The Riff character is definitely the showier, and more fun, role in this movie. The main character, Tony, has only one dance scene at the high school and it's hardly a dynamic dancing part.

@kataisa3 I read in a book about the making of this movie that Elvis Presley was supposed to play Tony but a bigshot in the production didn't want him for it because he looked too dark and couldn't really dance. In the end, Richard Beymer was cast as Tony. He couldn't sing or dance at all so his voice was dubbed.

In the original Broadway script this song and cool were switched. For the motion picture the director felt this song was much better before the rumble and Cool fit better after. I agree, Cool is so much more emotional after the rumble where this is more lighthearted and funny.

Riff to me is West-side story. His character was so cool, but at the same time flawed. He will always be my favorite character. Sometimes I wished that his character was the one who fell in love with Marie, but still leaving Tony character there as a friend who is trying to get Riff to give up the gangsta life. Tony is definitely the voice of reason, but too boring of a character to have been made the lead as Maria's lover. Tony should have been the sidekick to Riff.
