singing Ab, G, and the 1st example had him singing a Gb1 and he NAILED it...lol...
I don't care what ANYONE says...he is the king of "rip factor"
randyjsing 3 years ago
Yes he is, and that's why I love his singing! :)
It's not breathy, hard to hear or low on volume... he simply 'RIP'S' those notes like nothing.

With all due respect you need to get off that crackpipe...
I love what JD Sumner did...but it's a waste of time to compare both of them because they are sooo different in terms of style...don't even go there.
