uhh your right in one respect people do use pinging to test connections but it is also used in a DoS (Denial of Service) which is an attack, by pinging a server continuously it will hopefully crash the server for a short period of time, hence the name "Denial of Service" as this attack is used to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. :)
