The Hajj, for instance, which pre-dated Muhammad was a commemoration of the birth of Ishmael to Hagar and the miracles from God that saved them. They believed in Allah as the supreme God but believed in intermediary deities as well. Muhammad was just returning them to the religion of Abraham that they had deviated from.
